Horsely Online Horse Products Store

January 24, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I was contacted by one of the founders of Horsely to see if I might receive a product from them in exchange for a review.  Now when it comes to books, my answer is always a yes.  However, keeping in theme with Equus Education, I had to decline for these (very nice) equestrian and lifestyle products with a focus on horses.  That doesn’t mean that I can’t put together a blog post to let you know about the Horsely online horse products store, though!

According to the co-founder of Horsely, they

“aim to provide horse lover’s with high-quality, price-competitive products to meet their equestrian & lifestyle needs.”

A look at their website shows that these guys have a nice collection of horse themed items.  There are braided belts, horse watches for men and women, some gorgeous pillow covers and even horseshoe pendants.  There’s also a great range of horse related clothing.

The products vary in price with some items around $20, while others are up around the $100 mark.  Most of the horse pillow cases caught my eye – there are some beautiful images portrayed on them!

Having an online store can save you a lot of money, therefore increasing your profit margin when you make a sale.  You don’t have to hire store space and pay someone to be in the store for a set number of hours.  Instead, you can set up an online process that automatically deals with orders.  Then they just need to be packaged and posted to the person who has already paid for them.

Of course, there is the added cost for buyers of paying for shipping.  And they need to know about your site to find it online in the first place.  But with some clever marketing, hosting a website for an online store could be quite lucrative.  Of course, you would need to store your products somewhere for when people purchase them.  So this would need to be catered to.

Then again, if you sold digital products… You know, horse courses, eBooks and the like, then you wouldn’t need to pay for storage at all!  But you would be looking at the need for higher bandwidth as people download content directly from your site.

Man & Horse: the Long Ride Across America by John Egenes

January 22, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Late last year I was given a copy of Man & Horse: the Long Ride Across America by John Egenes to read and review.  This story tells a unique tale of a young man in his mid twenties.  He sets out across the North American continent on his four year old Quarter Horse.  In 1974, he spends 7 months travelling from California to Virginia on horseback.

Man & Horse: the Long Ride Across America by John Egenes

Man & Horse is a non fiction book, recounting a tale from more than forty years ago.  It’s interesting to read the book that was written after the event.  John is able to recount what he went through with his young mount named Gizmo.  Obvious issues of feeding himself and his horse are common throughout the 7 months of travel.

John first enlightens the reader to his lifestyle as a child and growing up as a teen.  Having lost a father figure at a young age, John acknowledges that his mother had to work hard to raise himself and his siblings.  They were often in want, but learned to be happy on little.  This trait was one that perhaps allowed John to travel with his horse across the continent.  He had little more than $100 in his pocket.

The tale of their travels enlightens the reader to particular needs for horses.  These include regular shoeing, feed, safe types of horse feed and the opportunity to rest between bouts of being ridden.  Gizmo sounds like he was a hardy, fit young horse but the trip wasn’t without its tolls.  Mosquito and Deer Fly bites, concerns of colic, run ins with snakes as well as daily issues with finding water and grazing.

Told through John’s eyes, the reader is taken back to a time when it truly was possible to be alone on the trail.  John had no phone, the internet wasn’t known back then and his camera did little work along the trail.

John battled bad weather, incredible storms, many hours alone with his horse as well as a black widow spider bite.  He encountered some incredible characters, many generous enough to offer stabling, food and a bed for the night along his trails.  And he even encountered some not so nice characters who seemed bent on bothering him and his horse.

Man & Horse is an enlightening tale that shows the US in a time where things have drastically changed in the 21st century.  For those who are interested in long horse rides and US geography with some history thrown in, this book is worth a look.  It’s also a great book to inspire those who have a dream that they just need to get up and pursue.

Equine Insurance and Passive Income

January 19, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you consistently read Equus Education, you’ll know I have a passion for equine passive income.  I have touched on the topic of equine insurance before.  But today I wanted to consider the idea of equine insurance and passive income.

Passive income or residual income is earned by a product that you create once and are able to sell over and over again.  An example?  A horse book.  Once it is written and published, it can continue to earn money over the years without needing to be written again.

Equine Insurance and Passive Income

I believe equine insurance could work in this regard for those with the right knowledge and qualifications.  If you have a background in insurance and know horses, then you can create products in the form of equine insurance packages.  Insurance for stallions, competition horses, broodmares, young stock, etc.  The insurance is your product.  People pay a regular low fee (monthly or annually for example) for their horse/s to be insured.

Yes, if there is a claim you will have to pay.  But for the majority of clients that you acquire, there won’t be claims.  And so you’ll be generating regular passive income from people paying for their equine insurance.

If you wanted to make it truly passive so that you’re not doing any ongoing work, you create the packages and then hire people to market them and process payments.  Equine insurance and passive income, what do you think?

Your services would be of interest to competitors, racehorse owners, bloodstock owners and even those who own horses for pleasure riding.  You could also branch out into looking at horse business insurance.  This could be for horse riding instructors, liability insurance and more.

Using YouTube to Gain Clients for Your Horse Business

Using YouTube to Gain Clients for Your Horse Business | Equus Education

I wanted to discuss another free tool that you can use for attracting clients in your business.  You might provide a product for the horse industry.  Maybe you have an awesome equine service.  Maybe it’s both!  An example?  Horse feed products and nutritional advice for horse owners.  You can be using YouTube to gain clients for your horse business.

I started back this week at one of my dream jobs.  I am currently working casually for the National Centre for Equine Education.  My role includes teaching and training students, marking assignments, developing resources and getting these online for students.

Whilst going through some introductory subjects for students starting at the end of the month, I was made aware of a YouTube video by Dengie Horse Feeds.  The video talked about the horse’s digestive system and the importance of feeding little and often.

It is a short, educational video that finishes with a link to the Dengie website, a phone number and the prompt to chase them up for any horse feeding needs or queries.  The video is short and effective.  And the end result was people were guided toward their website which displays their horse nutritional products for sale.

Using YouTube to Gain Clients for Your Horse Business

Now this video has the potential to work passively.  You create it once and upload it to your free YouTube channel for your business.  Then anyone can watch it anytime.  And through this, they are guided to your site and your products (or service!).

So have a think about your promotional activities and how you can help to impact the horse world.  Could you provide educational videos relating to your field of expertise?  Could you do this for free and then encourage people to check out your online site or store?  Food for thought 🙂

Time Will Tell (Timeless #1) by Sandy Loyd

January 15, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently downloaded this first book in the Timeless series for free on Kindle.  Time Will Tell has some unique features in it that drew me to want to read the story.  Firstly, there’s a thoroughbred stud farm.  It is being used to help rehabilitate kids who have been through a rough patch in life.  Maybe they’ve lost a loved one and found life to be all too much – this was the case for the female protagonist Libby Edwards.

Libby finds true enjoyment in working on the farm where she was able to heal after her mother’s death.  It also helps her to forget about her disappointed father and controlling fiancé.  Twin Oaks is a place where she feels she truly belongs and is making a difference.

Secondly, the book has the added element of time travel.  What I found really unique about the story was Libby’s ability to go back in time to the same stud farm.  This is when it was just starting to flourish as a thoroughbred breeding and racing facility.

This time back in the 1800s is when the Kentucky Derby idea was first birthed and a local racetrack was being formed.  Through Libby, the reader is able to learn about this big race in the US in the 21st century.  Plus, they get to read about the men that brought the grand horse race to fruition in the first place.

Thirdly, throw in a good looking stud farm owner, undeniable chemistry and a charming love story and you have the great makings for a novel.  Time Will Tell had many horse facts.  There was a focus on my favourite industry – thoroughbreds, racing and breeding – and a great love story.  It was also a unique way to enlighten readers about the origins of the Kentucky Derby.  An enjoyable read.  The only qualm I had was that a mare named Pride in the future was referred to as a stallion for a bit of the story and then went back to being a mare.
