Unicorn Keep

May 16, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Unicorn Keep by Angelia Almos

The well known mages travel from village to village, seeking out those pure of heart between the age of 10 and 15. Jiline and Madelen fear being chosen, but for differing reasons.

Jiline has no desire to be chosen for a life of keeping the unicorns safe, a form of imprisonment against her choosing. Madelen is spoken for, ready to marry her love, the mayor’s son.

A magical orb is utilised to find those who are pure of heart; lighting up as it passes by the individual. Jiline finds after the mages’ visit that it is her parents’ desire that she goes. There are no male prospects for her and no apprenticeships she can undertake. She would become a burden for her family as she aged.

When Madelen is chosen and Jiline isn’t, a plan forms between the two girls that look alike. Jiline questions if she will be found out; a fraud heading for the unicorn keep.

When she arrives and starts the gruelling tests to become a unicorn keeper, she finds many questions are raised about the unicorns and how they are protected. It seems that the mages aren’t what they proclaim to be, and as one mage finds himself drawn to Jiline, further questions are raised about how this link is possible.

Unicorn Keep aptly explores a mystical world in which magic is well used, but not gifted upon everyone. It is a great mix of adventure, mystery and a little romance.

The story ends just where a second follow on novel could easily pick up.

Breeding the Mare Online Course

May 13, 2015 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Mare Physiology is an Interesting Topic

Well I had been toying with the idea of creating educational courses through this blog relating to horses, in particular breeding. A few months ago I was made aware of the educational online platform, Udemy and their one live horse course.

The setup seemed great and I was keen to get a course up there within 30 days and so set myself the challenge. I had 90% of the content done within this time frame, but it took me a little longer than planned to get the course live.

However, the end result has been achieved! I now have a course life on the Udemy website, which you can find at Breeding the Mare.  This link is a discounted version, so if you know of anyone who has an interest in learning mare physiology, point them towards the above link!

PerformAir – Animal Transport Ventilation

PerformAir – Ventilation for Your Equine Vehicle

I’ve recently been made aware of this company and although I hadn’t even considered it as a possible horse related career, it is a great one!

The horse’s respiratory system is a delicate one and it’s important that they get proper ventilation wherever they are housed.  With domesticated horses, we often travel them in floats or trucks, keep them in stables and other confined areas where quality ventilation can come into question.

PerformAir – Animal Transport Ventilation have this issue covered when it comes to transporting the equine.  It’s a great looking add on to your float or truck!

PerformAir continues to invest in the research, development and commercialisation of technologies that provide improved welfare conditions for animals during road transport.

Andromeda – Sustainable Rubber for the Horse Industry

May 1, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’ve recently connected with someone who represents Andromeda – Used Rubber Belt Specialists.

Rubber surfacing is particularly safe for horses.

For me, a company that is able to reuse a product and provide something that is sustainable (and for the equine industry!) gets a big thumbs up!

These guys don’t specifically cater to just the horse industry, but they definitely do make products that can be of benefit to horse owners:

  • rubber fencing
  • matting for walkways such as within a stable or washbay
  • stalls or dividers
  • feeders

They’re Australian based and if you have a need for a horse friendly surface, why not Equine Products at Andromeda?

May Challenge – Diversify

April 30, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The challenge for growing your equine career this month is one word: diversify. I believe for you to be able to race ahead in any industry, it is important that you can branch out from one area of expertise, to many areas of knowledge.

Now I’m not saying you should be the jack of all trades (and master of none), but work to become a skilled and knowledgeable equine worker in one industry with capabilities in other areas, too. You never know when these will be necessary, so create them before they are!

I started out in the horse breeding industry and always landed another job before leaving one. Although I could stay in the breeding industry year round, I was keen to try other facets of the equine industry.

One such opportunity came in the form of an offer to teach horse studies – after I’d gained a teaching qualification. I was blessed in that I could do this on my weekends off (every other weekend) whilst still working as a stud hand. Then I was able to walk straight into a teaching position.

Another time alongside stud work, I studied to become a horse riding instructor and this study lead to securing work as a stable hand at a riding school, and teaching at another riding school nearby.

Currently my contract has finished for teaching at TAFE and I cannot undertake work with racehorses or the 12 day fortnight on a stud due to family commitments. You never know where life is going to lead you, but you can be better prepared to take on job opportunities if you are willing to diversify your skills. If you can study to improve yourself while working, go for it!
