Equine Invention

March 23, 2013 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

There are many products yet to be made for the equine world.  Many are being perfected, whilst others are currently being researched to see if they are a viable idea.

Do you have an idea of a product or service that could make things easier for equine carers or the horses themselves?  Perhaps you’d like to take a look at this article from September last year, Shining new light on equine innovation.  (Just ignore the incorrect spelling of Coolmore).

Dr. Murphy of Ireland created a product Equilume that has the potential to greatly contribute to the thoroughbred breeding world.  A few things are stated in the article:

  • “Globally, thoroughbred breeding is a multi-billion dollar industry spread across five Continents; a product that promises to enhance its breeding programmes has significant commercial potential. The estimated market value worldwide for a product such as the light mask is in excess of €60 million.”
  • “The Equilume mask was successfully trialed on a large scale in the US earlier this year and considerable interest has already been shown in the product by a number of breeders around the world. Dr Murphy is hoping to have the mask made in Ireland and in full-scale production by 2013.”

How exciting to be a part of designing a product that has such a large potential market!   And this is possible because of the size of the horse industry worldwide.

Equilume gained interest through the Enterprise Ireland ‘One to Watch’ award.  Do you know of initiative’s in which you can get your idea known and gain backing funding?  Perhaps it’s worth a search online!

A product that caught my interest back in 2011 was an Eco Rocker – a rocking horse that is easily recycled.

This although horse related, is a product that perhaps more appeals to parents and those who consume products for children.  There is a lot of potential for growth in equine related creations.

Do you have an idea?  It could be one that down the track you will be educating others about the benefits of – who knows? 🙂

Friesian Keuring

March 18, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

For those that are familiar with the Friesian breed, they may be familiar with the Keuring process of the stud book.  For any Friesian to be in the stud book, they need to be assessed based on conformation and movement, and down the track if used for breeding, their progeny will be assessed to see if they’re passing on desirable qualities.  If not, this may affect their eligibility in the stud book!

Keuring doesn’t happen every often in Australia (less than once a year).  It is occurring this month!  You can find out details on the Australian and New Zealand Friesian Horse Society website.  As it states on the website, Keuring is occuring (pardon the pun) around Australia and is open to the public!

A Friesian Stallion

“All keuring locations are open to the public and are the central location for Friesian Horse inspections in that state or island.

  • 17 March – keuring WA – State Equestrian Centre, Brigadoon
  • 19 March – keuring SA – Mallala Equestrian Centre, Mallala
  • 21 March – keuring Tasmania – Wallbrook Friesian Stud, North Motton
  • 23-24 March – keuring Victoria, Juravon Equestrian Centre, Melton
  • 26 March – keuring New Zealand South Island, Motukarara Racecourse, Canterbury
  • 27 March – keuring New Zealand North Island, Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge, Hamilton
  • 30-31 March – keuring Queensland, State Equestrian Centre, Caboolture
  • 2 April – keuring NSW, Sydney Polo Club, Richmond

The KFPS jury team is Louise Hompe, KFPS inspector and Luciel Ellens, judge.  General keuring inquiries can be directed to Wendy Fisher, ANZFHS secretary.”

For those in the Victoria vicinity that have this weekend free, perhaps you may like to check out the event at JurAvon Park.  Remember, any horse event is an opportunity to learn and network!

Stick to What you Know, add from What you Don’t

March 18, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Horses and money are two of my favourite things. Education I believe is the key to improving in both of these areas.

An example – undertaking a course about horses as we have students doing at the National Centre for Equine Education helps to learn more about horses, reinforce what is already known and gain a piece of paper to say they’re qualified if competent at the end of the course. This is an example of sticking to what you know (horses) and adding to what isn’t known (learning more about horses).

Where does the money come into it? Students who completed their course last year have gained contacts and practical skills that led to employment on stud farms. Horses have the potential to be your job, or your career. What’s the difference? I guess that depends on who you ask.

Where is Your Horse Path Taking you?

For me, a job is one that you do to earn an income. This is possible solely by sticking to what you know about horses and doing this for someone else. A career for me involves adding regularly to:
• your skills base
• your horse related contacts
• your potential annual income (a higher qualification, more responsibility and capabilities can increase this)
• industry related aspirations (do you have a bucket list?)

Consider another example: this blog. This blog birthed from what I knew about horses and education, but was added to as I researched and learnt more about possible disciplines, courses and careers with horses.

Unexpected (but welcome) requests to advertise on this blog have led to earning sporadically based on what I’ve written. Adding to this, I sought out other ways that I could earn for writing about horses (hence Suite101).

A downside of writing for another and relying on that as a source of income is if things go wrong, you may be left without this financial source.

However, if I stick with what I know (this blog) and am only adding with what I don’t know (Suite101), then I can always fall back on the blog as my main source of writing horses and potential income. Anything from another source is a bonus, but shouldn’t be solely relied on.

So! Do you have a job in which you can rely on, but are able to branch out and improve your skills and possible sources of income at the same time? Perhaps this is a way to build up an impressive resume and put away a substantial amount for future goals.

LinkedIn for Resumes and Networking

March 17, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Every horse person should have a resume. It can help in a multitude of ways. Initially, it allows you to determine what skills and qualifications you have currently. From here it may:

  • Help in securing your first job
  • Help you to realise what an incredible addition you’d be to someone’s team of employees
  • Be ready made when someone offers you a job and suggests you give them a copy of your resume
  • Be added to as you achieve more with regards to skills

There’s an online networking website called LinkedIn. On here you can list your resume, which can be a great way for potential employees to see what you’re capable of and what you’ve achieved.

The site is called LinkedIn because the aim of it is to connect (or link) with people who could help you progress with your career. These people could be work colleagues, employers, business owners, company starters, self employed – you name it! The great thing about LinkedIn, is that once you’re connected with someone directly, then you’re within contact reach of all of their connections.

For example, if you look up Christine Meunier on LinkedIn, you ask to connect with me and I accept, you’re then connected by this one contact with people that:

  • Manage studs
  • Work for racing organisations
  • Teach equine studies
  • Run their own businesses

The list goes on. If you’re not already on LinkedIn but are serious about increasing your contact base and showing off your resume, I encourage you to do so. There are also discussion groups on many topics that you can join and participate in.

And added bonus is that your connections can endorse you for the work you claim to be able to do.  Check it out!

March Equus Education Blog Carnival

March 14, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Hi everyone!

I skipped having a February Blog Carnival with regards to equine education as there weren’t any suitable submissions (there seemed to be a lot about being a nanny! ;))  In all honesty, it was looking pretty similar for this month’s carnival, but we do have two valid additions:

  • April presents How To Start A Horse Rescue – Mustang Ride posted at Mustang Ride, saying, “Tips To Help You Start A Horse Rescue”
  • Christine presents Profile On: John Blackburn – Blackburn Architects saying, “A look at equine architecture.”

So grab yourself a cuppa or cool drink and enjoy the read!  And why not consider taking part in the next Equus Education Blog Carnival!  Submit your blog article to the next edition of equus education using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.
