Grows that Way by Susan Ketchen

April 23, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The third book in the tales of Sylvia and her grey pony Brooklyn is just as enjoyable as the others in the series.  Although I read these a little out of order, I have to say that I enjoyed them all immensely!  Ketchen writes with great sense of humour, causing Syliva’s character to be endearing, amusing and downright honest all at the same time.  In Grows that Way, fourteen year old Sylvia is still adjusting to having been diagnosed with Turner Syndrome.  The short teen who is missing a chromosome finds life is still an interesting journey.

She loves having her grey pony Brooklyn to dote on and learn with.  As her riding progresses, she is rapt to be able to work on jumping.  Though this does come about through a little manipulation of her confidant and instructor, Kansas.  Sylvia is amazed to find Kansas wrapped up in the Irish farrier Declan but finds in time that the horseman has his own merits as a riding instructor.

Whilst out on a secret trail ride with Brooklyn, Syvlia comes across an unexpected animal in the woods.  The pair are surprised – and fearful.  Sylvia is keen to discuss things, but with who?  She wasn’t supposed to be out riding by herself.  In time she concludes Logan Losino is her safest bet.  This leads her on an incredible journey she hadn’t expected.

As Sylvia comes to terms with the fact that Logan may actually like her, she finds herself unexpectedly getting to know his brother Franco, too.  Sylvia is devastated that her cousin Taylor is dating the big, hairy bully and as unusual events unfold, she finds herself struggling to tell Taylor the truth about her boyfriend.

Grows that Way has the usual sense of humour I have come to expect in this series and Sylvia’s journey plays out in a creative and enlightening way.  Highly recommended.

EquiMind – Online Equestrian Competitions and Training

April 20, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The internet truly makes many things possible that you may not have thought!  I am rapt to be making money through horse books that I have created, horse courses and even horse educational products.  And of course I get to read many horse books for free in exchange for a review on this site!  Today I came across an online initiative I would never have dreamt up!  Online equestrian competitions over at EquiMind.

EquiMind – Online Equestrian Competitions and Training | Equus Education
EquiMind – Online Equestrian Competitions and Training | Equus Education

You can enter these real horse competitions at any time and ride on any suitable surface.  You don’t need to transport your horse from where it is, don’t have petrol costs and are not restricted by time or having to pay membership fees.  So how does it work?

You choose to enter into advertised classes on the EquiMind website.  You then use your phone to record yourself riding and upload the video from your phone or computer.  The videos are then professionally judged and winners determined.

As far as I can see, you pay an entry fee and you receive real rosettes for placings – incredible!  You can enter into any class from anywhere around the world, as long as you have an internet connection.  And of course, you need to be able to film yourself riding for the online class.  As it says on the website:

“There are many reasons to join EquiMind. As a member, you become a part of the growing community of riders who prefer to compete online instead of having to travel with their horses all the time. We are looking especially after handicapped riders, visually impaired horses and very little riders who have no opportunity to travel to equestrian events. EquiMind online competitions are also an ideal opportunity to prepare for other major championships.”

What a unique concept!  You can even become a bronze, silver or gold member at a minimal monthly fee.  This entitles you to show entry discounts, training video discounts and access to the online Facebook group amongst other things.  You can pay for 1, 3 or 6 month payments; take a look at the bronze membership details.  Real horse competitions submitted and judged online; now I’ve seen everything.

Horse Charmer by Angelia Almos

April 16, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you enjoy a story that focuses on horses, has adventure, romance, royalty and a touch of fantasy then you’ll love Horse Charmer.  Princess Cassia is a teenager who spends much of her time avoiding her royal duties and hiding with her beloved horses.  She feels a lot more comfortable with them anyway.  She has a gift when it comes to working with them and finds herself drawn to the stables.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that horse wrangler Luki has a charm of his own, too.

Cassia finds her world suddenly changes at sixteen years of age with some unexpected news.  Finding herself expected to fulfil royal duty and engage in politics at such a young age has her mentally rebelling what is expected of her from society.  And yet, as much as she protests the idea of what she knows she must do, Cassia finds herself whisked toward a journey that is far from appealing.

As Cassia struggles to talk herself into fulfilling royal obligations, doubts assail her.  A dream from her deceased father convinces her that action needs to be taken – but what?  In a desperate act Cassia finds herself on an adventure she could never have foreseen.

With her trusty new mare Kali, Cassia works to solve the mystery of her father’s death whilst also determining the best course of action for her kingdom – and herself.  As she grows into a young woman, Cassia struggles to understand her feelings toward Luki.  This is especially difficult as the young man charged to be her servant seems to reciprocate her interest.

Horse Charmer is a delightful mixture of horse information, fantasy, adventure and romance.  The story moves along at a good pace.  Even though it ends well, it will leave you wanting to know more of Cassia and Luki’s story.

MB Equine Services

April 13, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

There are so many different facets to the equine industry – I love this!  It’s wonderful also to see when people combine their particular knowledge and passions into a viable business.  Consider the likes of MB Equine Services.

Their website says an integrated approach to horse’s health and performance.  There are many things that you can make a living from with horses.  When you’re able to combine 2 or 3 things, then you increase your chances to make income and sustain a viable business.

MB Equine Services looks at 3 distinct areas:

  • Equine nutrition consultancy: “MB Equine Nutrition Consultancy assists the equine industry and horse owners with professional and practical information about horse nutrition. We provide high-quality consultation services for horse owners, breeders, equestrian sport stables, trainers and feed/supplement companies.”
  • Property and pasture: here they look at sustainable horse keeping and equine permaculture. Amongst their services in this particular area, they offer consultancy on equine pasture management, consultancy and design in the area of regenerative horse properties as well as grazing planning, forage enrichment and keyline design.  Cool!
  • Dressage training and coaching: there is no doubt that many horse owners want to improve as horse riders. Mariette focuses on her passion of classical riding principles and balanced riding techniques alongside evidence-based coaching to help riders improve and achieve riding goals.

You may look at these three areas relating to horses and think that they’re vastly different.  And yet, if you have passion and knowledge in these areas, what is to stop you from offering services in all of them?  Nothing!

You can combine your equine passion to create a flourishing horse business that is unique from anyone else’s.  Think about what you love to do and know and how this can generate income.  For me the passions of breeding thoroughbreds, writing and website design allow me to generate income.  This is from fictional horse books, teaching horse studies at TAFE and developing online resources.  What could your three be?
