Equine B&B

June 20, 2012 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

So I’ve been in Rodrigues with my hubby, visiting his family. We spent our wedding night in a bed and breakfast in the Dandenongs and once in Rodrigues, were blessed to stay a few nights at La Cabane, overlooking the sea with gorgeous sunset views.

My man and I are hoping to secure some land in the next couple of years to set up an agistment property. Thinking of B&Bs, I was daydreaming about the idea of an equine enthusiast’s ideal getaway. Why not somewhere you can:

  • board your horse (or use schooled horses on the property)
  • stay in a self contained cottage with copious horse books, magazines and DVDs
  • ride out on a trail
  • make use of an arena
  • have a riding lesson or two

Heaven, I think!

Travel with Your Horse? Why not!

April 17, 2012 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

So I’m playing at bit on LinkedIn at the moment and stumbled across a recommended contact to link with.  The website reference on her page caught my eye – Equine Hospitality.  Now I’m curious, what exactly is equine hospitality?  I’m picturing restaurants with horses serving people drinks… 🙂

So it turns out, there’s a website out there that focuses on holidays that you can take with your own horse – how very cool!  I’m sure it’s worth taking a look at yourself – when you have the time to daydream and look through amazing holidays that you could take with your beloved equine 🙂

Check out Equine Hospitality – the World’s Premier Equine Travel, Vacation and Accommodation Registry.

“As they run through arenas and open fields, past mountains and seas, moving like the wind toward heaven, we travel with them, if only in our hearts.”

Equine Dreaming in Malaysia

April 2, 2012 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

A work colleague of mine runs this awesome initiative in Australia called Equine Goals and Dreams.  She’s shortly heading off to Malaysia with a group of 8 riders from Australia to compete in the 2012 UTM International Horse Show in Johor, Malaysia.

Background of Equine Goals and Dreams:
“Equine Goals & Dreams is a non-profit company that was established in 2006 to help support young horse lovers who worked with or were seeking to find career opportunities in the equine industry. During this time the company was instrumental in establishing some historical milestones in the horse racing industry such as the inaugural 2006 Thoroughbred Employee of the Year awards, the Stable Employee Association and the successful RVL Rider Talent Identification camps. In 2009 EG&D set up 10 international job swap opportunities free of charge for stable workers studying national qualifications who wished to travel, earn and learn. The company has a large network of key contacts in many equine disciplines around the world which has led to an international equine industry skills passport being approved and is currently under development. Horses are an international language!”

For those of you in Australia with equine dreams, I’d suggest checking out this group on facebook!  For those interested in supporting people coming into the equine industry, perhaps you’d be willing to consider sponsorship roles?

“If I had a horse, I’d ride off in the sunset, where dreams, and shadows lie. To a life, where pain and sorrow don’t exist, and to where hopes, and dreams become reality.” – Lindsay Turcotte

Thoroughbred Stud Work in the Southern Hemisphere

June 10, 2011 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The breeding season is fast approaching down under and with it, jobs are popping up for those interested in working with stallions, broodmares and foals.

Some of the latest jobs advertised at EquusConnect (http://www.equusconnect.com.au/) include positions at the big studs Darley Australia and Coolmore Australia as well as Rich Hill in New Zealand.

Don’t forget, with the likes of Darley and Coolmore that are set up in varying countries around the world – the US, UK, Australia and Dubai, a foot in the door at one property may provide opportunity to visit the other properties and work your way around the world!

“All I need to know in life I learned from my horse – leather and chains can make anyone look studly.”

Parlez-vous francais?

March 29, 2009 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you answered yes to that question and are looking to study horses, specifically in the racing industry, then perhaps AFASEC may be for you.

While working at one of the riding school’s last year, I was chatting with the mother of one of our clients – a girl in her mid teens – who happened to be fluent in English and French on account of her dad living in France and mother in Australia.

Mad keen about horses, she was eyeing off a course at this horse related school in France.  Ever curious about different education facilities, I asked for the site of the school and took a look.  My French is very limited and I’m sure that if it weren’t, I’d be applying to study at such a place!  (A prerequisite is a thorough understanding of the French language).

AFASEC provides education and training in areas relating to driving/stable hand work, becoming a jockey on the flat or over jumps, head lad and assistant trainer.  They help you to establish a professional career within the industry and based on the photos on the site, seem to have wonderful facilities!

A couple of trotter stallions in France.

Students as young as 14 years of age are taken into their 5 establishments in France that provide intensive daily practical work as well as theoretical.

The school works in close cooperation with flat and harness trainers, giving the students permanent contact with professionals in the industry.

Perhaps a trip to Europe to study is suddenly looking appealing?  For those of you in school mad about horses, don’t underestimate the value of learning another language and then gaining experience with horses in another country.

“Once a horse is born, someone will be found to ride it.” – Hebrew Proverb
