Forest Rescue by Mica Ford

October 8, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In the next book in the Forest Advetures series, Forest Rescue explores eldest daughter, Niki’s character a little more. Although the pre-teen is coming across as introverted and moody, Aunt Anna and Grandma are sure something more is going on. When it becomes apparent what has happened, Grandma quickly concludes that it is the ponies that will come to Niki’s rescue. Forest Rescue is a great follow on from Forest Summer.

As Niki’s younger sisters head back home in time for school, a drastic change is made in Niki’s life. She stays with her grandparents and aunt, not eager to return home to deal with some nasty girls at school. And yet, the idea of being away from her parents – and sisters – for so long has her a little intimidated.

In time it is the patience of her grandmother and aunt as well as the healing power of the New Forest Ponies that brings Niki out of her shell. She slowly heals and finds her sense of self worth and confidence again.

In time Niki establishes new friendships that are built on mutual interests. Her riding skills improve and she is rapt to be allowed out riding with her newfound friends. On a riding trip out alone Niki is dismayed to find some older males lighting a fire in the hot summer months when it is not allowed in the forest. A nice ride by herself soon turns into a dangerous adventure that Niki isn’t sure she is ready for.

Forest Rescue is a great exploration of building up confidence again after bullying. It explores family members being able to read the signs of a deeper issue than just growth pains. It also looks into the benefit of horses and how they can instill confidence in any individual.

Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia

October 3, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I love discovering setups for particular facets of the equine industry. This one specifically relates to bloodstock agents within Australia. It is known as the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia Limited or the FBAA. Their Twitter tagline is:

“Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia was formed to maintain, improve & develop the standards, status & services of Bloodstock Agents throughout Australia”

On their site they detail the industry code of conduct, which is also downloadable as a pdf file.

Resources are provided in the form of links to the principal racing authorities in each state of Australia, industry bodies relating to racing, horses and breeding as well as race clubs. These are also for each state of Australia.

It was back in 1988 that the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia Limited was formed. This was created to “improve and develop standards, status and services of Bloodstock Agents throughout Australia…” It was also created to put across and promote the views of the members of the FBAA.

The 27 accredited members can:

  • provide aid in selling and purchasing bloodstock
  • help with valuations of bloodstock
  • consult and manage
  • provide matings advice
  • help with insurance, shipping and other matters relating to bloodstock

This setup is a great point of contact for people who need advice relating to thoroughbred racing and breeding setups. If you want to become a member of the FBAA, you need to have at least 5 years industry involvement and 2 years operating a bloodstock agency. If this is a field you’re in or plan to be a part of in the future, be sure to make a note of the FBAA.

“When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes.” ― William Shakespeare

Dun Lady’s Jess by Duranna Jorgan

October 1, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently wrote a post about horse fantasy novels over at my author site. A comment from another author recommended and added Dun Lady’s Jess by Duranna Jorgan to this list of books. I had downloaded this already when it was free on Kindle and had started it, but not really gotten into it. And so I decided to give it another go – I’m glad that I did!

Dun Lady’s Jess is a unique tale of two worlds. Two worlds that are vastly different and yet have many similarities – like horses and humans and the bond between the two. Carey lives in a world where he consistently risks his life, travelling messages on his trusty horses from one wizard to another source. He is often the target of attack from others keen to steal whatever he is carrying. On one such trip he has an incredible spell that he needs to keep protected. Choosing to ride his trusty dun mare, Dun Lady’s Jess, Carey sets out. He has a second spell that he can use if he is in danger of being caught – and the first spell being procured by the wrong hands.

When this happens, his trusty dun mare finds herself in another world and another form. Suddenly Jess has to learn a new language, decipher new emotions and find her beloved Carey.

As things seem to settle for Jess amongst a newfound group of friends, she finds her world is once again turned upside down with Carey. Suddenly her new friends find themselves having to learn about Carey and Dun Lady’s Jess’ world as well as how to get home.

Dun Lady’s Jess is a unique read full of adventure as well as a small amount of romance. The story is bound to capture any reader’s imagination and has a fitting ending.

The Association of Official Racing Chemists

September 26, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you have a love for the racing industry and an interest in pharmaceuticals, then you may be interested to learn about the AORC.  This is the Association of Official Racing Chemists. Back in 1911 in Austria, racing authorities were questioning if some horses were competing under the influence of drugs. This then led to the engagement of a Viennese chemist named Dr. Frankel.  This was to determine a method of detection to ascertain if this was so. These procedures then went on a year later to be utilised in France and England.

I know in Australia that horses are tested for drugs randomly at racetracks. It was in 1941 that several racing chemists came together to discuss issues collaboratively. In 1947, this group had expanded and then officially became known as the Association of Official Racing Chemists.

As it states on their site:

“The membership of the AORC consists of individuals, not laboratories, and is limited to those concerned with the detection of drugs in racing animals. The scope of each operation is defined by the drug control measures of the rules of racing in each jurisdiction served. From the inception of the AORC, its membership has been international. As the AORC is a member of the ARCI (Association of Racing Commissioners International), annual meetings are held in conjunction with other industry segments alternating every other year to an international venue.”

The Association of Official Racing Chemists

There are now more than 100 members covering 26 countries around the world. They work to bring quality drug testing to the horse racing industry.

“Drug testing has emerged from its primitive beginnings to become a very precise and sensitive science.”

This association may be of interest to you.  Especially if you have a particular interest for the science of pharmaceuticals and want to help keep racing a sport with integrity!
