The Partnered Pony by Jenifer Morrissey

December 31, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Jenifer Morrissey’s the Partnered Pony: What’s Possible, Practical and Powerful with Small Equines is an incredibly interesting read. As someone who’s been blessed by the ponies in her life, Jenifer shows how it is possible to partner with them in many ways. Perhaps this is by using them in your work or enjoying a ride with them. Jenifer shows that even by doing other day-to-day jobs, ponies can be included and utilised with a bit of creativity.

With a particular focus on working ponies, Jenifer divides this non fiction work into many short chapters that are each a story in themselves. She mainly details her own experiences working with her ponies.  Many of these are Fell ponies. In these experiences she explores the concept of partnering with a pony, and dealing with health issues such as hoof care and laminitis.  She also touches on colic as well as riding and working with the ponies.

Other chapters detail gems of advice she has learned from horse owners, trainers and other well known horse figures. As I read through many of the chapters, I found myself highlighting terms or names.  I would then go and do a search online. The result has been half a dozen or so ideas for posts in Equus Education! I love horse books that open your eyes to more possibilities with horses. The Partnered Pony has definitely done that for me.

For those who enjoy an educational read, I encourage you to get  the Partnered Pony: What’s Possible, Practical and Powerful with Small Equines.  It is a book that explores various possibilities whilst working with ponies (or horses!). The short chapters make it an easy read to do little by little, or in a bulk sitting.

Horse Book Interactive Site

December 30, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have recently come across FictFact whilst looking up an equine author. It looks like an interesting tool and my books are in the process of being added. Whilst browsing, once again I got to thinking… there are a few different sites that allow for your love of books to be interactive and public – Goodreads and LibraryThing come to mind. So why not a horse book interactive site?

It seems that FictFact provides details in particular on book series. In this way, you can keep up to date on new releases in series from authors. You can also make sure you’re reading the series in book order.

Great idea! I love that Goodreads allows you to track your progress as you read a book. Opportunities to read and review on Goodreads and Librarything are appealing, too.

FictFact makes their money through affiliate sales on Amazon as well as donations via PayPal. For the horse book enthusiast, I am sure a horse book interactive site could be set up and earn an income in time. Things to include could cover:

  • Ability to rate horse books
  • Chance to follow authors and book series
  • Links to be able to buy horse books
  • Chances to vote on best horse books and covers
  • Interviews with horse book authors

Really, what is included is down to the programming capabilities of the creator/s and their imagination!  This is a potential residual income earner, too.

A horse book interactive site I believe could become as popular as Goodreads with horse fans. And when it comes to horse authors, I am sure they would also love such a set up to promote their works.

Poudre Wilderness Volunteers

December 28, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I am learning about so many different pony related tasks in Jenifer Morrissey’s book, the Partnered Pony! The most recent reference that I just had to look up was to the Poudre Wilderness Horse Patrol. A search online lead me to the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers website.

Poudre Wilderness Volunteers - Would you mix your Love of Trail Riding with Volunteer Work?
Poudre Wilderness Volunteers – Would you mix your Love of Trail Riding with Volunteer Work?

If you’re trying to build up your resume – why not consider a volunteer position that affords you the chance to do something with horses, too?

This particular opportunity is for those who can get to an area in the Northern Colorado Wilderness. If you’re a fan of hiking (or horse riding!) the trails, then it is possible to become a Poudre Wilderness Volunteer. Potential members are recruited throughout the year, with the application process closing at the end of March. Mandatory training for new members is carried out in May. Many members actively patrol the trails, but volunteers are also sought in the areas of fundraising, committee work, website development and maintenance, and office support.

Poudre Wilderness Volunteers

Of course, if you want to be able to do something that relates to the trail and horses, then patrolling of trails would be the way to go. Poudre Wilderness Volunteers range from 18 – 80, according to the PWV website. They boast a broad spectrum of professions, knowledge and skills. It states on their site:

“What we have in common is our love for the wilderness and a dedication to learning and teaching Leave-No-Trace principles. We make a commitment to “hike and ride with a purpose” at least six days during the summer months. We wear a uniform shirt and name badge and serve by assisting and educating the public and protecting and conserving the resource. Other tasks that we perform while hiking: keep records and report observations and violations to the USFS; report sign and other trail-safety issues; deal with illegal/improper campsites, fire rings, and trash; report downed trees blocking trails (if can’t remove by ourselves) and noxious weed infestations; perform minor trail maintenance; and make new friends, get some exercise, and visit beautiful places.”

Alongside the positions being volunteer-based, those participating also cover the cost of their own travel, supply their own equipment and horses. There are those volunteers who go out for a day at a time, whilst others do extended stock packing patrols in the high country. If this type of volunteer work appeals to you, check out their website!

Against the Clock (Riders #6) by Samantha Alexander

December 26, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

This is the first book in the Riders series that I’ve read. That said, Against the Clock is an easy and enjoyable read. The characters are explained prior to the story, so that you can learn how everyone fits in. In Against the Clock, 15 year old Alexandra Johnson is getting motivated about the idea winning Burghley, a major three-day-event.  This is after having attended as a spectator.

Her eventing boyfriend Ash points out the sheer incredulity of her to aim for something so high. Shortly after their excursion to the great horse event, Alex is rapt to hear from Ash that Sid Shakleton, a well known dressage judge, is swinging by the stables.  These are the same stables where Ash works and rides and where Alex keeps her pony, Barney. Alex is dreaming of riding glory when she hears why Sid is coming – to check out her horse.

What starts as a dream of being discovered turns into a nightmare when Sid identifies her pony as one that belongs to someone else. Alex finds herself in a battle to prove ownership of her promising mount.  If she loses Barney, she is convinced her riding career is over. As Alex delves deeper into the scenario, Ash gets involved alongside her and finds his riding career on the line.

Against the Clock is a horse filled, educational read with a little mystery thrown in. The novel is entertaining and fast paced. Each of the characters add to the story and a glossary of terms is provided at the end to help educate readers. Worth the read.

Rural Aid… Horse Aid

December 23, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have been hearing an advert on Visionfm for Rural Aid recently and was curious. A little bit of research indicated that there are half a dozen linked websites that help out in this area. Their aim is to provide aid to rural properties and also the people in need who run them. This could be done in the form of providing Christmas Hampers for struggling families or supplying bales of hay for stock in a drought. And I got to thinking – why not a horse aid setup?

Horse Aid - Would you set up such an Initiative?
Horse Aid – Would you set up such an Initiative?

Definitely farmers find themselves at the mercy of the elements. A drought or flood can greatly impact the success of a crop or stock. And this in turn affects the ability to bring in income to support the family – and the business.

Horse Aid Initiatives

Well the same can be said for horse properties. I’m not sure if there is already something out there, but I love the idea of a business or organisation that is set up to help horse properties, specifically – horse aid. Whether it’s to help businesses gain funding for horse care, or maybe to provide horse feed in times of drought, this is necessary at times. Or perhaps emergency transport can be provided to help move horses in times of fire. Rescue of horses or sources of food could also be provided in times of flood.

I am sure that there are many ways in which horse businesses can be assisted in times of need. Although many people own horses for pleasure, many also do it for business. The racing industry in Australia is one of the top employers across the country – to have a horse aid setup to help horse businesses survive in times of trouble would greatly benefit many.

I am also sure that many people would be interested in helping such an initiative. Perhaps through donating funds or maybe through volunteering their time and skills to assist horse properties and businesses. Or maybe even through helping to spread the word about horses in need so others can assist. Horse aid – would you be interested in setting up such an initiative?

On a side note, if the idea of rural aid interests you, there are volunteering opportunities as well as the chance to donate.
