Equi Crown Compression Bandages

May 4, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Another interesting resource or horse invention that I have recently come across through work is compression bandages for horses. Equi Crown had an advert in an online horse magazine that I was reading. And I got to thinking, what an interesting idea!

Have you ever had a horse that you’ve brought in out of a field/paddock into a stable and the following morning you find its legs filled with fluid? I first experienced this just outside of my Diploma when I was working at a yearling preparation. The manager was concerned that there was something wrong with the horses and after ruling out any lameness concerns, he concluded that perhaps a high protein diet was the issue.

If you’re familiar with the lymphatic system in the horse, you will know that this is a pump that deals with circulation of fluids within the equine system. This pump functions via movement. If the horse is not moving, then fluid will accumulate in the lymph nodes and cause visible swelling.

I would guess now in hindsight this was the issue with the yearlings. They’d come out of a large paddock where they were able to consistently move and were transported to a 12 foot x 12 foot stall for a sale preparation – their movement was greatly restricted!

Perhaps this is where compression bandages can work for horses. If a horse is to be stabled for illness, competition, sale preparation or something else, then these bandages could work to keep swelling down. Like people wear on a long plane flight, why would this not also work for horses? A unique idea! Curious? Be sure to head along and check out the Equi Crown website.

Purpose Games and Horses

May 2, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

As I am reviewing content for students to undertake in their study this year at work, I am also discovering many new resources! Different horse websites; free horse related downloads; even different horse careers that I hadn’t heard of! I’m in heaven 🙂 A recent discovery was purpose games and horses.

If you head along to the Purpose Games website and do a search on horses, you’ll find some pretty incredible horse related games! And they’re free! What I love about these is that they’re also educational.

Want to learn about the skeletal structure of the horse? Well with purpose games and horses as your focus term, you can find such an activity! Check it out at Horse Skeletal Anatomy. You’re shown the skeleton of the horse and asked to identify different skeletal structures (e.g. atlas, axis, scapular, lumbar vertebrae, etc.).

As you determine where you think the bones are, you click on its associated dot point to identify it. If you’re right, it turns green. If not, it turns another colour, but you can keep guessing! You get timed to see how long it takes you to identify them all and you’re given a score. If you sign up for a (free) account with purpose games, then you can even rate the game and be listed on the scoreboard – if you’re good enough!

These horse games are fun, but they’re also educational. Why not check them out? They can get addictive, so be sure you have some time to spare! And if you’re like me, maybe you’d like to look into how you can set up your own game for others to learn from and also enjoy. I’m sure I’ll be sharing a future post about a horse related game/resource that I have created at Purpose Games ;).

Southern Wind by Brandy L Cunningham

April 30, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Emmy Everhart is a unique soul.  She is physically beautiful but shies away from any male interest.  Her heart and soul is devoted to the equine species.  She spends her life looking after her horses and competing.  It is her dedication to horse riding that has allowed Emmy to rise from a struggling stable hand to a Grand Prix winner in Southern Wind.

Southern Wind by Brandy L Cunningham | Equus Education

Aside from her best friend Pam, Emmy feels she can only rely on horses.  If ever they are considered untrustworthy, she knows it is because of something a human has done to them.  They may be misunderstood, but they’re not purposefully mean.  Emmy cannot say the same for people.

With a family that abandoned her when she needed them the most and a coldness towards men, Emmy isn’t sure what to do when she meets Irishman Westly Galway.  The journalist isn’t what she expects and she is amazed to find herself drawn to him physically.

In spite of her surprise at these unexpected feelings, Emmy finds it easy to distance herself from the man.  And in time a chance encounter with him confirms for the red head that all men are only after one thing.

Thousands of miles and even years don’t take away the unexpected attraction that Emmy felt for Westly.  When he returns to America in search of a job – at her equestrian facility – she is floored.  Putting him to the test, she is amazed to find that the man is more than capable around horses – and in the saddle.  The fact that this endears him to her even more, unsettles the young woman.

Southern Wind features horses heavily, is a beautiful romance and touches on the sensitive topic of abuse and how it affects the individual.  The characters are endearing, perhaps because of their flaws that they try to overcome.  This is an incredibly entertaining tale; highly recommended.

The Equine Extension Specialist

April 27, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I was looking at a video resource for a unit in one of our horse courses.  I love getting to find so many different online resources and careers as I make sure the content is current and formatted for upcoming students!  Have I mentioned I love my job? 🙂  One of the videos I viewed listed the man’s name and underneath it equine extension specialist.  And I asked myself; just what is an equine extension specialist?

Good ol’ Google!  A search online revealed an interesting article that quoted:

“If you grew up in 4-H or live near a land-grant university, you may be familiar with equine extension specialists…  Those people who seem to have the unique ability to help you with any equine issue you may have…  Whether it’s pasture management, feeding issues or even facility construction. If you want to be a go-to person in the equine industry, consider a career in equine extension.”

How interesting!  I have many interests in the equine industry and am quite passionate about the areas of education, careers, horse breeding physiology and sustainable horse management.  I love sharing my knowledge – and adding to it!  And yet, I had no idea there was such a horse career as an equine extension specialist!

It seems this field/career is heavily linked in the education and science worlds.  Why not take a look at some links?

“He’s of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger… he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts.” ― William Shakespeare

Profile On: Kari Fulmek, Equine Connection

April 25, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently Equus Education looked at the role of Equine Connection in qualifying equine assisted learning facilitators.  Kari Fulmek has kindly answered some questions about her profession relating to this.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
60 hours minimum!

Profile On: Kari Fulmek, Equine Connection
Profile On: Kari Fulmek, Equine Connection

What is it exactly that you do?
I am a Master Instructor for the Equine Assisted Learning Certification that we offer at Equine Connection – The Academy of Equine Assisted Learning. We train people to bring their dreams of working with horses and people into their reality through our course.

We are a Global Equine Assisted Learning Business Training™ (EABT™) company that works together to find success around the world.  This is through helping people to be empowered and helping them to change their lives while working with the horse.  There are currently two campuses in Calgary, Ab Canada and Sydney, NSW Australia as well as numerous travelling schools throughout the world. We have certified people from Bosnia, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and of course Canada.

The other side of our business is facilitating clients in our objectively driven courses. We offer curriculum courses to youth and women at risk as well as offer women workshops and team building workshops. The horse’s jobs are speaking to the clients through their bodies to help bring about the changes that the clients need to make. Exercises are developed to encourage self-confidence through validated, hands-on experiences.

Equine Assisted Learning through the Equine Connection is NOT equine therapy. We do not require a clinical professional with us to do these exercises and programs given to you in your horse course. Equine Assisted Learning works, because the teachers are the horses! We are the facilitators who help our clients to take their teaching back to their everyday lives.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Absolutely! Facilitators who train with us can get a return on investment immediately through business write-offs alone! Plus, depending on how quickly facilitators start up, they can earn a decent living while living their dream! We always tell people that they won’t be a millionaire running these courses because let’s face it, horses are expensive, but you can make a comfortable living and be rich in life!

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
The first step is getting certified! Through the course, we also train you on marketing, how to set up your business, as well as providing you 3 years of set up and work in your business pack! We are setting people up for success!

Favourite horse memory?
I always wanted a horse as a child – desperately – but we were very poor growing up. I remember my beautiful mom giving me a horse book instead.  And at that moment I began my journey with horses. It was just a little book, 25 cents from a garage sale, but it was what my mom could do, and her way of giving me a horse. That moment will forever reside in my heart.

Future goals?
To help people understand their horses differently and helping them to find their purpose. Truly, it is making an impact on the world through spreading Equine Assisted Learning and all that it can do to help others throughout the globe.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
It’s real. We get to live in the moment – just like our horses.
