Blog Action Day: Human Rights

October 16, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Today is Blog Action Day, the topic being Human Rights.

All Horse Owners have the Right to Learn how to Better Care for Horses

Now no surprises here that I’ll take an equine view on this one (and fit in horse rights whilst I’m at it).  I believe horse lovers and owners have many rights that can positively affect their equine friends.  They have the right:

  • to continue to educate themselves about horse care, health and welfare
  • to enjoy riding happy and healthy horses
  • to generate a career with an animal that they love

Now depending on your personal situation, you may not believe you have the means or the right to do each of the above points.  I challenge you to look for opportunities to do so!

Education doesn’t always have to cost, there are often free courses or information or videos online that you can benefit from, books that you can borrow and knowledgeable people who you can ask questions of.

Horse riding may not be an option, but you may discover in equine circles friends who are able to offer you a chance to ride with them, or you may be able to save up for trail rides or lessons on an infrequent basis.

Now with regards to careers, there are horses in most countries of the world that need looking after.  I believe there are many opportunities for those who are keen and continually learning.  If you’re interested in learning about what you can expect from a horse career, perhaps you’d like to take a look at Horse Country – A World of Horses, which explores the lives of 4 women working as horse riding instructors and on a thoroughbred stud.

“Riders who force their horses by the use of the whip only increase their fear for they then associate the pain with the thing that frightens them.” – Xenophon
