Kentucky Equine Management Internship

April 4, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I’ve been emailing an equine author (Price McNaughton) and got to discussing courses in the industry.  She mentioned one that is run in the United States, the KEMI course.

After asking about it, I was informed this stands for the Kentucky Equine Management Internship.

A Thoroughbred Stallion

This program is focused on upskilling college students keen to pursue an equine management career.

Run over a 6 month period, this internship combines academic studies and hands on experience, with participants working on a Central Kentucky horse farm.

An added benefit of the internship is the introduction to a network of equine professionals spanning varying careers.  For those interested in furthering their thoroughbred or horse career, perhaps this is worth a look!  You can choose to apply for:

  • the spring (breeding/foaling over January – June)
  • the fall (yearling/racing/performance over July – December)

International students are welcome to apply but should contact the KEMI office before applying to the program.  Applications will need to include a completed application form, copies of college transcripts and 3 letters of recommendation.

Interested?  Then I encourage you to check out the above link!

Free Horse eBooks!

April 2, 2013 by Christine Meunier 3 Comments

It may be of no surprise to readers of this blog that I love collecting horse books.  The greater scheme of owning so many horse books is to have a library available on my hubby’s and my future property so that horse crazy kids can read about horses when they’re not out working and playing with them.

I’m a bit behind on the ebook phase, but am currently researching methods to make my novel available this year (I finished writing it it Februrary!).

Which Horse Book Would you Love to Download?

I have a copy of iBooks on a work iPad that I was able to download for free, and decided to research how books are displayed as an electronic copy.  A search in the store for horse brought up many books that are available to download for free!

  • A Horse’s Tale by Mark Twain
  • Funny Horse Cartoons – Exposes the Truth written and illustrated by Kay Thornton
  • Dexter the Last Navy Horse by Valarie M. Vine
  • The Legends of Arth – the Horse in the Night by Randy Massey

I’ve downloaded 7 books at this stage, including those listed above.  Many have been free short stories, but one is a non fictional piece and two are the length of novels.  I’m up for even more reading!

For those who have iPads or a kindle or another form of technology in which they can access eBooks, I’d encourage you to do a search for free horse books – who knows what gem you may find!

King of the Ranges Scholarship

April 1, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

This one’s for the stockmen and women out there!  I received it as a notification as part of my equine science degree.  It’s titled the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge.

What is it?  There is a 2013 $1500 study/training scholarship on offer. Things to note:

A Stockman from the King of the Ranges Site
  • Applications close April 7th, 2013
  • It’s open to 16 – 20 year olds
  • Applicants should be residing in the Greater Hunter or New England North West Regions
  • Applicants must have started or be starting a course or apprenticeship in line with horses, cattle or other Agricultural pursuits

There is a lot more information provided at the Scholarship Entry Page.  The winner will be announced early May at the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival in Murrurundi, New South Wales, Australia.

It can be difficult for young adults to break into the agricultural industry skilled and qualified.  This is perhaps even moreso true this year due to funding changes with the government affecting TAFE costs.  Scholarships like this can be a major leg up!

Equitana is being held in Sydney, Australia this year and the volunteering application process is now open!  I volunteered one year in Melbourne and had an absolute ball.  As always, there are different areas in which you can put yourself forward to help out:

  • Competition – assistance with competition set ups and running
  • Education – assistance with running of educational areas
  • Exhibition – assistance with the operation of information stand & customer service
  • General Office Administration – assisting organisers as required, may include VIP assistance
  • Evening programs in Grand Pavilion Indoor Arena – assistance with ushering and arena set up
  • Stables & Breed Village – assistance with general stable duties
  • Transfer Team – assistance with escorting horses and their handlers throughout venue
  • “Floater” – combination of all above mention duties

Equitana is to be held November 7 – 10, at the Sydney Showground (1 Showground Road, Sydney Olympic Park, NSW 2127).  Perhaps you may like to take a look at the volunteer page on the Equitana site for more details.

Equine Acupuncture

March 25, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

One of our students this year is studying two courses. Curious about her second course, I asked and was informed that it was an acupuncture course with Alan Moffat.

A search online brought the result of the Equine Acupuncture Training School.  They offer:

  • Equine Therapeutic Acupuncture  Course (1 year Diploma)

There are also resources detailed online with regards to accupressure and acupuncture including books, charts, videos and articles.  For those interested in this side of equine learning, it may be worth checking out 🙂

Links regarding bowen therpay and photonics are also provided, introducing horse learners to other alternative therapies that are available.
