Profile On: Chelsie Huseman, Equine Extension Specialist

May 18, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently became aware of the horse related career, the equine extension specialist.  Feeling a little in the dark about this, I contacted one at a university in Texas and asked if she’d be willing to answer some questions about her role.  Below are Chelsie’s responses.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
All of my job is related to horses and people.  With horses, however, I participate in hands-on horse work 2-3 times/week.  My other obligations involve interacting with people, traveling and work in the office.

What is it exactly that you do?
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is a unique education agency with a statewide network of professional educators, trained volunteers and county offices. The Extension Horse Program addresses priorities and needs identified at a local level by county horse program committees.  Specialists, Extension Agents and industry professionals work together to address issues and opportunities of horse production, ownership and use through development of educational resource materials and activities.

The Extension horse specialists within the Department of Animal Science serve more than 950,000 Texas horse industry participants and more than 289,000 Texas horse owners.  The Extension horse specialists provide research-based best management practices as related to nutrition, breeding, management, care and use.  This is through educational programs and workshops.

Information developed by the Extension equine group is available to all clientele.  This includes individual horse owners, goods and service providers, and also industry professionals.  Extension remains a leader in helping horse owners become better organized through assistance and leadership in formation of associations and groups.

In addition, the horse specialists are committed to supporting the Texas 4-H, Extension’s primary youth program.  This is through support of educational and competitive activities that foster decision making, problem solving and other important life skills.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
Horse Program Specialists need a masters degree in a related field of study, while Horse Specialists need a PhD. Diversified horse experience is a plus to be a successful candidate in this area of work.  This can include horse showing, judging, management, and also ownership.

Favourite horse memory?
I have many fond memories of all the mistakes I made as a kid trying to learn about horses on my own growing up. For instance, when I saddled my horse for the first time because my Dad wasn’t available.  That saddle went flying off the side of the horse with me in it because I didn’t tighten the cinch properly. It was frustrating at times not having formal training as a kid.  But I look back on it now and feel truly lucky to have learned so many things the hard way. It makes me a better educator today.

Future goals?
Future goals involve continuing to develop equine international opportunities to disperse equine education and provide cultural experiences for Texas A&M undergraduate students. Also, increasing our online following by continuing to utilize our Facebook page Texas Horse to disperse equine education and develop our YouTube channel Texas Horse Help.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
I never live the same day twice. The world of equine education is constantly evolving and I have to keep up! Plus it is extremely gratifying and fulfilling to see youth and adults develop their knowledge and passion for the horse.

Knowing she should stock up and stay with her horses, Holly heads into town to get some supplies.  The mayhem at the local store surprises her.  She’s not so sure that the impending weather is going to be all it is proclaimed to be.  But that doesn’t stop the locals from buying as many supplies as they can.

Returning to Happy Hollow Stables, Holly is surprised to find her trusty employee McKenzie dealing with a colicky horse.  Holly is quick to call local vet – and her boyfriend – Dustin to come and check the gelding out.  With the cold weather, the poor horse has become impacted due to not drinking enough.

What started out as a typical day in the barn soon turns into a sleepover as the weather makes it impossible to go anywhere.  Holly had forgotten about her planned farrier visit and finds herself the host to McKenzie, the vet Dustin and local farrier Mike.  In time this increases to local journalist Derek Pitts. And the pleasant delivery man, Henry.

Holly battles to deal with the different personalities suddenly forced to stay in her barn.  Whilst keeping an eye on the horses and making sure everyone is warm enough in the freezing weather, she is devastated to find Henry’s body outside his truck.  At first this seems like an accidental death.  But as Holly analyses the situation, she finds herself once again involved in the middle of a whodunit.

Silence of Snowfall for such a short mystery features some great horsey moments and again builds on the relationship of Holly and Dustin.  The conclusion is quick but fitting.

Wild About Hooves for the Farrier in You

May 9, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently found out about the Wild About Hooves website and their apt focus on hoof care.  This website focuses on a few different areas that are of benefit to farriers and horse owners alike.  They look at a qualification in hoof care, education about hoof care, farriery tools and also horse related adventures.

For those who want to get a qualification, they can look at a certificate course in equine hoof care.  This is a 12 month course that is “designed to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to work within the equine industry.”  Adding to the educational area of hoof care, Wild About Hooves detail trimming workshops, seminars and wild horse study tours.

If you’re looking for tools to help you in the farriery trade, then they have a shop to buy such products.  Whether it be a hoof knife, hoof stand or general trimming tools they have all these.

Seeing horses in the wild behaving as they naturally would allows for many to better understand their nutritional and care needs – including hoof care.  Wild About Hooves also provide horse adventures in Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory of Australia.

Perhaps you want to better educate yourself as a horse owner with regards to hoof care.  Or maybe you want to cut your farrier bill by doing the work yourself.  Or maybe you have a passion for learning more about the equine hoof.  Either way, you can find out about all of these aspects of hoof care at the Wild About Hooves website.

“Fascination with horses predated every other single thing I knew. Before I was a mother, before I was a writer, before I knew the facts of life, before I was a schoolgirl, before I learned to read, I wanted a horse.” ― Jane Smiley

Selah’s Painted Dream by Susan Count

May 7, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The third book in the Dream Horse Adventures series is Selah’s Painted Dream.  I was given a copy of this book to review in anticipation of its release date – today, May 7!  Although I haven’t read the first two books in this series, it was easy to get caught up in thirteen year old Selah’s world.  The teen is devastated to learn some news that will turn her world upside down: the family is moving.

Selah's Painted Dream by Susan Count | Equus Education

As a thirteen year old who has her dream horse, Selah cannot think of anything better in life.  Her grandfather lives nearby on a farm, and Selah is able to keep Dream there.  But with the news that her father needs to relocate for work, it looks like she’ll only get to visit her horse on weekends – if that.

Selah is shocked and devastated that she will be ripped from the town she loves, away from the horse she loves and also from the friends that she has at school.  Life couldn’t get worse for the teen, or so it seems.

Selah has an incredible bond with her mare Dream and a recent episode on a television show quickly results in stardom for the pair.  Unfortunately for Selah, it also results in jealousy for the two girls she considered her friends at school.  She cannot fathom how to get through to her best friend Vanessa.  Selah finds herself struggling to be nice when Vanessa is anything but.

Selah’s Painted Dream is a story full of adventure.  As the thirteen year old feels her world is falling down around her, she devises a plan to get her grandpa on side – and to move in with him at the farm.  But many things she tries seem to backfire.  And all this, in amongst pulling a man from a crashed plane with her beloved horse, trying to help rescue a lost four year old girl and saving a neighbour’s stray sheep and lambs!

Selah battles through a constant haze of thinking that no one cares what she wants.  She struggles to be gracious and to look to God for answers.  Most of the advice she is given is to trust in God for the best outcome, but how can she when it seems He’s not answering her prayers?

Her grandfather isn’t interested in her desire to live with him; he has other things on his mind.  Her parents say they can’t change the situation and insist that she needs to accept it for what it is.  Her friends don’t care that she’s leaving – they seem relieved.  Selah questions just how things could get any worse – and then her grandfather drops a bombshell on her.  Selah’s Painted Dream is an interesting and entertaining read that is full of horses and horse facts.  The way it finishes is a delight and also shows a lot of growth in the young teen.
