Equine Thermography as a Career

November 4, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

There are many different tools out there now that we can use to help assess a horse’s health. Interested in the idea of infrared thermography for horses?  Then equine thermography may be of interest to you!

Equitherm, which focuses on treatment that is more than skin deep, was established in 2004. They are listed as the leading consultants in equine infrared thermography.  They also offer training courses related to equine thermography as well as a consulting service.

Equitherm boast over 700 students from around the world, including vets from the Federation Equestre International. They also provide a list of licensed equitherm thermographers in Australia, many places across the United Kingdom and in Italy. In this way, it is easy for people to locate someone near to them who may be able to provide the service for their horses.

Equine Thermography as a Career

Perhaps you are wondering if you can get qualified and turn this training into a career.  Well, there is a page that explores the application of equine thermography. Online training in the form of an industry standard qualification, allows students to study at their own pace.  Upon completion they will gain a “Vocational Qualification within the Equestrian Performance Industry.”

Could Equine Thermography help Your Horse?
Could Equine Thermography help Your Horse?

Whether horses are used recreationally or to bring in income, many horse owners will look into the best possible care for their equine friends. Consequently, equine thermography can be of benefit to horse owners and trainers. It can be used as “a monitoring tool for recovery of the injured dressage horse.”

The idea is that equine infrared thermography can provide evidence of an injury having healed.  And with this knowledge, the horse can return to work at an appropriate level. For those who are interested in this area, they can undertake a course to learn to read what the technology is showing in the horse’s system.

Horse Webinars – a Business Tool

November 2, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I was informed by an entrepreneur that I am signed up to that there is one particular aspect of their business that brings in the most money. You may have guessed it by the title of this post – webinars! So I got to thinking, why not horse webinars?

At the end of the day, a webinar is a great way to share a concept or information with a large group of people, all around the world. An event time is chosen and people follow a particular link to all come together at the same time to view a webinar. So how could webinars be of interest to those in the horse industry?

Horse Webinars - Could they be a Tool for your Business?
Horse Webinars – Could they be a Tool for your Business?

They could be held to help educate horse owners about a particular product or service. They could be run as an interactive part of a horse course for students. There is really no limit to what could be presented in the webinar, as long as it is able to be shown over an internet connection!

How could this benefit those wanting a horse business? Easily! The webinars can be made in advance – they need to be visual and have audio, but that’s it! You can provide a section at the end for questions and answers – people can send questions to you in advance or they can type them in as the webinar proceeds. You can offer your products at the end at a discounted rate for those who attended the webinar, encouraging sales that benefit you financially.

A recent webinar I attended by Melyssa Griffin focused on making use of Pinterest for your business. It was free and I got so much out of it! I’m sure this was the same for the 200+ other attendees. And at the end I have no doubt many people signed up for her paid, Pinfinite Growth course. So people benefited from free information and Melissa presumably benefited from sales.

And the best bit? Because the webinar was pre-recorded, she was able to run the exact same webinar at a different time.  And this could suit other potential paying customers. Thinking residual income, again? Think horse webinars!

Isla Picks Herself Up (Awelon Tyn 3) by Susy Stark

October 31, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Young Isla is a ten-year-old talented horse rider. She has a mother who is supportive of her horse riding and encourages her to compete and do as well as she possibly can. Isla has achieved much on her trusty mare Dusty but the level at which she is aiming to compete is too high for the older pony to consistently compete at. Because of this, her mother has purchased a piebald mount for her named Diablo.  He is the focus pony in Isla Picks Herself Up.

Diablo is an incredible jumper and he is taller, able to competently jump the heights Isla is competing in. He is also a very forward pony and a more challenging mount than Dusty. Isla finds herself a little anxious when riding her ambitious pony. This is further aggravated when she has a fall and breaks her arm.

Isla Picks Herself Up explores how a young rider is able to overcome her fear of falling. Isla needs to have the confidence not only to ride her new pony, but also to compete on him. If she can’t effectively jump him then her mother’s investment in Diablo would have been wasted.

This story for the younger reader is a quick and easy read. It is set in Wales and explores some aspects of horse care that help to educate readers. Unfortunately the images that should be in the kindle version don’t all show up! There are little red crosses indicating broken graphics for three out of the four images.  The last one is a lovely illustration. I am sure these would have added to the story, if they had worked.

Born to Run (North Oak 1) by Ann Hunter

October 29, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Alexandra Anderson finds herself in a situation that no person should find themselves in, in Born to Run. Never mind that she is only thirteen years old. On the run for murder, she goes as far as her body will take her.

When she ends up on the doorstep of a large thoroughbred establishment, all she can think about is her plan. The plan to run away and never be found. And when it seems that the woman who is left in charge of her care doesn’t want her there, Alex sees no reason why she shouldn’t keep running.

As much as she plans to go, the horses pull her in an unexplainable way. She is amazed to find a sense of peace and comfort with one weanling in particular on the farm. The owner of the farm, Stephen North quickly realises how the horses could convince Alex to stay. And this is something that North wants – even needs – in order to secure his farm’s future.

Alex is surprised – and scared – to find herself wrapped up in the large family at North Oak. The two teenage girls who are a little older than her are all embracing. Alex doesn’t know what to do with their smothering presence. Or their blatant faith.

As Alex continues to try and run from her problems, she knows it is only a matter of time before everyone at North Oak finds out what she’s done. Only a matter of time before she finds herself behind bars for taking another’s life.

North Oak is a great introduction to this series that focuses on thoroughbred racing. Alex’s foster life is explored nicely alongside the working family of staff at North Oak. Each of the characters are flawed – human – but they have plenty of room for loving others and allowing grace. Born to Run is an easy read, one that horse fans will no doubt devour.

Equine Permaculture

October 28, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

We live in a world that has exhaustible resources. Consequently, the concept of sustainable living is important to many and more commonly being put into practice. Even in the horse world there is a focus on equine permaculture. Many of you may be familiar with the initiatie, Equiculture – a business that focuses on equine sustainable living.

Equine Permaculture is Growing a Following
Equine Permaculture is Growing a Following

I have recently come across another horse related initiative that focuses on this. Equine Permaculture has a tagline of:

Responsible horse keeping and sustainable living via permaculture.

For those who aren’t familiar with the word permaculture, it is a combination of two words – permanent and agriculture. The idea is that people give conscious thought to the design of agriculture so that it is created and managed in a way that is diverse, stable and has “resilient natural ecosystems.” The idea is that people work with nature, not against it.

Equine Permaculture

How does permaculture help the horse owner? Well it helps in particular the soil that grows the plants and grasses our horses like to eat! It’s about restoring soil to the best quality it can be, so that things grow well. This helps the horse owner to cut down on feed costs and for our horses to live as naturally as possible.

For those who are able to help manage the land their horses are on, it is worth learning about equine permaculture! There is a lot that can be done proactively to improve a property and therefore make it more productive – and appealing – for horses. Take a look at the equine permaculture website and get reading! There is a wealth of information to help you learn more.

If this particular topic is of interest to you, then you may find reading and studying of benefit. From here it is definitely possible to look into educating others – and turning it into a horse related career.
