Ace the Black Stallion by Ann Feifel

June 13, 2021 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I was recently approached by Ann Feifel about reading and reviewing her first novel: Ace the Black Stallion. This story explores the lives of the Beemer family, namely young adult Julia Beemer.

Julia grows up on a farm with parents that love and raise horses. Julia learns much from her riding and instructing mother. She also inherits her way of reading and working with horses. As Julia comes to grips with the loss of a family member, she pours her energy into the horses and spending as much time with them as she can.

In time she is able to raise and handle a beautiful black colt. The unusual white marking on his forehead in the shape of an ace of spades helps her to name him Ace. And so starts Julia’s journey with the beautiful black colt.

Ace the Black Stallion is a very informative read. Whether you’re horsey or not, the events that happen from Ace’s birth, through to his weaning and later starting under saddle are explained well by the author. This is well compared also, to the ranching neighbour who is heavy handed with horses.

As Ace grows older, Julia’s life moves on from school years to gaining employment. Throughout the years, horses are a constant although Ace vanishes without a trace, leaving the teenager devastated. In time though, Julia finds herself with a consolation prize. And so her horse training journey begins again. Ace the Black Stallion is a read that spans many years. A small mystery arises in this novel, though it doesn’t occur until more than halfway through the story. From here, things build nicely and the story has an enjoyable ending.

Moving North by Tudor Robins

June 3, 2021 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was rapt to get an ARC copy of Tudor Robins’ latest release, Moving North. Of course, all horse books I read end up here for review! This is the first book in the Perryside Series and I’ve gotta say, I loved it.

The story is told from the point of view of teenager Perry. Dealing with the loss of her mother, Perry is working frantically to keep herself busy. And that’s not hard – she’s got an aged horse to look after, a four-year-old brother to help care for and a step dad who appreciates her help around the house.

Sure, Perry is distancing herself from her closest friend and ex-boyfriend. But it’s easy to tell herself time is short and she should spend as much time with her brother Leif – creating memories – as she has. After all, who knows when their time will run out? The same can be said of her grey gelding, North. He was originally her mother’s horse. As Perry struggles to remember some aspects of her mother, Perry clings to the gelding that she is now responsible for.

As life continues at a frantic pace, Perry isn’t blind to the fact that things aren’t working. It should be a relief that she can solve her family’s current problems, but it isn’t. She could help her step dad Justin to change his work life balance, move North to a place where he can be settled and allow Leif to live in a country town where he would thrive. But this all seems wrong when a move will mean leaving the house where Perry has so many memories of her mother and their interactions.

Moving North is a well named novel and a great introduction to the Perryside Series. The characters are realistic and really likeable. The relationship between Perry and her little brother was a delight to read. If you’re looking for a new young adult read, then I encourage you to check out Tudor Robins’ latest release.

Profile On: India Wilkinson, Mane Street Market

June 1, 2021 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

India Wilkinson has recently launched the Mane Street Market application. She was kind enough to answer some questions about her application, and horse related work in general. You can read the details below and who knows? Perhaps the app might be of use to you, too!

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
6 days a week and about 10 hours a day.

What is it exactly that you do?
I created an app/website called Mane Street Market. Our goal is to serve the equestrian community by providing an online platform to market sale horses and equine businesses as well as streamline the search process for both.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full-time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes definitely but my income that supports my horses is from another field at least while we are waiting for the app to take off – we just launched on May 10, 2021.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
I am an entrepreneur at heart – I have been in corporate marketing for the last 25 years with 10 of those owning my own equestrian marketing agency focusing on sponsorships for events, riders and brands.

Just like the app – no one was really concentrating on sponsorship marketing 15 years ago in the equestrian world. I decided that I was going to create this niche and it turned out to be very profitable and so much fun! The marriage of horses and marketing is my dream job!

Favourite horse memory?
Ah!! So many! It definitely started with my first pony Diamond Jubiliee. He taught me to be tough and have grit and that has stayed with me for 45 years of being an equestrian. Easy horses do not make strong riders or people so I’m grateful for that naughty pony who was as committed to bucking me off as I was to getting back on every single time.

Future goals?
My goal is to grow the Mane Street Market app/website until the U.S. market is saturated and then we will go into Canada and Europe in 2022!

Best thing about your sport/profession?
It’s a toss up between the horses and the people. My horses keep me grounded, sane, inspired, humble and blessed. The people are supportive, hard working, tenacious, gritty, kind and I’m honored to be a part of the equestrian community.

Beautiful Horseflesh by Karen S. Bennett

May 29, 2021 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I was contacted about being sent a horse book to read and review. Of course I am always keen to add to my horse book library. And so I received a copy of Beautiful Horseflesh by Karen S. Bennett. This book focuses around a boarding and water walk farm owned by the Smitt family. Eighteen-year-old Luis Smitt is rapt to know that a promising young thoroughbred filly is coming to their farm to make use of the water walking facility. Not only that, she is also set to race in a prestigious stakes race in the near future. It’s exciting!

Luis, his mother Patrizia and sixteen-year-old Miranda Smitt know that the impending arrival of the thoroughbred filly and her trainer Bud Coleman will change their sombre lives for awhile. The three are in their own ways learning to cope with the loss of Mr. Smitt and the medical bills that are hanging around after his passing.

Bud’s good looks immediately draw in Patrizia and her teenage daughter. Miranda’s athletic physique quickly captures Bud’s attention. Suddenly Patrizia Smitt is warning her teenage daughter to steer clear of the racehorse trainer. But Miranda is not interested in her mother’s advice.

Beautiful Horseflesh is an interesting mystery that builds quite well. The story behind Bud Coleman and his secrecy about the black thoroughbred filly he so protectively watches over draws the reader in. Luis finds his awe of the older man soon dissolving. Bud often smells of alcohol, seems too interested in his younger sister and appears to have a temper. Just what is this man hiding?

Although horses feature heavily in this novel, I found that some information was incorrectly portrayed. I struggled with the accuracy of the horse information. Otherwise, the story held surprises and ended in an upbeat way but not as I envisaged. For horse fans, the technicalities may be an issue, but otherwise the story is enjoyable.
