The Sport of Baronets by Theresa Romain

March 16, 2020 by Christine Meunier

The Sport of Baronets is an entertaining novella about the horse racing industry. It is also a romance. This was another kindle book that I downloaded and read over the Christmas period.

This novella focuses on young woman Hannah Chandler and her most recent acquisition.  The champion colt Golden Barb was purchased from a rival family – the Crosbies.  As Hannah approaches Bart Crosby about taking the newly acquired colt home, she is dismayed to find that the handsome young baronet doesn’t take her seriously. It seems she has come to do a job that men should do.

To make matters worse, the horse is stolen whilst Hannah is visiting.  This removes any chance she has of taking him home and showing her father she can help to run the family business.  Hannah battles with the thought that Bart is behind the theft – after all, he has a lot to gain if she cannot acquire the horse that she has purchased.

Hannah and Bart grudgingly work together to solve the mystery before Golden Barb’s next race.  Hannah is amazed to find in this process that she is drawn to Bart.  It seems that the attraction is mutual.

The Sport of Baronets is a fast paced, easy read.  It is a horsey romance that is for adult readers.  Some content would not be suitable for younger readers. The historical focus is an added bonus.

Free Equine Calendar Resource

March 13, 2020 by Christine Meunier

So I’ve recently come across a pdf download that is incredible. It’s a free equine calendar resource by the government of South Australia. They’ve called it a Perpetual Calendar. And it is – it covers the months of the year and the number of days, but doesn’t assign particular days of the week so it can be used year in, year out.

What I love about this calendar is that it’s got beautiful horse images as well as the days of the month listed. And then on top of this, it adds in information applicable to horse keeping.

For example, at the end of January, there’s a page on grass pasture management and details on how tall grass should be whilst it is grazed by horses. How cool!

February then looks at dung beetles and horse parasites. Fast forward to March and there’s information on hoof and dental care. This even includes a diagram of the hoof with each point!

At the end of each month, there is a page of helpful horse management and care information. You can read about condition scoring your horse, managing manure and also preparing for emergencies. And the final page looks at the vitals of the horse – oh so handy. Oh, and did I also mention that this resource is free? You can’t lose!

Agrifutures Thoroughbred Horses: Mentoring Program

March 10, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I received an email recently from Agrifutures Australia. This was after subscribing to their newsletter earlier in the year. They currently have a mentoring program open to Australians who are working across various industries. One is the thoroughbred horses industry. Applications close Friday March 13th. And so I thought it was worth putting up a quick post to share this information about Agrifutures Thoroughbred Horses and their mentoring program!

Curious and also want to read more? You can head straight along to the Agrifutures Australia website and read about the application process. As it states on the linked page:

” AgriFutures Australia is committed to supporting the people driving the future prosperity of Australian rural industries and communities. AgriFutures Australia, in conjunction with The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA)*, is currently seeking applications from individuals working in an AgriFutures Australia levied industry to participate in a High Impact Mentoring Program facilitated by Inspiring Rare Birds Australia.”

AGRIFUTURES THOROUGHBRED HORSES: MENTORING PROGRAM

It is beneficial in any industry to be able to learn from those who have gone before us. It is also beneficial to learn from those who are actively involved in the industry. So if you’re working in the thoroughbred industry in Australia, why not take a look at this mentorship program? Just remember, applications close this Friday.

And while you’re at it, you can also subscribe to their site. This will allow you to be kept in the loop about future initiatives. One great way to build on your career is to ensure that you’re linked with those who can help you better yourself. This can be through education as well as other initiatives.

“…for there is no other feeling in the world to compare with it if one loves a great horse. It gives a thrill that nothing else ever can. It cannot be put into words, because words cannot express it.” – Samuel Riddle

Fall for Me by Heather Slade

March 9, 2020 by Christine Meunier

I got a lot of reading done over December whilst on holidays and am now finally catching up on reviews! Fall for Me by Heather Slade was one such book that I read.

Olivia Fairchild loves her daughter, live music by the band CB Rice as well as horses.  As a single mother with a young adult daughter, she is amazed to find that she catches the eye of the lead singer of her favourite band.  Liv finds her defenses going up.  Why would a talented guitarist and singer with throngs of fans as well as ridiculous good looks be interested in her?

As Ben Rice pursues the single mother, Olivia fights between a desire of allowing herself to fall for the ‘hot guitarist’ and living a life for herself.  As a nineteen year old, she forfeited her dream to be a competitive barrel racer. This was to be beside the man she loved as he worked as an F15 pilot.  In time he lost his life when his plane was shot down. But this was not before Olivia fell pregnant with their child.

Suddenly the dreams of a nineteen year old fell by the way side. Instead, she took on the incredible task of raising a daughter – alone. Fast forward twenty odd years and Liv is at a crossroads of what to do.

Fall for Me by Heather Slade

Fall for Me has a great mixture of music, horses and also romance.  Horses don’t feature highly at the start of the novel. However, this builds as Olivia works to do something for herself.  As she breaks back into the barrel racing world, she finds that the two things she loves – Ben and barrel racing – aren’t conducive to each other.  It seems she could pursue her dream as a barrel racer or follow Ben around as he tours with his increasingly popular band. The choice isn’t an easy one to make.

Fast Track Program (THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS AUSTRALIA)

March 6, 2020 by Christine Meunier

It’s no secret that I am such a large fan of the thoroughbred breeding industry.  So I wanted to share that applications have been opened for the Fast Track Program for 2020.  I saw this advertised recently on the Racing Jobs website.  Further research on the Thoroughbred Breeders Australia website indicates:

Looking for an exciting career with horses?

  • 12-month traineeships on offer
  • Work on a respected stud farm
  • Get paid to study a formal qualification
  • Kick-start your career in the thoroughbred breeding industry

Want to find out more about the fast track program? You can check it out on their website. They also state:

A limited number of applicants will be selected to take part in the 12-month program which incorporates a mix of on-the-job training and formal study.

If successful, you will be assigned to a reputable stud farm where you will be employed via a full-time traineeship. You will also be enrolled in a Certificate III in Horse Breeding; a nationally recognised qualification.

Over the 12 month period, trainees will attend two intensive learning blocks (6 weeks in total) with the first block commencing shortly after enrolment. These blocks are designed to provide the theoretical knowledge needed to complement the on-farm training.

This formal aspect of the program will take place in Scone NSW, which is in the heart of one of the world’s biggest breeding centres.

You can apply for the Fast Track Program online. Applications close March 13th.

Perhaps it’s a sign of an obsession that I would apply for this in a heartbeat and surely love it! Even though I already have horse breeding qualifications at the Certificate III level and higher. There is nothing quite like learning about horses, travelling, gaining a qualification and also networking in a great industry!
