Can’t I Just Retire and Read Books?

September 10, 2011 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So!

In the mail this week I’ve received two books that I’ll get read and reviewed as soon as possible.  They are:

  • Ghetto Cowboy, G. Neri
  • Belladonna, Mary Finn

I’m very much looking forward to reading these and wish I didn’t have to juggle doing so around work / study / house stuff!  But, there’s always time for a good horse book, right? 🙂

I’ve also received an email from Camille Matthews and should be receiving in the mail in the near future a couple of childrens horse books that are part of the Quincy series.  Stay tuned!

TAFE and University Open Days

August 25, 2011 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

It’s coming around to that time of year again.  For those considering the study thing, be it full time, part time or via distance education whilst working, there are a multitude of horse courses out there!

To draw your attention to two in the Melbourne, Victoria area:

  • Certificate II in Equine Industry
  • Certificate III in Agriculture (Horse Breeding)

Both courses are on offer at Box Hill TAFE, and the open day is this Sunday, August the 28th from 10am.  Open Days are a great opportunity to find out what a course offers, see how it is delivered and meet the knowledgeable teachers.  It’s never too late to start learning and gain a qualification!

Dancing Hooves

August 20, 2011 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A month or so back I was catching up with a friend who was visiting from interstate and as we were having a coffee and a chat, she handed over a book that she’d bought for me.  Only a short story, the book was made up of two things that are very important to me – horses and faith.

Needless to say, it didn’t take me long to get stuck into this analogy that compares the life of a horse confined within a dark and foreboding stall, with the bondage that people can live in on account of fear and past hurts.

Author Danielle Silvestri does a wonderful job of detailing how Christ in our lives can result in the key being found for the locked stall and freedom being offered.

Quite short in length, Dancing Hooves is a great read that will help to open the eyes of those suffering from being trapped within their own fear and bondage.  For the horse lover especially, this analogy may touch a cord with regards to oneself of another in your life.

A more detailed review that I have written can be found amongst my articles at Suite101.

In my library? Definitely.  A great read and a wonderful analogy containing the most beautiful of creatures that should always be running free.

Horses and Hospitality

August 20, 2011 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So last week I was watching some horse related DVD’s that I’d borrow from the library at work.  Of particular interest to me was finding out about a horse drawn restaurant – yes, you read correctly!

The first of it’s kind was established in Sydney around 15 years ago and a sister restaurant has also been set up in Melbourne of Australia.  What a unique idea!

How does it work?  Well the idea is quite touristy in that the owners of the carriage restaurant provide tours around the Hawkesbury region and stop off at particular restaurants, providing their passengers with fresh food from local businesses.  Originally deemed an unlikely way to introduce the Clydesdale back into the area that is known to be the birthplace of the Aussie draught horse.  Further info, take a look at Clydesdales Horse Drawn Restaurant.

This seems such a wonderful way to mix food and horses; perhaps that little bit more horse related than the Box Stallion Winery where I had an end of year work party.

“You know you’re a horse person when… you stop channel surfing at Budweiser Clydesdale commercials.”

An Innovative and Sustainable Rocking Horse

August 6, 2011 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

So I was flicking through the September issue of House and Garden yesterday and right at the back of the magazine was an item that caught my eye.  Yes, it was horse shaped!

Although I didn’t grow up with a rocking horse as a kid, I know of many that did.  Eco Rocker is the latest rocking horse on sale and this one has a bit of an interesting twist to it!  Titled ‘Reggie’, he is made of flat packed cardboard, and is designed by Shell Thomas.

Reggie the Eco Rocking Horse

Being made of cardboard, he’s able to be ‘designed’ as parents or children deem fit and once outgrown, can be recycled!

“He is blank and ready to be brought to life at home using pencils, crayons, glitter and glue and a little imagination from your young designer.”

“How to ride a horse: Step One – Mount the horse; Step Two – Stay mounted …”
