The Frugal Horsewoman

October 12, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Owning and caring for horses is a costly business. In light of this, I love that I’ve recently discovered a website titled the Frugal Horsewoman. It focuses on horse keeping, but doing so on a budget. What a great idea!  You can always benefit from saving money in the area of owning horses.

Some aspects of the site that may interest you focus on articles that detail how to save money (and still own horses!). There are also some do it yourself recipes and details on how to make some horse supplies. Often we can make things at a fraction of the cost of which we would buy them! I love it.

Recent posts have covered making your own fly spray for horses and how to cut down on the cost of feeding horses. A bonus of Crystalyn’s site is that she also has regular freebies and giveaways. In fact, as you explore the site you’ll see there are pages dedicated specifically to freebies, and contests & giveaways. What’s not to like?

Things can get really expensive in today’s society, but we shouldn’t have to give up owning and working with the animal we love. What we can do to be proactive in this area is learn how to cut down on costs. It seems that this website focuses on this specific topic!

Be sure to check out the Frugal Horsewoman website. I’m sure there are many articles of worth that you can check out and also put into action.  And of course there are freebies and giveaways to benefit from! As you save money on your horse/s, you can put it into savings or make use of it elsewhere – win/win!

Equine Psychotherapy Institute

October 5, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry
Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry

If you have an interest in equine psychotherapy, then you may be interested to know about the Equine Psychotherapy Institute.  For those interested in studying equine assisted psychotherapy training there are two options:

  1. Students who are already Registered Psychotherapists, Counsellors or Mental Health Practitioners such as Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Mental Health Social Workers and Mental Health Nurses, who are ‘in relationship with horses’ (whether a beginner or very experienced horse-people), and are wanting to offer Equine Assisted Therapy or Psychotherapy services. This group has Mental Health Qualifications and Registrations.
  2. Students who are passionate horse-people, may have qualification in teaching, coaching or management, have a keen interest in helping others grow and change, and are wanting to learn more about powerful processes and experiential learning with horses. This group do not have Mental Health Registration.

You can enroll into a course to become qualified via the equine psychotherapy institute website.  You can also search for qualified practitioners around Australia.

It’s great to see that training and qualifications are offered to both professionals in the mental health field and those who have skills with horses.  The area of psychotherapy with horses needs both kinds of individuals.  If you are a person who fits both of these categories, then even better!

Horses are wonderfully honest.  Horses are a great tool to help people.  This is in spite of their intimidating size.  They can help emotionally and physically and to learn skills, like team work.  Psychotherapy with horses is an interesting health area that is developing at a great speed.  It’s wonderful to find places that offer training and qualifications for those interested.

International Centre for Equine Excellence

September 16, 2016 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

A previous colleague of mine is now involved in an exciting initiative called the International Centre for Equine Excellence.  According to their website:

ICEE is a professional company whose mission is to provide the horse community in Korea and South East Asia with high level consultation services, educational training workshops, accredited training and international qualifications in all things equine.

Horses – particularly in the racing industry – are available to people worldwide.  If you learn skills in one country and are able to gain a qualification, then this can set you up for international travel and work.

Being able to visit other countries and use horse related skills can put you in a position to gain more skills, contacts and even better rates of pay and horse related positions.  It’s great to see this initiative that has been set up for horse enthusiasts in Korea and South East Asia.  I’m sure the International Centre for Equine Excellence will go a long way to help people local to Korea and South East Asia gain skills, knowledge and qualifications that will put them in good stead all around the world.

  • Equine sports massage therapy
  • Equine photonic therapy
  • Equine musculoskeletal therapy
  • Certificate II in racing

There are also workshops that cover a myriad of topics.  These include working safely with horses, stable duties, coaching, health and welfare, nutrition and managing a horse business.  Be sure to check out the ICEE website for further details and contact information.

Horse Anthelmintics, Education and Sales

August 10, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Although the worming of horses is something that I’ve done regularly, I hadn’t considered horse anthelmintics for Equus Education. Indeed, it is something I read about regularly, too! Yet it has taken me awhile to consider it for a post here.

Anthelmintics are products that are often used by horse owners. Given regularly when needed, they can be very effective in lowering worm count levels in horses. These products are often made up of one of six main ingredients:

  • pyrantel
  • moxidectin
  • praziquantel
  • febendazole
  • ivermectin
  • mebendazole

I have no doubt that most people who work in the field of creating these wormers, selling them and educating others about their use, have a background in science. Perhaps it’s an Equine Science Degree or an Animal Science Degree in which they’re able to focus on horse health and equine parasitology.

Many People use Horse Anthelmintics
Many People use Horse Anthelmintics

For those who are familiar with using horse anthelmintics, they may be aware that owners used to be encouraged to worm every 12 weeks – and perhaps to change the active ingredient once a year.

Using Horse Anthelmintics

The current practice encouraged is to only use when needed. How do we know when a horse needs to be wormed? Faecal Worm Egg Counts can be carried out to determine the worm burden within a particular animal. Anything above 200 is considered reasonable enough to treat the horse. If figures are below this, then it is advised not to worm the horse. This is to avoid using a paste that is costing money when it isn’t needed.

Knowing this information – and how to use it effectively – can come about by being educated. This is possible through people studying worms in horses and anthelmintic products. There are people within the horse industry who do exactly this. They study and they teach others about how to use worming products efficiently and effectively. If this area of horse care appeals to you, perhaps such a job role would also be appealing.
