Profile On: Louisa Forstner, Megasus Horserunners

October 26, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently wrote a post about an interesting new initiative with regards to horses and shoes – clip on shoes!  They are known as megasus horserunners  You can check out the post and see what you think – they are still raising funds for the idea although, it looks like they have well and truly met their target goal!

Louisa Forstner is a part of the Megasus Horserunners team.  She has kindly answered some questions about what she does.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
100% :). If I do not think of horses, then I am near them.

What is it exactly that you do?
We are inventing a new hoof protection: Megasus Horserunners – the world´s first clippable runners for horses. My job is to ensure that everything runs smoothly

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes of course! To be independent and to live your dream requires a lot of experience, daring and perseverance.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
You have to feel that it is your life task. It’s not making money, but you’re fighting for a thing that’s important to you. In our case, it is important to us that horses no longer have to walk with iron shoes. We want to offer a healthy alternative.

Favourite horse memory?
Many many! It is more than friendship, it´s family.

Future goals?
To take horses out of the Iron Age for good!

Best thing about your sport/profession?
I do what I love!

“When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes. ” ― William Shakespeare

Rory and El Paso – A Short Story by Robert Stephen

October 24, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Rory and El Paso is a delightful little story about a boy and his horse. Set in the Arizona desert, the author does a great job of describing the local scenery as the story starts. The reader is then directed toward a ten year old boy who exits the house to visit with his pony.

Rory and El Paso by Robert Stephen

The bond between the pair is obvious. Rory is comfortable around his horse and also enjoys spending time with him. El Paso gives the impression of being a very dependable, quiet pinto. Because of this, Rory adores playing with him, practicing lassoing in the corral that El Paso resides.

This is the cause for much amusement for the local boys. As far as they can see, El Paso is a stationary animal, often asleep. Rory is a boy to be mocked for his attachment to such a creature.

Rory and El Paso is a great short story that aptly shows that all is not as it often seems. Rory is able to prove to his three mockers that his horse is very different to what they assume and so is Rory. Robert Stephen’s short story for children is a delightfully well written tale with enough description to help children imagine the story as it progresses.

For those looking for a short horse story to read to their children, add this one to the list. There is a great moral in things not being as they seem and in standing up to bullies by having confidence in who you are as a person.

All Heart by Mara Dabrishus

October 22, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

All Heart continues to enlighten the reader about the lives of July Carter and Beck Delaney. Both their lives have taken a new direction with Beck studying in the city and July knowing she should apply to NYU.

If she does, then she’ll be closer to her boyfriend and best friend. But if she does, she just can’t see how she’ll manage study, relationships, working her ex-racehorse Kali and devote as much time to the track as is necessary. It’s all heart that needs to be invested in racing, nothing less.

As July struggles with what to do, she is dismayed to find her dad is taking on a trainee who is aiming to become an assistant trainer. She is jealous, feeling that should be her role. But how can she take on such a role if she’s off studying?

Alongside this July is trying to work out exactly where she and Beck stand. Although they appear to be an item, she feels that she isn’t getting to see much of him at all. And then when it seems that he might want more of her in his life, she finds him hesitating.

All Heart further explores July’s relationship with her estranged mother and her need to make decisions for herself and her future. It takes awhile for July to decide what she truly wants, rather than focus on what others expect of her. As she does this, she grows and finds things fitting into place. Although life seems so messy and chaotic, she is able to find some semblance of order when it comes to her family, her horses, her future dreams and Beck. The book looks well toward the future, providing hope of a follow on novel.

Horse Applications

October 21, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently saved a pin that focused on the best horse applications (horse apps). In fact, it was this horse application pin that first led me to the Frugal Horsewoman’s website. Amongst all the applications that are available out there for use, many are free and others need to be paid for.

This is perhaps another area that can be entertained for those wanting to start up their own business. I see two potential options:

  1.  You develop and sell your own horse applications. This can be a great way to establish a passive income online. You create the app (or apps) and sell them for a small fee. Assuming they’re of great benefit to the horse community, you should find that you are consistently making sales.
  2. Another way to go about this is to source already established horse applications that are selling well. Contact the creators/owners and work out some sort of a commission deal with them. If you establish yourself online as the place to go for horse applications, then in time people will be approaching you about selling their product! You provide the platform, charge a commission and each time a sale of someone else’s horse app is made, you benefit financially, too!
Horse Applications: do you have an Idea that Others Would Embrace?

Horse Applications

There are many, many different horse products that can be created and sold online. The most appeal to me are those that require the work once and then can be sold many times over. The idea of a horse passive income is just so appealing! If it is for you too, then consider the idea of creating a horse app or two.

Brainstorm what tools you feel horse owners, riders, trainers and breeders could most benefit from. Then think about how you could develop this into an application and make it available for purchase. Horse apps could be your horse business!

Megasus Horserunners

There are just over three weeks left on the kickstarter website where funds are being raised to get this project going.  They were aiming for a total of 100,000 euros and had just over 104,000 pledged as I wrote this post!  You can check out their official website and also pre-order the product!  Why not have a look?

I love seeing new horse businesses starting out and being supported by the equine community.  It’s great to see that horses truly can be a career and there are some brilliant people out there making such useful products!

The world of equine podiatry is an interesting and also expanding one, with many people shying away from typical horseshoes.  It’s truly interesting to see what other products are being put forward as substitutes.

“If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that horses do listen to you. They may not have a clue what you’re saying, but they know the tone in which you say it. I’ll sing to horses so hooked on their own nerves they’re ready to climb into the sky, and sometimes it’s one of the only things that keep them on the ground.” ― Mara Dabrishus
