Managing Equine Health Free Online Course

February 14, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Hi everyone!  A recent email from CAFRE I feel is worth sharing:

Learn how to keep your horse healthy with a new online course

Managing Equine Health is the next topic to be covered in the suite of online CAFRE courses for horse owners. This course will follow on from the first online Equine Health workshop and look at further conditions which horse owners and managers have to deal with. The course will cover some of the internal systems of the horse to give a greater understanding of the conditions which affect them. Parasites which affect horses and a parasite management system will also be discussed in the course. Learners can access the lectures at any time during their scheduled week.  Upon completion of all parts of the course participants will gain a certificate of completion from CAFRE.

The course will be live from Wednesday 4th March and run over three weeks, with a new lecture each week. The course is free of charge and participants must enrol online by 26th February 2015 by following this link http://www.cafre.ac.uk/industry-support/industry-training/ or call 028 9442 6880 for further information.

I’ve done 3 courses with CAFRE so far and find them to be really well run, informative and a great refresher on previously known knowledge as well as a great update on new knowledge!  And of course, I love that I get a certificate at the end 😉

“The Horse’s Prayer – I’m only a horse, dear Master, but my heart is warm and true,
And I’m ready to work my hardest, for the pleasure of pleasing you. Good corn, and hay, and water, are all that I wish to ask. And a warm dry bed to rest on, when I’ve finished my daily task. Don’t strike me in needless anger if I’m slow to understand,
But encourage my drooping spirits with a gentle voice and hand. Finally, O my master! When my health and strength are gone – When I’m getting old and feeble, and my long life’s work is done – Don’t sell me to cruel owners, to be slaved to my latest breath,
But grant me the untold blessing of a quick and painless death;
That, as you have always found me a patient and loyal friend,
The years of my faithful service may be crowned by a peaceful end. I plead in the name of the Savoir, Who cares when the sparrows fall. Who was born in a lowly stable, and knows, and loves us all!” – Author unknown

Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 1

February 12, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 1: Your Position by Jane Myers

The Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 1: Your Position offers an in depth look at the rider’s position as a whole. Broken down into different segments, it addresses how the rider’s feet, ankles, calves and lower legs as a whole should be positioned. It then moves onto the upper leg, the torso, upper body and head and their positioning.

With each part of the body discussed, a description is provided along with notated photos of how the body should be positioned. In light of this, possible issues that may arise with each body part and its position are also discussed.

Jane Myers points out incorrect riding positions and what can be done to fix certain issues. Throughout the text, further reading is provided in the form of links to articles on the Horse Rider’s Mechanic website. Reference is also provided for further reading in the next two books in the Horse Rider’s Mechanic series.

Part 1 of these workbooks provides a great overall picture of how the rider should be positioned whilst horse riding.

Better yet, it covers greatly, issues that may arise and how these can be corrected. It seems a wonderful text for bringing to light issues to the rider, that may otherwise have gone unknown and held the individual back from becoming a more effective rider.

A Horse Called September

February 10, 2015 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

A Horse Called September by Anne Digby

This novel by Anne Digby explores the close relationship of two young girls as they grow up together, their love for horses helping to develop and strengthen their friendship. Mr and Mrs Dewar own Chestnut Farm. Anna is their only daughter, and Mary’s best friend, in spite of the fact that Mary is the daughter of the hired cowman.

Mr Dewar initially buys two ponies for the girls and they learn the joys of horse riding and horse care. As they develop riding skills and outgrow their ponies, Mary is devastated to find that her pony should be sold alongside Anna’s. Only Anna is getting a new show jumper in its place.

Even though the new horse belongs to Anna, the girls share him as if he were both of theirs. Mary develops a great love for the gangly thoroughbred that loves to jump. When Anna is suddenly to be sent off to another school, Mary is thankful she can look after the horse for her friend. She is devastated to find that Mr Dewar however wants to hire her to do the job and expects that she won’t jump the horse they’ve named September.

Mary and Anna grow apart and it feels to young Mary that she has lost her best friend as well as September. It is only after September is sold after a riding accident that Mary questions if things can ever possibly return to how they used to be. Eager to defy the snobby girl that was once her best friend, Mary puts together a plan to show September’s worth when the Dewar family has written him off for good.

A Horse Called September is an interesting and entertaining read, with good winning out in the end.

Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog

February 4, 2015 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog by Deanie Humphrys-Dunne

Charlene is a horse that loves to jump – and does it well! Alongside her friends, they work hard to be the best animals they can and help each other out. Bentley Bulldog turns up at the stables one day whilst Mary is riding Charlene.

He is an opinionated bully that surprises the other animals who live there. Elliott, a much larger dog works hard to kindly correct Bentley. Hattie the chicken finds her feathers are ruffled as Bentley insults her. She works hard to prove that she is more than just a simple chicken.

Charlene is working hard to gain the most points in each horse competition she enters, so that they can gain the award for the highest score overall. As she works hard with her owner Mary, Charlene also works hard with her friends to help them when they need it, and to encourage Bentley to be the best bulldog he can be.

The story has a delightful message about working together, trying to be your best, even though mistakes happen and how bullying can negatively affect yourself and others. Author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne shows that it’s never too late for a bully to become a friendly and loving character, sometimes they just need to be shown how!

February Challenge (Advertise Online)

February 1, 2015 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Whether you’re a business or an individual, it’s important to advertise what you have to offer to others. This could be skills that someone needs in the equine industry, so it’s important they know where to find you! For an individual, this could be on job seeking sites or a networking site for business individuals, such as LinkedIn.

Even if you’re currently in a job, it shouldn’t stop you from promoting yourself as a valuable employee. Other job options may come along because of it, or you may find that people connect with you as they’re keen to break into the field you’re already working in. If you can find your employer other valuable employees, that is a good thing!

For a business, it is important to have an online presence so that people from around the world can find out about you in a few clicks of the mouse. Develop a website, Facebook account and Twitter account to be able to reach current and future clients. Let them know what they want to know – what you can offer, your rates and success stories but also share what you want them to know – causes you’re passionate about.

For the month of February, work to establish yourself online. Provide quality content, not quantity and don’t be afraid to reach out and let people know about you. Include important links in the footer of any emails you send out.

Missed last month’s challenge?  Check out Reflect and Refresh.
