A Horse Named Doodlebug

January 14, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A Horse Named Doodlebug by Irene Brady

This children’s tale written and illustrated by Irene Brady is a delightful story of Jennifer Dickens acquiring her first pony. Jennifer dreams of buying a beautiful black stallion with a long flowing mane and tail. She has saved up for a year from doing as many odd jobs as she could think of.

With a little over fourteen dollars to spend, Jennifer is delighted when the day of the stock auction comes around and she can look for her perfect horse. She is devastated when there is only one – a little black pony that is lame, underweight and with a long shaggy coat.

It’s only when the local butcher puts in a bid on the pony that Jennifer realises she can’t let him be sold for meat. Once she secures the pony, she is left wondering if she’ll ever be able to ride him and as this proves to be more difficult and uncomfortable than expected, Jennifer is saddened that she doesn’t have a beautiful horse to ride.

A chance meeting with the previous owners of Doodlebug shows Jennifer that the half starved, lame pony she acquired actually has an incredible history and is worth a lot. Doodlebug is a delightful read for the younger reader with a happy ending.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
Almost all of the working day and much of the night and weekends – such are the joys of Facebook!

What is it exactly that you do?
I am Research and Marketing Director for EquiFeast. Combining customer contact and technical responsibilities has enabled me to develop products that really help solve rider problems. As our team grows I encourage the same focus on horse and rider needs.

But our strength also lies in our willingness to try novel things. Chelated calcium is proving to improve functions all over the horse and it is very exhilarating to see such a novel approach make our customers smile.

Supplements from EquiFeast

Favorite horse memory?
Winning an unaffiliated prelim dressage test at a local dressage centre on Paddy the horse that got us started down the chelated calcium route. I am the worlds worst rider but 69.55 was a great score from a horse that previously used to enter at A and canter to B and then C before thinking about jumping the judge’s car.

Watching other riders I think it has to be watching Laura Bechtolsheimer (now Tomlinson) winning Gold and Bronze at London 2012 using our chelated calcium supplement!!!

Future goals?
Getting a better understanding of what chelated calcium can do and taking the technology beyond improving behaviour and performance and making progress with health and welfare issues. Top targets for 2016 are mobility (Kissing Spine and less extreme conditions) and Cushings (big trial with the Royal Agricultural University about to start).

Best thing about your job?
Definitely getting calls from customers saying we have saved their wild and uncontrollable horse from the doggers.

Sable Island Horse Project

January 8, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A friend recently suggested I might like to check out the Sable Island Horse Project on Facebook.  She was right!

I have previously written about equine preservation in Mongolia.  The idea of travelling here and taking part fascinates me!  A study is currently being carried out on the feral horses of Sable Island.  As it says on their website:

Sable Island is a 49 km-long, crescent-shaped sand bar located 160 km off the east coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. Renowned for its windswept and grass-covered dunes, wild horses, and shipwrecks, Sable Island is as unique in character as it is in biological diversity.

The study is on the ecology of the island and these feral horses in particular.  If you have an interest in this area and perhaps are looking for a Ph. D. project, check out the details.
