November 9, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Who doesn’t love a free webinar? Especially when it’s horse related! My Horse University along with the Equine Land Conservation Source are offering a free webinar on November 13. It will be held at 7pm ET. Presented by Gwen Wills of the Pennsylvania Equine Council, it’s titled Action for Equestrian Trails in Pennsylvania and Beyond.

With a focus on trails access for equestrians, Gwen Wills will be speaking on the issues, solutions and collaborations that need to be understood between local and state agencies, equine advocacy organisations and also consultants. On top of this, she will explore behaviours relating to equestrian trails and how to avoid potential conflicts with other user groups and how to work with them, rather than against them.

She will also cover good environmental practices that aid in protecting utilised land for trail rides from environmental damage.

Interested in hearing this free webinar? You can head along to the associated My Horse University page and register for it. If you’re really keen to listen to this but cannot make the live session, then you’ll be pleased to know that it will be recorded and archived for others to access online at a later date. You can check out all of the My Horse University webinars under their archive link.

Beyond

The webinar is to be hosted utilising Zoom, which is a great online resource. You can sign up to use this webinar tool in advance to ascertain that it works on your computer. Apparently the speaker Gwen has developed and also conducts workshops relating to Trail Stewardship. These run over 1 and 3 days.

They look at maintaining sustainable trails and preparing horse riders to help preserve trails for the benefit of hikers, bikers as well as those who are equestrians. If you have the opportunity, be sure to check out this free webinar.

The Western Canadian Farriers Association

November 7, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A not for profit organisation was set up in 1983 to benefit Farriers in Western Canada. This is known as the Western Canadian Farriers Association. It states on their website that their main purpose is “to organise farriers for the promotion of excellence in the art and science of farriery.”

I like that the act of trimming and treating horses hooves is seen as both a science and an art! The WCFA is governed by a constitution and by-laws and membership occurs annually.

They further state on the WCFA site:

“The WCFA is not only an association concerned with farriers, but with everyone in the horse industry, aiming to inform the public, and particularly the horse owner, of the quality and standard of farrier service that is available.”

On the front page you can focus on their main points:

  • Find a farrier
  • Ask a farrier
  • Join our membership
  • Our newsletter

The Western Canadian Farriers Association

The site has more to offer than the above including business articles and articles by farriers. You can also find out about the association and membership fees.  Knowing about associations like this could benefit you.  Especially if you’re running a sole proprietorship or small business as is often the case as a farrier.

You’re able to show you run a quality business offering a great service by being part of a recognised association. You can also stay up to date on the latest news in your industry, promote your services and connect with other farriers in the region.

“A horse which stops dead just before a jump and thus propels its rider into a graceful arc provides a splendid excuse for general merriment.” ― H.R.H. Prince Philip

If Wishes were Horses by Caitlyn Lynch

November 5, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If Wishes were Horses has a great plot idea. Twenty five year old Brianna Lane is a graphic designer in Melbourne, living a comfortable life. Her mother hails from an Irish background and these roots lead to an unusual conversation for the young adult. Brianna is amazed to learn that her uncle who she never met has left half of his estate to her. And this estate is a sizeable, profitable thoroughbred stud.

Brianna is floored and cannot believe what this will mean for her future. The other owner is keen to buy her out and the figure is astronomical. Still, the Australian woman decides she wants to see the property for herself – and learn about her uncle. What she finds over in Ireland surprises and pleases her greatly.

The country is beautiful; the farm is incredible. And the co-heir is far from what she expected. His passion for horses is obvious and his young age and good looks are a pleasant surprise. As Brianna gets to spend time with him and learn about the running of the farm, her attraction to Declan doesn’t appear to be one way at all.

If Wishes were Horses

If Wishes were Horses is a short read that contains a lot of horse content. The story has a lovely ending and could be even better if the crude sexual content was removed. For two people who have known each other such a short time, it amazes me that authors can throw them together in such a physically intimate act. And then write about it so crassly. The romance idea for the story is a great one but I felt it could have been so much better if the language was toned down and the couple were actually given time to explore a growing attraction rather than jump into bed as soon as they were alone.

Alberta Stables Initiative

November 2, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

At times I wonder if we didn’t have the joys of the internet, if some setups would be so easy to initiate and promote. Heather Mitchell-Matheson is the Alberta Stables Initiative Coordinator. This initiative is a great idea!

“The goal of the Alberta Stables Initiative is to create a professional association for stable owners and managers. This initiative will improve and increase the public profile and awareness of the stable industry in Alberta, build a network of stables, provide educational opportunities to industry members, inform and educate government and the public on the stable industry, increase accessibility for those choosing horses as their leisure activity and, most importantly, create a common voice for Alberta stables.”

For an area that recognises the challenges urban living places on keeping horses, this setup is a great idea. It allows people to research different equine housing possibilities within the area of Alberta, Canada. It is a collaborative project of three different setups. These include the Horse Industry Association of Alberta, the Alberta Equestrian Federation and also the Horse Industry Section of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

Alberta Stables Initiative

The mission statement of the Alberta Stables Initiative is:

“To strengthen Alberta’s commercial stables by promoting safety, animal welfare and sound business practices as well as providing support, education and marketing opportunities for the stable industry.”

There are many great associations and federations set up for horses and their owners and carers. It’s great to see however that other initiatives are created collaboratively to fill a gap or meet a need. Would something like this be of benefit to where you live?

“When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes.” ― William Shakespeare
