Cowgirl Lessons by Rae Rankin

June 30, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I was able to get a copy of Cowgirl Lessons by Rae Rankin. This was available for free to download on Kindle. Rae informed those taking part in the Kids Summer Reading Program about the freebie! This program is run by horse book authors from June 1 – September 1 this year.

It’s always a pleasure to discover new horse books and authors! Cowgirl Lessons is a delightful read for young people and horse fans in particular.

It would be especially beneficial for those who are just getting established in reading books. There are beautiful illustrations to match the words, which are quick and engaging. It also flows well and has rhyming sentences on each page.

Each page contains a paragraph or so of rhyming text that outlines what is important for a cowgirl. This makes the pages quick and easy to read for young horse fans.

The pages cover:

  • getting ready and dressed appropriately for riding lessons,
  • sourcing both riding boots
  • getting down to the barn or the riding school where the horses are,
  • getting your helmet and taking part in getting the horse ready including grooming it and taking it up
  • having a ride, listening to your instructor – “straight back, heels down, hands calm on the reins,” and afterwards,
  • cooling down and cleaning up, before heading home to also clean up!

Cowgirl Lessons is a short sweet read. It is one that will easily engage young horse fans. The text isn’t too challenging and it has the added bonus of rhyming at the end of sentences.

My two children aged seven and nearly nine enjoyed it and found it to be an easy read. And they also quite enjoyed the illustrations that went with the book.

Equicapture Photo App by Shelley Paulson

June 16, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I believe it takes a horse person to best capture horse photos. They recognise if a horse is correctly positioned, the handler on the right side, ears pricked forward and so on!

Shelley Paulson is a talented equine photographer. I cannot believe it’s already been six months since she was profiled on Equus Education, but it has! Check out some of her work and find out about her career here.

Shelley is promoting a newly released application for equine photographers. I was pleased to learn about it recently on LinkedIn.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, this app is packed with features to help you capture stunning photos of horses and the people who love them.”

EquiCapture features include:

  • inspiration and prompts for photo sessions
  • audio of horses whinnying to encourage the desired ‘ears forward’ position
  • tips and tutorials to guide photographers through the app
  • affirmations to keep you positive and pre-session prayer to assist in a calm and confident feeling before photography sessions
  • creative ideas linked with photography techniques to inspire you
  • recommended settings relating to lighting, horse and rider movement and more

Now I am not a photographer, but I definitely appreciate the value of a good horse photo! This application sounds awesome to me. If you are a photographer or are entertaining the idea of turning your passion for horses and photography into something more, why not check out this app?

For a one time purchase price, you can use this educational resource to build on your horse photography skills. Details on Shelley Paulson’s education site.

The Silver Pony by Holly Webb

May 30, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently my eight-year-old brought home The Silver Pony by Holly Webb. The lovely cover caught my attention. And of course, being a horse book, I thought I’d best try and read it for review before she had to return it the following week!

The Silver Pony follows the tale of young Daisy. She lives where the New Forest ponies roam free, but are owned by locals. Daisy discovers a beautiful white pony – although she admits her horsey friend would insist the pony was ‘grey’!

At a time where Daisy is missing her best friend terribly – she is unwell in hospital – Daisy finds her only sense of comfort and happiness comes from this wild pony. But in time, Daisy learns that the pony has an owner. And boy is she not happy about who that owner is!

The Silver Pony by Holly Webb

Daisy is at first intimidated by the ponies that graze close to home. But as she continues to see the ‘silver’ pony, she gives her a name and finds comfort in her presence.

And at a time when she’s not able to see her best friend due to her being in hospital, Daisy likes to think that the two of them are drawn together by this pony. It is something they can talk about over the phone and Daisy can share photos of the silver pony with her closest friend, too.

The Silver Pony is a delightful read that no doubt will engage young readers. The illustrations throughout the story are lovely and it teaches a bit about the New Forest ponies throughout the novel. Recommended reading for middle grade horse fans.

Kids Summer Reading Program

May 14, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

We’re getting closer and closer to winter here in Australia, but my kids are eagerly waiting for the upcoming Kids Summer Reading Program. This was first run last year and I took part as a participating author. The part that I love about this reading program – on top of it encouraging kids to read and promoting literacy! – is that it is horse book focused.

For children to take part, they can sign up at wereadhorsebooks.com.

You can download the reading log (use this to mark off each book that you read against their various topics and recommendations). Next, register to take part, read and complete the log activities from June – August.

Finally, submit your completed cards. If you finish by September 1st, you are eligible to win fun prizes from participating authors.

(I’m taking part as an author again this year! Book 1 from my Free Rein series is on offer in eBook format).

Kids of all ages are welcome to participate. Whether they are pre-K, early readers, middle-grade readers or young adult, it is possible to participate – and there are horse books to cover each of these age groups.

I encourage you to check out We Read Horse Books to further find out how to participate and sign up. And if you’re looking for some ideas about what to read over this time, I have reviewed many fiction and non fiction horse books right here on Equus Education.

Profile On: Sarah White, The Copy Jockey

May 7, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I stumbled across The Copy Jockey on Instagram recently and just had to check it out. I don’t know about you, but when I see the word ‘copy’, I think of someone who writes for others. And of course, with ‘jockey’, I think horses! Sarah of The Copy Jockey, was kind enough to answer some questions about what she does.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I work as an equine copywriter, so all of my working week is horse-related. I have an ex-racehorse so I spend time with him every day, but not as much as I’d like due to family responsibilities! And I have two ponies for the children. These take up a lot of time, whether feeding, moving, brushing, leading the children around, lunging etc. So the majority of my time is horse-related!

What is it exactly that you do?
I’m an equine copywriter so I help equestrian-based businesses with all their marketing words. This could be writing their websites for SEO optimisation (my specialty), sales pages, SEO-optimised blog articles, email sequences or lead magnets, or other copy (words) for marketing and selling.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full-time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes, I believe it is. I am part-time (IN my business, working ON your business never ends) as I have a limited number of hours every week between school and daycare hours to do client work. But copywriting is a career where you can earn a good income, and niching down as I have means my client pool may be smaller, but it’s more targeted, so once you build your business up and get your name out there, the sky’s the limit.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
I set myself up as my own business, so this means I have had to learn all about running a business and what comes with that. This includes learning how and where to market yourself, learning SEO and website fundamentals, how to ‘do’ social media. How to do your financial accounts, and even how to do techy stuff on computers/Google Docs/Word etc!

Gaining employment

If you want to do copywriting as a career, or to be employed in the marketing sector, you need a good grasp of what SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is, how it works, and how to do it, as copywriting goes hand in hand with SEO. Just keep learning and upskilling yourself in all areas of marketing and copywriting. (AI and how that works is the latest ‘thing’ to learn.)

Favourite horse memory?
Plenty of favourite moments, with different horses. Fantastic days out hunting on my gorgeous big racehorse Roger (when he wasn’t pulling my arms out), galloping over big hedges while team chasing on my heart horse Foue, winning events on my pony club horse Dolly. Or even further back, beating everyone, including the boys, at every showjumping competition on my little New Forest pony, Candy, when I was 10/11 years old!

Future goals?
To keep growing my business, as and when I get more time when my littlest children start school/become more independent. I would like to create some courses to help clients further with SEO, website creation, their marketing words… Also, to spend as much time in the saddle and riding with my children as I can!

Best thing about your sport/profession?
I get to work with all kinds of equestrian businesses. And if I’m in the mood for shopping, it’s awesome, as I know exactly who to go to for riding tights, or horse supplements, or saddle pads! (If you’re trying to save money that month, the temptation is not so great!)

Have you got a horse related business that may need some SEO help? Why not reach out to Sarah of The Copy Jockey for a chat?
