A Love Divided by Belle McInnes

October 26, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A Love Divided is book one of the Mary’s Ladies series. I don’t think I’ve read any of Belle’s books before. But I got a sneak peak at this book perhaps a year or two ago. The excerpt in question was a scene where the local warden is mesmerised by someone riding their horse. As the high end dressage movements are carried out, Michael approaches the person. He is keen to learn how to ride like that.

And so from reading this previously, I was keen to read the whole book. So naturally when it came up free on Kindle recently, I was keen to download a copy to read and review!

A Love Divided by Belle McInnes

When the Scottish warden, Michael discovers that the rider is a beautiful young woman – and not a young lad as presumed – he is further keen to have that riding lesson. And so starts an encounter between two very different people that builds at a time when the Scottish and English do not accept or trust each other.

A Love Divided provides a lot of history of Mary Queen of Scots and the English reivers who will steal cattle and horses. The politics of running and protecting a country are explored well. Throw in a forbidden romance between a Scottish man and an English young woman and the story is an enjoyable historical romance. The horse focus on dressage and the way this is explored in different scenes just added to the appeal. An entertaining read with a lovely horse aspect.

Freedom, book one in the Freedom Series was recently available for free download on Amazon. I’m quite a fan of Angela’s supernatural horse books for younger readers. So it should come as no surprise that I was eager to download this one to read.

Young Jani is greatly disappointed by her parent’s decision to relocate. She will be starting a new school and leaving behind the school and friends that she knows. Her best friend who she rides with and the riding stables she adores will also be left behind. The only silver lining is that her beautiful paint mare Keeta is coming with them and will be able to have her own pasture and barn.

Jani’s mum is excited about the move and their new property. She is eager to show her daughter the house but Jani is more interesting in seeing where her horse will be living.

The pasture looks great whilst the barn is old and dark. Jani is happy with the news that her parents plan to build a new one – it will only be temporary. And yet, as Jani prepares for her mare’s arrival, there is something off about the barn. She finds herself scared by a dark shadowy mass inside.

With the arrival of her father and Keeta, Jani pushes the unpleasant experience away, telling herself she imagined it. But then when her beautiful mare starts hanging around the barn instead of out in the beautiful grassy pasture, Jani knows something is up.

Although the young girl is still saddened at moving away from her best friend Maria, she finds a new friend in local girl Penny. Penny too is horse mad, even though she doesn’t have a horse of her own. In time the two discover an incredible story behind the barn and a horse that used to be kept there. Freedom is an interesting paranormal story that explores working with horses rather than capturing and beating them into submission. An enjoyable read.

Profile On: Ross Prowd – Owner Turf Monthly

October 16, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Ross Prowd, owner of Turf Monthly shares about his new venture.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
Pretty much all of it.

What is it exactly that you do?
I have just started up Turf Monthly, so I am busy writing, editing and designing a digital magazine. On top of that, I also still freelance, and continue to do a little bit of work as a bloodstock consultant and pedigree analyst.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full-time professional and earning a liveable income?
Everything is possible, but as a new venture, I am confident that it can maintain an income. Like most working in the industry, it is a labour of love. Economic decisions are secondary to the aim of Turf Monthly, which is to bring alive those great champions of the past so they become more than just a name on a pedigree page.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
I studied as a journalist but maintained a strong interest in racing although never considered a career in that field. I pursued involvement in the industry as a hobby, but if you keep your eye out for opportunity, it can come in different forms.

Also I got to know the people at “The Sportsman” and was offered an opportunity to write for that great publication. That opened doors to writing for other industry magazines, and eventually helped me into an Administrative role at race clubs. The more people I talked to, and the more horses I was around, the more I studied and became interested in certain aspects of the industry, particularly pedigrees and history. Turf Monthly combines these interests and seems a natural evolution.

Favourite horse memory?
There are so many of them, that it is a difficult question to answer. One that always stands out is Octagonal’s win in the AJC Derby, a race that I am featuring in the November edition of Turf Monthly. I watched that race in a hospital room waiting for the birth of my daughter who was born a few hours later.

Future goals?
My goal is to reconnect people with the thoroughbred. It wasn’t that long ago that the horse was central to life, and we had a strong connection to them. Working at race clubs, you learn that going to the races is often the first-time people get to see a horse in the flesh. You can see the impact these wonderful animals have. There really is something almost spiritual about the connection to the horse and you can actually see this in the way people interact with the horse.

As an industry, we do not want to forget the magic, and we need to share it with others. On the other hand, in a modern world, I see that commercial aspects often are harming the breed. From a pedigree side, I want to help people understand that breeding the best and soundest horse possible is more important than a few dollars to be made in a sales ring.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
The connection with the horse. No matter what section of the industry you are in, just about everyone shares a love of the thoroughbred. They might express it differently, but I think it helps generate that sense of inclusion that has always been such a big part of the culture.

Discovering the Doctor by Calle J Brooks

October 12, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I love the cover of this one that I recently downloaded on Amazon. The story has proven to be enjoyable, too. Though I must admit – it took me a little bit to get my head around all the characters! Discovering the Doctor follows the lives of the Masterton family and the Tyler family.

Phillipa – Pip – isn’t a fan of people in general, men specifically. After an attack in her late teens, Pip finds it hard to be in groups of people. She finds tall, strong men especially intimidating, which is the slightest bit difficult considering who her sister Phoebe is married to.

Phoebe fell for Joel and the two were married, resulting in one of the beautiful red headed women of the Tyler household moving into the Masterton home. Throw in a younger sister who became their maid and the Masterton men find themselves surrounded by the beautiful women.

Discovering the Doctor by Calle J Brooks

Matthew Masterton is the town vet; he’s not immune to the Tyler women’s charms. Pip and her love of horses as drawn him in completely. Matt just doesn’t know how to break through the barrier that Pip has erected – or why she even has one in the first place. He just knows that the petite red head has stirred up feelings in him that won’t go away.

With a hot shot movie director trying to film his latest movie in town – and his eyes on Pip for the lead – Matt finds that his plans to woo the young women suddenly have competition. Add in the man who attacked her and ascertained her negative feelings for men being back on the scene and Matt has his work cut out for him. How can he convince this beautiful, timid woman that the doctor is worth discovering?

Discovering the Doctor has a small horse focus and is an enjoyable read.

Hannah (Farraday Country #8) by Chris Keniston

October 5, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I truly do love how easy it is to do a search for horse on Amazon, filter by Kindle books and then view the lowest priced – free! – ones available. The eighth book in the Farraday Country series was one of the books that came up free in my search recently. And I’m glad it did! Hannah Farraday is a young woman who is blessed to be able to do something she loves. She works with horses, focused on therapeutic riding for people with cognitive issues.

We’re introduced to Hannah as a new therapeutic program is being set up at her cousin’s place. It seems that Hannah has moved from a city job where she had developed herself in the role of therapeutic work with horses. Now she is planning to build up such a program on her cousin’s property. They just need suitable horses and clients.

Hannah (Farraday Country #8) by Chris Keniston

Hannah takes one of the possible horses out for a ride and finds herself thrown from the horse. It got spooked by a motor bike. The rider is concerned about her fall and insists on seeing her home safely.
Dale Huebner is wanting to lie as low as possible. But when he causes Hannah to be thrown from her horse, he finds himself caught up in the Farraday household. It’s easy to get drawn into their laid back nature, great sense of humour and incredible cooking. Still, Dale makes his leave as soon as he can…. only to find himself at a B and B run by someone in the family.

The best laid plans don’t always come to fruition. As Dale makes to leave the town that he’d only planned to stop in overnight, a health issue forces him to stay.

Hannah is an interesting horse story with some mystery, a hint of a romance and the great topic of using horses to help people heal. A great read. Interested in checking out this series? The first book is free on Chris’ author site!
