Equestrian Skill Builders by Laura Kelland-May

June 26, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In this short non fiction book that contains “20+ exercises to improve your riding position”, author and seasoned judge Laura provides simple exercises that can be carried out in and out of the saddle to improve the rider’s balance, strength and riding position.

The book has some great suggestions and practical tips that if implemented over a 30 day period, should see a drastic improvement in the rider. Utilising a positive and persistent attitude, alongside Laura’s tips are bound to help the rider succeed.

This book appears to be a simple and effective tool; if the lack of proof reading can be ignored, it is worth investing in for the information contained within.

Equine Altitude Stalls
How much of your day/week is related to horses?
ALL day EVERY day is dedicated to horses in my business. Besides the 72 standardbred rescues my family has saved, I am in constant contact with clients and potential clients all day and through the wee hours of the night because my business is international!!

What is it exactly that you do?
My company is Equine Altitude International – we build, fabricate and ship horse stables world wide that are simulated in high altitude for better health and performance. We treat horses like modern day Olympians and bring the MOUNTAIN to them!

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes! I am fully devoted to my company and have been making a very nice income as Altitude Simulation has become popularized as a legal healthy option to horses lung health, bleeding and performance. Depending on the size of the project we can make a generous profit. We try to get the applications out there without chunking on too much profit in order for clients to see how awesome the technology is… And with this they always come back for more!!

Dina, Equine Altitude International

Favourite horse memory?
My favorite horse memory was when Shamus Award – a maiden – won the 3 million dollar Cox Plate after receiving his altitude stall off the ship in Australia just 5 weeks prior. The altitude helped his lungs and his low blood count and he went wire to wire creating history as the first maiden to ever win this most prestigious thoroughbred race in the world!

Future goals?
My future goals at this present moment are to introduce our technology to the Middle East and Hong Kong and travel abroad watching more clients’ horses excel in far far away places!

Best thing about your sport/profession?
The best part of my profession is that I become an integral tool and part of some incredible racehorses training regimens. I am always in the center of the action and I get to see horses being treated like modern day Olympians with the best of care! It also enables me to save more racehorses and fund retirements for these majestic beautiful animals.

Profile On: Fred Kunkle, Golden Wings Horseshoes

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
Presently about 25% of my day is directly involved with horses. When I was training and racing I believe it would be 75% of the day’s activities.

Goldenwings Horseshoes

What is it exactly that you do?
I’m presently involved with Goldenwingshorseshoes.com.  Goldenwings Horseshoes are the most revolutionary horseshoes in 2000 years and have been designed to help a horse remain sound from the hoof to the spine.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Horses as with any occupation have those involved who do very well and those who do not. The individual who is committed to horses as a profitable venture, or as a fun hobby and source of relaxation will succeed. As with any vocation success comes to those who love what they do, study and work toward a goal with an attitude of being the very best at what they do whether it’s for fun or profit.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
The are universities and colleges that offer equine programs, or one may get started with the beginning role of working in a horse environment.

Horseshoeing, blacksmith, and farriers are always in good demand and there are schools located across the US. Others begin the trade as an apprentice or shoeing or trimming on their own horse and make it a business. Blacksmiths and farriers can earn into six figures of income.

Favourite horse memory?
There are many for me, beginning with helping to remove the birth sac from the nose of a newborn foal and then helping the foal to stand and take his first drink of milk, or to driving a Standardbred horse in a horse race.

Horses have given to me many pleasant memories since I was a little boy on my grandfather’s farm.

Future goals?
My goal is to promote the why for Goldenwings Horses, to have Goldenwings on as many horses as is possible, to enable horses to remain sound, happy, and healthier than is presently possible with the ordinary horseshoes being used today on horses.

You may wish to visit Goldenwingshorseshoes.com to see the why that I’m so excited about; the why for Goldenwings for your horse.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
The best thing for me is to be in the process of learning that horses are creatures that are far more intelligent than most people think, can go away for an extend period of time and come home and remember me and their other horse buddies, that they can be companions that respond to love and kindness, and bring pleasure to anyone who will take the time to respond to them and return the kindness in their eyes.

Showdown by Amy Elizabeth

Showdown by Amy Elizabeth

Wow! Once again, Amy has outdone herself! I loved Cut and Run, was drawn in by Indian Summer but think that Showdown has turned out to be my favourite in this trilogy.

In the final book in the series, Alec is still coming to grips with his father’s death, and finds that he is receding more and more into himself. Rebecca is trying to give her husband his space, but feels that he is shutting her out from his daily struggles. Meanwhile, Tommy is preparing for the biggest day of his life, whilst harbouring a secret that he has kept hidden for many years.

Each of the books in this series are great as a standalone novel; it’s nice to read a little more about different characters and in Showdown, you get to find out where Tommy is coming from. I really enjoyed reading about his upbringing and how he came to be working for Walter and then Alec.

The length of this story – and the others in the series – is great; there is a lot to read and at no point does it feel like the author is just trying to fill pages. Each of the events that occur in the novel work to build up to something or help to provide further insight into why a character responds a particular way.

It was lovely to see Shania make an appearance in this novel – and provide her candid friendship when it was needed most. I loved how Alec and Rebecca’s marriage was built upon – and came out stronger as they worked through their trials together.

As always there is knowledgeable horse information throughout the story, but the characters also get away from the ranch and are explored in some quite different locations. Showdown is a great way to round out the series and provides enough mystery, angst, romance and entertainment to make this one another story by Amy Elizabeth that I’d highly recommend.

June Challenge – Choose one Skill

May 31, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

It’s great to have an overall (at times, overwhelming) goal, but it’s the little steps that you take toward this goal that make it happen. Every step forward is that little bit closer to your end goal.

So your challenge for the month of June is to choose one skill that you haven’t mastered, but need to in order to achieve your career goal. This could be a technical hands on skill, like:

  • plaiting up a horse
  • learning flying lead changes
  • rising to the trot

Or it could relate to relationships with horse personnel – potential clients, staff or managers. Perhaps you need to connect with someone and start a business relationship.

Whatever your one skill is, write it down and outline how you will go about achieving it over June. As always, feel free to comment on your goal and good luck!
