Worldwide Horse Riding Holidays

February 17, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’ve found another one!  I am sure there are many out there, but it’s lovely to find another business that focuses on providing horse riding holidays around the world for the equine enthusiast!

Equus Journeys (love the look of their site!!) provide details on horse riding holidays that are:

  • centre based
  • safaris
  • trail rides
  • pack trips
  • instruction
  • ranches and cattle drives

Depending on your experience, your desire to learn and do something different, it seems they cater to all types of holidays!  All look incredible to me!

Where would you ride if you could go anywhere?

Third Time’s the Charm

February 14, 2016 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

If you have access to Kindle and love reading, you should never run out of horse books! I regularly do a search in the book category for ‘horse’ and sort by price and find books consistently available for free download.

Third Time’s the Charm by Liz Isaacson

One such recently was Third Time’s the Charm: An Inspirational Western Romance by Liz Isaacson. Chelsea Ackerman has vowed she will never be engaged again; she has been twice before and both times have ended in disaster. At the cessation of her second engagement she moves back home to her parents ranch to help run the homestead of Three Rivers Ranch; something she’d never dreamed of doing.

First Lieutenant Peter Marshall works at Three Rivers Ranch. He is a cowhand but has just set up an equine assisted therapy program for war veterans, the disabled and other people who have had trauma in their lives. Pete is overwhelmed by all he plans to achieve with the program alongside his full time job. This doesn’t stop him pursuing the desire God’s placed on his heart, however.

Pete recognises that Chelsea is damaged and feels that his horses can assist her. He doesn’t realise how much her background can help him with setting up Courage Reins, his therapy program.

Over time the two struggle to fight their growing attraction and their own insecurities to see if they can work together to bring Courage Reins to life. Third Time’s the Charm is an interesting novel in that it looks at setting up an equine assisted therapy program; the one horse fact I questioned was a stallion being used in such a program, particularly alongside a mare. Other than this the story is a sweet romance, enjoyable and an interesting read.

Equine Modelling

February 12, 2016 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I was pondering last night an upcoming book cover for my Free Rein series. The latest book will be published this year and I will need to decide on a cover photo. Some horse books out there have excellent covers! Others, not so much.

Why not Model for Equine Clothes and Events?

Some photos I’ve seen of action shots – someone going over a jump – and they’ve made me cringe. Others have been ideal – a great picture, a good riding position!

It got me thinking to the possibility of being a person who is photographed for horse related publications – an equine model. This may be for many things:

  • Horse book covers
  • Horse course brochures
  • Equine magazines
  • Equine business logos
  • Explanatory photos in horse non fiction books
  • Horse clothing and riding gear for websites and catalogues
  • Horse educational posters

I’m sure there are more than just the above! If you are comfortable around horses and enjoy posing for photographs, then perhaps this is an area you may consider pursuing and promoting yourself in?

Boys Don’t Ride by Katharina Marcus

Boys Don’t Ride by Katharina Marcus

This horse novella by Katharina Marcus tells the story of 17 year old Tull, a good looking teen who may have all the girl’s attention – except the one he wants. Tull has another desire that isn’t fulfilled – his love of horses.

For as long as he can remember, Tull has loved the equine animal and devoured books about them. Although he lives with his mother and knows he can’t rely on finances from his father, Tull is determined to save up every last cent toward getting lessons. When this dream is dashed however, he gives up on the idea altogether, tearing down his horse posters and leaving his dream unfulfilled.

A chance encounter with high school oddball Liberty leaves Tull finding that he desires two things from the teen – her attentions and her horse connections.

Boys Don’t Ride is a charming story of one teen’s pursuit to learn to ride and his desire to break out of the mould that has been set for him, based on his good looks.  An interesting and entertaining story, Boys Don’t Ride is an enjoyable novella. Recommended.

Profile On: Shireen Timmis, Equine Behaviourist

February 7, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Shireen and her Ex-Racer, Jazz

Shireen Timmis from Project Equine was kind enough to answer some questions about her role as an Equine Behaviourist.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
Pretty much my entire life revolves around horses or running (much to my poor boyfriend’s dismay!) Although winter is supposed to be quiet as most people turn their horses away, I am very busy with paperwork and poo picking!

What is it exactly that you do?
My fancy scientific job title is Equine Ethologist. That’s someone who studies the science of equine behaviour. So in short I am an equine behavioural consultant.
I offer my clients clear and individual advice on working with issues and I work with all issues and all types of horses: from loading issues, to helping severely damaged horses recover. I offer a very individual service as I believe that each horse-human partnership is different.
I will also be a fully qualified IHRA (Intelligent Horsemanship Recommended Associate) by the end of the year and am currently in the process of becoming an independently registered equine nutritionist.

Shireen and a Client’s Horse, Jack

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
It is, and if working with horses is something that you really want to do, then I’d definitely advise you do it. However, it is a lot of hard work and it will take many years to build up your business to a point where it is possible to live solely off the income you make, but it is extremely rewarding.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
For me, I have full honours in two Equine Science based degrees. However, the best thing for me was gaining industry experience and industry related qualifications.
I am obsessed with learning and knowledge so as well as reading everything I could possibly get my hands on, I’ve worked with some of the top people in their sector of the equine industry and I am working towards getting every relevant qualification I can. The best things for me are the degrees that I hold as I have a scientific background which enhances the work I do.

Favourite horse memory?
That’s a difficult one as I have so many! Over the summer I worked with a lovely racehorse who had not had the best of starts, and he was terrified of everything and everyone. He used to huddle in the back of his box and shiver if anyone came near him and he hated his ears being touched.
I worked with him for about three weeks and by the end of it I could tack him up and play with his ears. He even started to put his head over the door and whicker every time he saw me which was very rewarding!

Future goals?
Business wise I’d really like my company to become truly international as although we already do a lot of work in this country and Ireland I’d like to branch out further into Europe and America. I’d also like to have a series of yards throughout the UK so we can offer an immediate service to anyone who requires it.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
Best thing about being an Equine Behaviourist is that the difference we make is very obvious. You can see the changes happening, sometimes it happens very slowly, but eventually you reach the end goal and it’s so rewarding to see a partnership between horse and rider blossom at the end of it.
