The Horse Road by Troon Harrison

May 24, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So I’m rapt that I got this one finished before the wedding! 🙂  I’ve gotta say, this was such a delightful read!  I’m so glad Troon contacted me about writing a review!  All the more exciting for me, this was a proof copy.  The book is set to be published in August of this year – what a privilege to be able to review a proof!

The Horse Road, Troon Harrison

A historical fiction, this novel is set in Central Asia, 104BC.  14 year old Kallisto’s life revolves around horses and she plans to take advantage of spending as much time with them as possible before the date of her impending bethrothal.

Whilst out racing her buckskin stallion Gryphon, Kalli and her friend Batu spy an army of thousands making their way to the town of Ershi.  Kalli realises that it’s her mother’s well known horses that they are seeking and is suddenly racing against time to get to the family’s horses and get them away to safety.

The adventure that follows is one that shows a shy 14 year old girl having to stretch herself well out of her comfort zone to save her beloved horses.  The Horse Road is a great read and will have young readers reaching the end of the 304 pages very quickly.

For those seeking a more in depth review, check out my review at Suite101, The Horse Road.

Author: Troon Harrison

Providing Agistment to Horse Owners

May 22, 2012 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Today was a close to perfect day at work. Most of the staff and students are off at Oaklands Junction for the Great Southern Weanling Sale. I’m back at the education facility with a heap of marking to do.

But who gets to feed the horses whilst everyone is away? 🙂 So this morning started with making up feeds for the geldings, dry and pregnant mares and then a stroll out with the wheelbarrow to deposit feeds and check everyone over, glance fences and stop an overflowing water trough.

Then into the office to report that all horses are standing, nothing has a leg hanging off or is walking on three legs. Onto some marking and then in the afternoon back out to do the feed run and check again. Today was a typically gorgeous autumn day and had me thinking about when myself and the better half will be purchasing our own property in the future.

I can think of nothing more appealing than heading out in the morning to check on client’s horses before going inside to deal with book work – or some horse related writing! – and then out again in the afternoon to check over stock before it gets dark.

I’ve been trying to chase up loan information of late due to a rather appealing property for sale just out of town. It turns out because the plan is to agist horses and therefore potentially earn an income, this would come under an agribusiness loan rather than a home loan.

For those of you considering the idea of agistment as a business, make sure you have a good business plan put together if still needing to purchase property.  Considering agistment/grazing rites contracts before offering such services would probably also be worth your while.

Definitely the amount of land I’m seeking is mainly to be able to offer grazing to other horse owners – why not have them paying towards the mortgage? 😉

Using Year 10 as a Stepping Stone

May 21, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The past two weeks I’ve been along to a couple of career’s days to advertise the Certificate II in Equine Industry, Agriculture and Horse Racing courses that we offer as part of a student’s Victorian Certificate of Education (final highschool year).

When I completed my Certificate II in Horse Studies, I was able to do the course over the 12 months of year 11, but gain a Certificate II qualification and have this extra subject count towards my then TER (now ATAR). It meant I could still do 5 subjects in year 12, but also have my Cert II add an extra 10% to my score.

The students about at the career’s days were year 10 students, looking into what subjects are on offer for their final VCE years. Some I noted were already taking part in one of our Certificate II courses, however.

For those year 9 students who are looking at what they can do to increase their VCE score, or those parents who want to be able to let their children study horses but not have it take away from the 5 subjects they’re planning to complete in year 12, consider looking into doing the course instead over years 10 and 11.

This way they leave highschool with a qualification and have the chance to still do 5 subjects in year twelve, or drop down to 4 subjects for year 12 but have their Cert II count towards their end of year score. It could take some pressure off for them.

Honours Project: Equines and Stem Cells

May 10, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’ve received another email from uni, requesting participants for a survey for a student that is undertaking an honours project.  Emily Martin is carrying out her project with regards to working with equine mesenchymal stem cells.

She’s set up a questionnaire that would take about five minutes of anyone’s time – you don’t have to be a horse owner or trainer.  The idea is to better understand what the current perceptions are with regards to stem cell therapies for equines.  The questionnaire is designed for Emily to be able to “gauge current opinions and knowledge of stem cells as a therapy in horses”.

For those interested in helping out, you can find the survey at

Horse Coat Colour Calculator

May 9, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

One of my work colleagues sent throug this link as she thought it might be of interest.  I don’t know a lot about genetics and the genetics of colour with horses, but am definitely interested in it.

Of particular interest may be the coat colour calculator which can be found via the Horse Testing website.

There’s nothing like the internet for free horse information, so for those interested in genetics, colours and diseases, this informative site is worth checking out.
