Horse Patterns and Residual Income

September 30, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently having a look on Pinterest at horse related images and posts. One really creative picture caught my eye. It was the outline of a horse, made from folded pages in a book. How cool! And the page that the image linked to was a horse pattern for sale on Etsy. Unique!

What could you make into Horse Patterns to Sell?
What could you make into Horse Patterns to Sell?

It seems that this clever person has determined exactly how you need to fold a certain number of pages in a book to create the silhouette of a horse! Further to this, she has turned it into a pattern for sale so others can do the exact same thing – genius!

Now horse patterns were honestly not something I had considered with regards to an equine career! And yet, these can be an incredible way to generate a residual income relating to horses. You create the pattern once and sell it many times and generate money each time you sell the pattern. Great!

Horse Patterns

So perhaps this idea appeals to you, but you don’t know how to create different horse silhouettes from folding paper. Well, are there other things horse related that patterns can be made for? Some quickly off the top of my head:

  • Folding patterns on paper – horse shapes in origami, horse silhouettes in books
  • Patterns for checkers to put on the rumps of horses for shows
  • Patterns for horse related clothes such as jodhpurs and riding shirts
  • Patterns for rugs
  • Patterns to create horse jumps

I am sure that are many things that are horse related that horse patterns could also be made for. It’s just a question of them being thought up and then created. And from here, they can be turned into a digital product for sale so others can benefit from them. If you’re enthused by this idea, you may also want to look into the concept of an online horse store.

“Fascination with horses predated every other single thing I knew. Before I was a mother, before I was a writer, before I knew the facts of life, before I was a schoolgirl, before I learned to read, I wanted a horse.” ― Jane Smiley

The Shining Stallion by Terri Farley

September 26, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A spin off series from the Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley, is Wild Horse Island. In the second book in this series, The Shining Stallion, young Darby Carter is living in the place of her dreams. She has found herself living in Hawaii with her grandfather Jonah while her mum is on set for a film. Jonah owns 2000 acres in Hawaii known as ‘Iolani Ranch. He breeds working horses and has a beautiful bay stallion.

Aside from her grandfather’s horses, there are wild horses on the island. Darby is in heaven. She loves horses. Her passion for them and her desire to learn as much as possible override her lack of knowledge about horses. Add to this the fact that she has her own filly – Hoku (Hawaiian for star) – and that she can ride daily and Darby knows she will improve in leaps and bounds.

Although Darby loves where she is staying, she is lonely and not sure she’ll make it as a future ranch hand. A girl around her age named Megan is angry with Darby and she doesn’t know how to change this. Also, without meaning to, Darby accidentally endangers one of Jonah’s horses. Suddenly she is questioning if she belongs on the ranch at all.

Then one night she sees a mysterious horse on ‘Iolani Ranch. When she mentions this, Darby learns about the legends surrounding the Shining Stallion of Hawaii. Her grandfather doesn’t want the stallion around. Another man is trying to catch him. Darby is surprised to find a mysterious stallion causing so much trouble. When he comes back to the ranch, she questions if the outcome can be anything other than bad.

The Shining Stallion is an interesting tale about a horse crazy teen in Hawaii. It throws in some interesting tales about legends in Hawaii and the local language. The second book in the Wild Horse Island series, it is another interesting read from Terri Farley.

Double Clear (Pony Jumpers 2) by Kate Lattey

September 24, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

The second book in this series, Double Clear introduces you to Katy as the protagonist, this time. Katy lives and breathes horses and riding. Along with her mum, they buy, retrain and sell horses.

Katy is currently leasing Molly, a beautiful bay mare that proved to be too much of a handful for her owner. Although Katy knows that Steph is an accomplished rider, she has been happily riding and training Molly for three years, having taken her on at the age of 12. Since then, the stubborn and flighty mare has turned into a promising jumper. Katy knows it’s because of her perseverance – and the fact that she clicked with the mare from the start.

Consequently she is devastated to find that Molly is to be sold – to someone Katy loathes. Not only is she going to miss out on riding the promising young mare, she’s going to have to watch her being successfully competed by Susannah – a young rider who is too harsh with horses.

That in it would be enough to upset Katy. Add the unexpected appearance of her father who has been living in Australia and the teen questions just what else can go wrong? Katy’s father seems to want to be a part of her life all of a sudden. She can’t imagine why, when he’s been missing in action for so many years.

As Katy deals with these two major events in her life, she’s thankful for the emotional support of her close friend, AJ. It doesn’t hurt either that AJ’s older brother Anders is suddenly hanging around. Katy knows that she should consider her best friend’s brother off limits, but it can’t hurt to look, can it?

Double Clear does a great job of helping to reader to better get to know Katy. Throw in some interesting events, a lot of great horse scenes and information and you have another great read by New Zealand author, Kate Lattey.

Grooming Hands – a Curry Comb Alternative

September 23, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently reading a product review on Breeches and Boat Shoes.  The author had been sent a pair of grooming hands to try out on their horse and then write a review for.

This particular grooming item works like a curry comb.  Instead, it is a pair of gloves that you put on and use to brush over your horse.  According to the Grooming Hands website, the gloves are designed with:

  • Specifically placed massage points for easy gripping and optimal pressure
  • Deep massaging tips on middle and ring fingers
  • Open access for thumb and tips of pointer and pinky fingers for dexterity

The science behind the gloves is listed as:

  • Unique thermo plastic with anti-static properties
  • Carbon filaments throughout glove to reduce static discharge
  • Tested across hundreds of animals
  • Latex free

It’s always interesting to see new horse related products that come onto the market.  Generally it seems they come about because someone sees a gap in horse related products and they find a way to fill it, or they see something can be done better – so they do!

'Grooming hands' would be a Great Tool for Sale Preparation!
‘Grooming hands’ would be a Great Tool for Sale Preparation!

That seems to be the way with grooming hands.  They are identified as pet massage and grooming gloves – so not just for horses.  But they definitely seem like a good substitute for a curry comb, to me!  I know my hands end up quite dirty when I am currying horses in preparation for a sale – having gloves to protect my hands would be welcome!

This product that is designed and assembled in the United States has many benefits:

  • Use fingers to scrub the body, loosen dirt, dead skin and feel for lumps, scabs or ticks
  • Ability to use the cloth of the glove to wipe around eyes or nose or face, and legs
  • Able to pick up and/or hold leash, lead line, or halter
  • Massage muscles at the same time as brushing
  • You will never drop your brush again!
  • Use while bathing or washing your pet
  • Machine washable and easy to clean

Why not take a look?  Check out the website link above.
