Crusaders Equestrian Team – Christian Organization

April 16, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently became aware of the Crusaders Equestrian Team, a Non-profit Christian Organization.  What do they do?  They focus on using their passion for horses and horse riding to make the world a better place.  I love this idea!

Want to know more?  A part of the mission statement on the Crusaders’ website indicates:

We are a non-profit Christian charity horse team.  We believe that through our strong beliefs, excellent horses, and the will to do good, we can make a difference in this crazy world!

We use rodeos and grand entries along with parades to promote the charities and causes that we believe in.

Crusaders Equestrian Team: do you Desire to Make a Difference with Horses?
Crusaders Equestrian Team: do you Desire to Make a Difference with Horses?

There are so many ways we can impact this world with horses.  I love the idea of the Crusaders and using their passion for riding to reach others.  Perhaps such a set up is of interest to you to take part in, or even create yourself?

If you’re in the United States and keen to check out the Crusaders Equestrian Team, then you may want to know about their calendar.  Sometimes the best way to establish a horse set up of your own, is to seek out a mentor.  Who better than someone who is already doing what you desire to do?

There are many horse related organizations in the world.  Often they are set up as not for profit and may require volunteers – this may be a way to gain experience and ideas for your own horse organization goals.  Don’t be afraid to make yourself available as a volunteer.  Often what you learn in this role is invaluable.

Attending horse events and developing contacts can only aid your horse goals.  Ask questions and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and your goals!

Green Lodge a Paddy Cummins Novella

April 13, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Green Lodge by Paddy Cummins
Green Lodge by Paddy Cummins

Ricky Barker is a nineteen-year-old Irishman with an incredible dream.  His passion for breeding thoroughbreds has lead to his dream to one day own a stud farm and breed prize racehorses.  In the meantime, he works as a stud hand for politician and wealthy man Sam McArdy.

An unexpected discovery of his boss’ relationship to a well known woman leaves Ricky unsure about how to treat this information. Good at being discreet, he chooses to hold onto this information. Once Sam McArdy discovers Ricky knows, he is eager to do something good for the young man to encourage his silence.

A chance purchase of a filly finds Ricky suddenly the owner of a foundational broodmare for his dream. As the filly’s worth increases, the previous owner is desperate to reclaim her. This starts an ongoing saga for Ricky who only wants to keep what is rightfully his.

Green Lodge weaves an obvious knowledge of the thoroughbred breeding industry in the United Kingdom, romance and the lengths people can go to, to get what they want. The story is definitely a read for adults as it contains sexual content.

Although an entertaining story, Paddy Cummins’ novella starts out with a sex scene and has other moments that are too graphic for my liking. Add to this, consistent changes of tense and I found the story a little difficult to read. Green Lodge covers one of my favourite topics in the form of thoroughbred breeding, but this novella would rate higher for me if it was better proof read and had less sex in it.

Profile On: Sophie Barrington, Archer Creative

April 9, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Sophie Barrington runs an equestrian marketing company, Archer Creative. She has kindly taken the time to answer some questions about what she does.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I’ve been running Archer Creative full-time since our launch in January 2014. As the founder of the business, with a small and dedicated team, my day to day schedule can become very busy. As we are always managing multiple clients and projects, organisation is key! Most weeks, I ride once a week on a Friday afternoon. It’s my reward for a job well done and certainly one of the most important parts of my routine.

What is it exactly that you do?
Archer Creative is the first and only full service equestrian marketing agency in the Southern Hemisphere. This means that we provide a range of marketing solutions to equine companies of all shapes and sizes. Our core services are copywriting, public relations, social media marketing, email marketing, website design and graphic design. Some of our clients require our assistance on a regular basis and some clients come to us on a per project basis.

We share daily tips on marketing the equine business on our Facebook page and we have a monthly e-newsletter which shares the latest from our blog. People are welcome to subscribe.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
As the founder of the business, I must admit that I wear many hats. But, by far, my strengths are in copywriting. I manage a team of sub-contractors who specialise in other areas, including SEO, website design, graphic design and social media marketing, to name a few.

What I look for in my team are people who are highly skilled and passionate about the equestrian industry. What separates us from our competition is that we are horse people.

My recommendation to anyone entering this industry is to develop your craft and follow your interests. Qualifications are important, but when applying for positions it’s crucial to think about the company. How can you add benefit and deliver results?

Favourite horse memory?
This is such a hard question! I’ve been riding for almost 20 years. In that time, I’ve worked at a riding school, gone on horse riding holidays and spent so many glorious hours in the saddle. The only way I can answer this question is to say what I enjoy most about horse riding itself. That’s spending time in the company of horses and amongst nature. You’ll find me out on trails and exploring the wilderness. It’s such a welcome change to time in a busy office!

Future goals?
Since our launch in 2014, we’ve achieved phenomenal growth, having worked with more than 25 companies from four different countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Saudi Arabia. I’d like to continue growing my business and become a trusted agency for equine companies, particularly in Australia and New Zealand. But, most of all, I want to change the industry’s mindset about marketing.

Archer Creative exists to support our clients to achieve their goals. We are a team of genuine and extremely helpful people who are passionate about equestrianism, and we work very hard to create success for each company we work with. Too often, I think people feel that marketing is about coercion or deception, when it’s actually about building long-term and authentic connections with your customers.

Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA)

April 3, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In many countries you need to follow specific guidelines when it comes to medicating horses.  This can be particularly so as a horse carer or equine vet.  The Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority is one such organisation in the UK.

It states on their website:

AMTRA is an independent regulatory body in the UK. Their task is to ensure that the prescription and supply of animal medicines is undertaken in a responsible manner.  This is done by AMTRA qualified persons.

Whilst studying in Ireland, I was amazed to find that horse injections must be administered by the vet.  In Australia there was so much I was taught and then expected to do!  This often included administering injections.  Not so in Ireland!

It is important for horse health and welfare, that medications are administered correctly.  Having a body such as AMTRA helps to monitor this in the UK.

In fact, you can train to become an SQP (suitably qualified person) to administer medications.  At the end of the day, I feel all training regarding horses is worthwhile!

If you’re in the United Kingdom, are you aware of this organisation?  If you are aiming to become a veterinarian, I would hope so!  If you’re interested in what AMTRA offer to horse practitioners in the UK and you have a passion in this area, perhaps it’s a place to consider seeking work at?

So many equine related organisations need people that can assist in non hands on areas.  Consider website work, promotion of the organisation and office work.  Even if an organisation for the horse industry cannot be utilised by you, you may find that you can secure work in this field!  Food for thought.

It is your job as a rider to ensure that as often as possible, the change is for the better.” – Author Unknown

Profile On: Beth Jones of Galloping Graphics

April 1, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have recently come across Galloping Graphics as an online horse store.  Beth Jones was kind enough to answer some questions about her store and horses!

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I am currently focusing on my career/business and I just bought a house, so most of my days are spent working or renovating my house. However, I have plans to buy a horse within the next few years

Galloping Graphics: an Online Horse Store
Galloping Graphics: an Online Horse Store

What is it exactly that you do?
Since Galloping Graphics is a small business, I have many hats. I create all the designs, cut out all the stickers / vinyl, source products, manage social media accounts, write thank you notes, etc.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
With a lot of elbow grease and tenacity, anything is possible. You’ll have a lot of late nights and never really have a day off, but it is worth it.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
I have a degree in advertising and a minor in art which have helped me greatly when promoting my business and creating the art. For people looking to get in to the field, I would suggest having a strong portfolio and to not be afraid of criticism and long hours.

Favourite horse memory?
This is a tough one, I’ve been around horses since I was three. One of my favorite memories would have to be when I was cleaning my first horse’s stall and he came over to just rest his head on my shoulder while I was working. It’s a very simple, but very fond memory. He was a special horse.

Future goals?
My future goals would be to continue to grow with Galloping Graphics, finish my house, and buy a horse.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
The best thing about this sport is the bond you create with the horse. There’s truly nothing like it. The best thing about this profession is being able to combine my creativity with my passion.
