Jump on in to Werribee

May 31, 2009 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Calling all potential volunteers!

I volunteered at Equitana last year and had an absolute ball with things being very well organised by the volunteer coordinator Leasa Stephen.  She’s at it again, this time working with the volunteers in the area of Spectator Management during cross country day at Werribee.

I received an email from her today chasing up extra hands to help out with volunteering in this area, so if this may be you check out http://www.m3de.com.au/volunteers.php.

It’s next Sunday (June 7) so decide quickly!

“It is a full on day being right in the thick of the Cross Country Action. Our job is to make sure the crowds keep away from the galloping horses!!! And yep, you WILL get to see the course in action from the best seat in the house…”

For those of you free, consider the benefits of volunteering for this horse event if:
Eventing.– You want to get into event management
– It appeals to you to acquire more horsey contacts
– You like the idea of having the best seat in the house at such an event
– You want to get a feel for volunteering with regards to something horsey

“There is something about jumping a horse over a fence, something that makes you feel good. Perhaps it’s the risk, the gamble. In any event it’s a thing I need.” – William Faulkner

Doubling up to Create a Niche

May 28, 2009 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I was out walking and chatting with a mate today who’s undertaking a Diploma of Performance Horse Management and it seems they had a most interesting guest speaking to them yesterday.

Dr. Judith L. Mulholland, or the ‘farriervet‘ was out to speak to the TAFE students with regards to horse and hoof care.

I’ve just been accepted into the Bachelor of Equine Science and although I love study, couldn’t see myself dedicating the time it’d take to become a Vet, nor the body power and study it’d take to become a capable farrier.

A Vet or Farrier can Often fix Shoe ProblemsIt seems this wonderwoman has done both and now travels to teach others the things she’s put years into discovering.

So maybe you’re not interested in farriery or vet work but you do have a couple of interests with regards to horses and skills or the horse course qualification to match; consider thinking outside the square to see if you can combine the skills to create your own niche market.

After all, if your horse appears to be lame or unsound, who better to see to it’s diagnosis and treatment than a qualified farriervet?

“When in doubt, ask a horse.”

Straight from the Horse’s Heart

April 27, 2009 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A spiritual ride through love, loss and hope.

I received Straight from the Horse’s Heart in the post a couple of weeks ago and after getting a few others read and out of the way, set down to devour this book – it wasn’t hard.

I love those that you can just keep reading but get frustrated when they’re finished and there is no more!  Reading this book was just like that; being made up of around thirty short stories, all from the author’s experience.

Straight from the Horse's Heart by R.T FitchR.T obviously has a calling on his life to do something about neglect, abuse and the inhumane slaughter of horses – a call that isn’t going to let him be until he’s told everyone.

Although a burden to take on such a responsibility, there needs to be more people which such a desire to see justice for these gorgeous animals and you can be part of that – the proceeds of this book go toward www.habitatforhorses.org.  Read more on the site or perhaps you’d like to read the R.T Fitch ‘Profile On.’

The book in itself is an eye opener and challenges you, the reader to not be moved by what goes on in slaughterhouses around the world.

As the author himself states: “…read with an open mind and accept only what your heart tells you to accept.”

Some of the things in this book don’t resonate with me but it doesn’t change the fact that the stories are powerful and they make the reader aware of this crime against horses.

With knowledge comes responsibility and I can only hope that all readers of this book take in the depictions of the gorgeous characters and what their kind are subjected to and then choose to act upon this knowledge.  It starts with one but can move so much faster with many more – you can start with one action; read this book and be moved.

Racing Secretary

April 23, 2009 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

Being rather a fan of computers/office work and horses, it seems a surprise I didn’t consider merging the two and taking on the likes of a racing secretarial role.

There are places that have staff that tend to help out with the morning work – exercising horses or perhaps vet work and mucking out boxes and then they settle in the office for the rest of the day.  Or perhaps a sleep in is appealing and you’d prefer to work in the office from say, 9 in the morning and help with the afternoon feed run?

If your interest lies in horses and you’re strong with regards to office skills – typing, word processing, use of the Internet, payroll and tax – as well as knowledge in entering horses into races and sales, vet records and phone skills, your boss may just consider you heaven sent!

Need more information?  RacingAcademy.ie provides a good description of this role within Ireland as well as other roles in the racing industry – http://www.racingacademy.ie/content.asp?id=45

The article Life as a Racing Secretary would also be worth a look – http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/careers/article.php?aid=112367

The British Racing School offers a short course – http://www.brs.org.uk/Courses/Other_Courses/Racing_Secretaries/ as well as a general eye opener with regards to the racing industry – http://www.brs.org.uk/Courses/TRIC_-_THE_Racing_Industry_Course/.  Either could be of interest to those interested in working in an office on an equine property.
