Friday Feature: Veterinarian (Equine)

January 31, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This week’s letter is V.  I don’t have any jobs under U at this stage! If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Tourism (Equine).

An equine veterinarian is someone who may find themselves needing to be familiar with all facets of the equine life.  Knowledge of stallions, pregnant mares, newborn foals, growing horses, racing horses, competing horses and older horses are all necessary.  Often if people want to specialise with horses, they will first need to gain experience in a mixed practice (small and large animals).

An Equine Skeleton Model in Chantilly, France

Once a lot of general experience has been gained, vets can often specialise. This may be in the area of:

  • reproductive work
  • corrective work on a horse’s conformation (generally their legs)
  • working with racehorses or other equine athletes
  • surgeries such as colic

All veterinarians should be familiar with horse health, their skeletal and muscular systems, cardiovascular, reproductive/urinary systems, digestive system and general conformation. Long hours should be expected, particularly if working during the breeding season or with racehorses that start work early in the morning.

For those keen to build up their experience in a particular area (for example, horse reproduction), travel should be considered to take advantage of the southern and northern hemisphere running on opposite seasons.

Large Animal Rescue Workshop in Wodonga

January 31, 2014 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

5th or 6th of April this year, there are two one day workshops focused on Large Animal Rescue.  I received an email last week from uni about this and thought I’d pass on the details.

On the flyer it states what is covered:

  • LEARN what you should and should not do in an emergency
  • PREVENT the horse from being killed or severely injured by unsafe rescue techniques
  • AVOID becoming a statistic

For those who book before February 21st, the fee is $120, otherwise it’s $150.  This fee includes a copy of “Equine Emergency Rescue”, which is listed as valued at $35.  It’s run in Wodonga, which is North East Victoria, Australia.

For more information, or to book a place, contact:
Kelly Bick, E: kbee@westnet.com.au, P: 02 6071 0210 A/H

February Challenge (Education)

January 30, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

The February challenge for Equus-Blog is perhaps one of my favourite things: education.

Over the whole of 2014, I encourage you to work to better educate yourself. February can be a great time of year to set yourself an education related goal. This may be achieved a myriad of different ways:

  • enrol in a course
  • set a goal to read a certain number of books on a particular topic/s by the end of 2014 (eg: 12, 1 a month)
  • create a list of questions for yourself that you’d like to research and have answered by a certain date
  • attend horse events throughout the year where you can learn more about a particular discipline or breed, meet new contacts and perhaps even score some short term (or long term!) work experience or a job
  • ask lots of questions of horse experts that you come into contact with (be curious!)

I love to learn, in particular about horses, so I am doing a few of the above things.

  1. My equine science degree at Charles Sturt University starts back in March so I will be back studying (I’m already reading one of the prescribed text books to try and get ahead);
  2. I have enrolled in the 3 free online courses run by CAFRE and am into the second half of the first short course this week;
  3. I am aiming to read at least one book a month, many of which are horse related (you can learn from fiction and non fiction);
  4. Often I will have questions for my farrier when she trims my horse’s feet and the property owner where I keep my horse – there’s no end to the learning!

Remember from the January challenge that goals are more likely to be achieved if you’re accountable to someone for them. Write them down, tell people and of course – set an end date so that you have a good form of pressure reminding you that something needs to be done! For more on achieving goals, check out my article on Setting SMART Goals.

Until next month’s challenge, good luck and be sure to comment and let me know what your planned goals are 🙂 I’d love to read about them!

To learn all that a horse could teach, was a world of knowledge, but only a beginning… – Mary O’Hara

Wordless Wednesday

January 29, 2014 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

On any given Wednesday, I’ve decided to share an equine or equine related photo here on Equus-Blog.  I was doing so on the Equus Education Facebook page but want to be able to keep a record of it here.

Technically I may have a word or two to share about the photo, so it’s not exactly ‘wordless’, but alliteration has such a nice ring to it!

So, because I received a lovely camera for my birthday late last year, I’m going to work on putting it to use and (hopefully) improving my photography skills whilst building up more of an equine collection for this blog, my informative articles and other forms of education.

So here’s todays:

Friday Feature: Tourism, Equine

January 24, 2014 by Christine Meunier 3 Comments

This week’s letter is T. If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Stud Hand.

Tourism with regards to horses can come in many forms.  Chances are it’ll combine two things: horses and a chance to learn more about the location they’re in.

Traveling on Horseback in South Africa

You may find you get to explore a particular country or town on horseback as the form of tourism, perhaps shown areas that only the locals know about or you may find that the focus is on a particular breed of horse or discipline that you can learn about only in that area.

Because it can be varied, skills of those working in the horse tourism field may differ.  Some skills required in any field could include:

  • knowledge of horse health and care
  • mucking out boxes, picking up paddocks/fields
  • dealing with people
  • local knowledge
  • horse riding skills or horse handling skills

I have adored horse tourism in the form of trail rides in Ireland, Australia and South Africa; visiting many horse related museums in France and Ireland and of course studying at the Irish National Stud where you can learn horses in another country whilst also working at a property that teaches others about thoroughbred breeding and racing.  I dream of one day visiting Machu Picchu on horseback.

“We gaze upon their quiet beauty, their natural elegance, and we are captivated. They see us softly, in gentle light… rewarding human companionship with strength, grace and intelligence. As they run through arenas and open fields, past mountains and seas, moving like the wind toward heaven, we travel with them, if only in our hearts.” – Author unknown
