Mesmerized by a Horse Whisperer by Carol Colyer

April 27, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Mesmerized by a Horse Whisperer is another book I recently downloaded on Kindle to read and review. It was free from a recent horse search on Amazon. It took a little while for me to realise but the horse person in this story was the female protagonist. I had assumed it would be the male so was pleasantly surprised to find otherwise!

Young Cate (Catori) is an Indian woman who was adopted by an American family at the age of eight. This story is a historical romance. Fast forward fifteen years and the young woman now known by locals as Cate finds herself as accepted as she can hope for in the small, growing town of Fairbrush.

The arrival of her adopted sister’s cousin Riley Shaw suddenly turns everything on its head. Cate can admit that Riley is attractive and has a captivating personality. But as the young man’s wariness of the Indian woman turns to curiosity, she eagerly accepts the challenge to teach him to ride horses and care for them.

Riley cannot deny his attraction to the clever horse whisperer.  He is pleased in time to find it is returned but as the two work together to set up the business Riley came to Fairbrush to start, Cate can’t help but question if her happiness will last.

As Riley’s wealthy background catches up with him, Cate is dismayed to learn of his father’s racism and control over his son.  Mesmerized by a Horse Whisperer is an entertaining read where horses are regularly featured.  Throw in a focus on Indian tribal culture, women working and the fashion world with a delightful Frenchman and you have an enjoyable read. The romance is lovely and the story ends beautifully.

Fools Rush In by Cora Marie Colt

April 6, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I received an advanced copy of Fools Rush In by Cora Marie Colt to read and review.  This book was just released at the start of April so if it appeals to you, be sure to get one of the first copies.

Fools Rush In is a racing into romance novella.  It focuses on Dasha and Wyatt Lane – a brother and sister pair who have recently acquired some racehorses.  They are instructed by their deceased father to sell off the horses and utilise the money to pay the horses’ trainer, Oliver Way any outstanding debts.

From the get-go, the pair rub Oliver up the wrong way.  The down to earth racehorse trainer is frustrated by the high society brother and sister and yet… he can’t deny an attraction to Dascha.  It seems the feeling is mutual. But Oliver isn’t ready to have his heart crushed by another female.

As Oliver works with the pair to put their father’s horses into claiming races, Dascha finds herself drawn to the racehorse trainer.  But then his actions come across as underhanded and she feels her disappointed response is stronger than it should be.  Throw in Wyatt’s own fascination with the man and things get messy and confusing for the three involved.

Fools Rush In by Cora Marie Colt

Fools Rush In is an interesting and quirky look at the racing world from the eyes of two people that are just learning what it’s all about.  The novella travels at a good pace and has some amusing points that bring in a touch of humour.  For those who enjoy a short horse racing focused read with some romance thrown in, be sure to check out Fools Rush In and Cora’s other upcoming books.

Finding Home by Corinne Joy Brown

March 30, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I was recently asked if I would be interested in reading and reviewing a horse book for middle grade readers.  Corinne Joy Brown’s book is titled Finding Home.  It explores the lives of wild mustangs and the struggle they go through to survive in the wild.  It also follows the journey of a horse mad young girl who is desperate to own a horse – specifically, a wild mustang.

Finding Home starts being told from the point of view of a young golden horse.  This wild mustang filly known as Pahaska, enjoys life with her mother and other herd members.  It is once she’s a few years old that she is caught up in a helicopter muster.  Young Pahaska finds that her life changes drastically over the next few days.

She looses her mother, develops a fear for helicopters and has no idea what to expect when she is auctioned off and expected to load into a small, dark trailer.

The filly with the golden coat and curly hair is renamed Curly Girl by her adoring new owner.  Although young Jesse is rapt to finally have a horse of her own, she is impatient to get the filly to the boarding stable that she has organised.  Her Uncle Joe needs to first gentle the filly, start her under saddle and ensure she is safe.

The days pass by incredibly slowly.  It feels to Jesse that her Curly Girl will never arrive.

Finally the day arrives and Jesse finds that her exciting adventure has truly begun.  The arrival of the horse soon turns everything upside down and Jesse is devastated to find all of her plans fall down around her.  The solution that her Uncle Joe proposes is far from appealing.

And yet, as the young girl explores a relationship with her new horse, she redevelops an old one with her distant father.  Finding Home does a wonderful job of enlightening readers about horses – particularly the plight of the American mustang.  It also looks at family dynamics and explores the hope that can be found in a family being restored.  It was an enjoyable read and the illustrations by Ginny McDonald only added to the story.  These were beautifully done, giving wonderful imagery to the book.  Recommended.

Love before Midnight by Kathleen Ball

March 23, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I was once loaned a book by Kathleen Ball from a colleague and horse enthusiast.  I enjoyed that book and so was pleased to find another book by this author, for free download on Kindle late last year.  This book was titled Love Before Midnight.

Now I’m always up for a western romance – they are often entertaining and enjoyable.  This book met those expectations also.  Anora Garrity was a character it was easy to gain an interest in.  As she finds herself thrown out of home, the reader is quickly encouraged to like Maverick Cole who takes her in on a freezing, snowy night.

Maverick is grudging at first to help Anora.  This is especially so because her husband tried to steal one of his horses.  But Maverick finds in the short time that Anora stays with him that he develops an unexpected fondness for her.  He’s protective and puts this down to the abusive home that she has left.

Yet in time, he realises it’s more than that.  Even when her husband brings a devastating blow to Maverick’s plan to build up good horse stock with his stallion. Just when Maverick is ready to admit his feelings for the young woman, Anora is gone from his life.

Fast forward a year and readers get to explore with Anora and Maverick.  The two consider if the feelings they once felt are still there.  And if so, whether they should act on them.  Love Before Midnight was a short, enjoyable read with a small focus on horses that was appreciated.

Mounted Police from Racing OTTB

March 20, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I often share posts or images for work on our Facebook page.  These will come from various equine organisations across the state, nation or even world wide.  One recent video from Racing.com caught my attention.  It was looking at the life of an off the track thoroughbred that has moved into the role of a mounted police horse.  How wonderful!  Hence this post, mounted police from racing OTTB.

You can watch the video below:

There are so many different facets to the equine industry. And that’s why I love writing about them and have put this blog together. You will never run out of options when it comes to a career with horses.

I used to work as a strapper at Wangaratta Racetrack. Although this feels like it was many moons ago, I am sure the situation is still the same today. The trainer I worked for had a longer list of buyers wanting OTTBs than he had horses to cater to them! Still, it’s wonderful to see that the Mounted Police in Victoria, Australia are also interested in taking on ex-racehorses.

I must admit that the Thoroughbred is my favourite breed of horse. This is generally due to their versatility. They can do pretty much anything. The above story shows that once a horse has finished a particular ‘career’, that doesn’t mean its use has ended. The same could be said for equine workers. Don’t forget, there are many, many avenues in the equine industry that can be explored for work.
