January Challenge (Resumé)

December 30, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Hi everyone!

A new feature for Equus-Blog is going to be a monthly video challenge specifically for you!  Each month I will put forward in a few minutes, a new challenge for you and some tips on how you might go about achieving this.

I’d love for this to become really interactive so I’d like to encourage you to do a few things:

  1. Leave a reply on this blog in regards to the challenge and when you’ll have it complete
  2. Leave me with your contact details (a website, email) so that I can touch base with you and see how you’re going with it
  3. Share the post/video with others and challenge them to undertake the monthly challenge with you!
  4. Share it with your friends as a way to let them know what you’re doing so you’re being kept accountable 🙂

Remember the key points:

  1. Accountability (set a due date, write it down, tell someone)
  2. Visibility (put resumé online, email it to people)

As discussed in the video, here’s a link to the video resumés post that I have created.  I thought it was a great way for someone to show us in photos what they’re capable of, rather then try to express it succinctly in words!  What do you think?

If you want to make use of the resumé that I have created a template for, you can download the 2014 resumé.

Blog Carnival Reminder

December 28, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

It’s once again time for me to remind people about submitting horse education related posts for the January edition of the Equus Education Blog Carnival.

A reminder that your post/s could be:

  • an informative post about horses
  • a review of a riding lesson
  • information about horse related courses or study
  • a book review of a great horse book
  • something else equine educationally related

Submissions will be taken up until January 10th and then all posts that fit into the category of equine related education will be shared in a post on January 14th.  If you’re looking for exposure for your blog or know of someone who is, point them towards submitting a post or two!

Friday Feature: Office Administration (Equine)

December 27, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This week’s letter is O. If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Equine Nursing.

Many horse related businesses need someone to handle the office administration side of things.  This work could be full or part time and may even be done with the use of an internet connection, from your own home.  Often it is located at the equine premises, however.

Many Horse Properties Require the use of Office Administration.

Tasks may include:

  • keeping horse records
  • organising pays and tax taken out
  • paying super for employees
  • ordering supplies in relation to office, horse feed or even medications
  • responding to client queries
  • filling in mare returns (for a stud operation)
  • dealing with breeding, racing or leasing contracts
  • sending clients bills
  • creating advertising materials or updating a business website and email list
  • answering phones and emails
  • entering horses for competitions/races

Office administration work isn’t specific to the horse industry.  However, someone with a working knowledge of horses and a particular equine industry (eg performance, trail rides, breeding, racing, etc) as well as office administration experience would bode well for a working farm who needs paperwork kept in order.

It may also be a job that allows you to be indoors and not work weekends; or work mornings in the office and then afternoons out with the horses.

I don’t have particular posts on Equus-Blog that explore different administration jobs, but can assure you that in every equine related business I’ve worked, there was someone to help out with the administration side of things!

Video Resumes?

December 25, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

A few months ago at work an email was received from a young French woman who is seeking out horse related employment overseas. Attached to the email was a YouTube video that is a form of resumé.

I watched and thought, what a great way to show off your skills in many different areas, in just a few minutes. Indeed, at times a picture says more than a thousand words. Take a look!

For those of you who are a bit tech savvy, have you considered this form of demonstrating your horse skills?

3D Printed Horseshoes!

December 23, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Advances in Horse Technology can be Pretty Incredible!

Well technology is amazing; it really astounds me at some ideas that people come up with and how they make them a reality!  In an Australian article posted on the 18th of this month, it has been announced that a 3D printer has been able to create a horseshoe that was then tacked onto a horse’s foot!

Imagine it, you can enter a design, put it through a 3D printer and have it come out as an object!

For full details that are available in the article, check out 3D printed horseshoe breakthrough for Australia’s leading science research body.

If you’re interested in the idea of creating something new for the horse industry, don’t give up on it!  There are so many creations being imagined and then acted on.  Take a look at the Equilume discussed on Equus-Blog.
