Writing Equine Channels

October 19, 2012 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

So a few of you may know that I write horse based articles over at Suite101.com.  Suite is currently going through some changes and are to shortly launch a new writing system/model.

Know horses? Why not consider ‘writing them’!

I’m still getting my head around what these changes will look like but they’re opening up the opportunity for writers/contributors to run or be in charge of different channels (topics).

The idea is that you set up a channel and manage it, contributing informative articles to this channel and encourage others to write for it if this is an area that they’re passionate about and knowledgeable of.

So whilst working out this new system once it’s in publish mode, I’m keen to focus a channel on horse breeding.  For those of you who are passionate about horses and writing and like the idea of earning a little for it, consider whether you’ve the time and energy to invest in writing for a site like Suite101.

I won’t say that at this point I’ve earnt a lot from writing equine articles since having started in late 2009.

What I will say is that I have been consistently receiving a small sum each month and even when I stopped writing new articles when I acquired my head injury, I was still earning from previously posted articles.  As someone who’s a huge fan of building residual income, this is very appealing to me!

So perhaps now’s the time to prompt those interested, to thinking about putting into action a plan to write horses, and earn from writing horses.  You might like to consider the idea of contributing to the horse breeding channel I set up or create one of your own!  When it comes to writing horses, the only limit is your imagination.  You could write about:

  • nutrition
  • competitions
  • products
  • equine clothing
  • the list goes on

“That hoss wasn’t built to tread the earth, He took natural to the air, And every time he went aloft, He tried to leave me there.” – Tribute to an Unmanageable Horse

The Power of We

October 15, 2012 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Today is Blog Action Day, the topic being the Power of We.  I love working with horses, learning about them and encouraging others who want to do the same.  Sometimes I like to think that it’s my drive that helps me in these areas, but it wouldn’t be possible at all without the help of so many others.

Who has Helped Your Equine Learning? Leave a comment!

Consider your interest in horses and the things you’ve learnt about them – who has helped you? A few ideas:

  • horse riding instructors
  • farriers
  • equine education teachers
  • university and TAFE teachers
  • pony club lecturers
  • parents, friends and other family
  • authors
  • every horse you interact with

This is far from an exhaustive list!  Feel free to leave a comment about others that have or are continuing to help you in your endeavour to become a better informed horse person.  It is up to you to improve as a horse person.  However, it’s the power of we that helps you to learn so much about horses!

If you’re considering a career with horses but don’t know where to start, check out Vocation 100 – on here I have listed in excess of 100 equine related jobs.  Who knows, maybe one of these is worth pursuing? 🙂

The Unwanted Horse Coalition

October 11, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So this website I was completely ignorant to up until a few minutes ago.  I use Google Reader to subscribe to many horse related blogs and this link we shared on one of the hundreds I read through.

It caught my attention specifically because of an initiative they’re running called ‘Operation Gelding‘. I think often problems arise with horses because of ignorance. I’ve seen this quite a few times since pursuing a career with Thoroughbreds, particularly in breeding.

I believe some people choose to breed because they have a colt/stallion or a mare and suddenly they think, “hey, I could get a foal!” Now I think breeding horses is a wonderful thing, if owners are informed and horses are bred for a purpose.  Breeding just because it can be done is not a good reason.

The Unwanted Horse Coalition are running this current initiative to encourage people to geld stallions.  Perhaps some people shy away from this because of the cost, but it is worth considering why a colt or stallion should be gelded.

  • ask
  • read
  • research
  • undertake training

There are many, many resources available today to improve the skills and knowledge of horse enthusiasts. If you know of anyone that could benefit from knowing about the Unwanted Horse Coalition or Operation Gelding, share it with them! 🙂

Blog Action Day 2012: The Power of We

October 9, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

On October 15, it’s Blog Action Day!  This is an event that I try to take part in on an annual basis.  The topic this year is The Power of We.

Now I always try to relate the given topic or theme to horses.  And this one got me thinking about people and horses and a bit comes to mind!

Look out for my post on October 15.  If you write a blog, consider partaking in Blog Action Day – don’t forget to sign up!  The idea of Blog Action Day is to raise global awareness and have people united, writing about the same topic on a given day.

‘Future Moves’

October 5, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So I had my first morning back at work Monday, two months after my accident.  It feels good to be back to work but I know it’s wise to take things slowly 🙂

We were having a staff morning tea and one of the staff members updated me on how things were going with her role in advertising Future Moves.

Recently GOTAFE has made a partnership of sorts with Charles Sturt University.  The idea is to encourage students that may undertake a TAFE course to further their education and knowledge by then pursuing a uni degree.

I love it!  Some believe that university isn’t for them due to a fear of the theory being too difficult, not being able to afford paying for a degree or any other multitude of reasons.

The idea of Future Moves is to raise awareness of what universities can offer students and break down any barriers about issues or misconceived ideas. This particular staff member I was talking with was excited about the fact that she would shortly be getting into the high schools (and primary schools) to talk about what opportunities further education can offer to the student.

Towards the end of the year people often consider their study options for the following year.  My advice?  Keep your eyes and ears open!  Ask people, send emails, talk on the phone, find out what you can about making your dream a reality.  And never discout the value of education!

“What the colt learns in youth he continues in old age.” – French Proverb
