Equine Stock Photos

January 18, 2024 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently, equine photographer Shelley Paulson shared on LinkedIn about her equine stock photos. In fact, it was about an additional 2,000 photos she has recently added to her online library. At the time that she posted about this, she shared that her

Premium Equine Stock Photo Library features over 15,000 authentic equestrian-approved photos and videos.”

Wow!

As a horse person, I find it very easy to distinguish between a good (horse) photographer and one that doesn’t know horses. It may be the horse’s pose, ears in the wrong position, the handler on the wrong side, or something else. But, something that may not be noticed by a photographer who doesn’t know much about horses will be very quickly picked up by a horse person!

An example? Recently I had someone from a Marketing department invert a photo of me with a horse. This resulted in me leading from the ‘wrong side’. They did it to make the image work with the text they wanted to put over it. But to me, it screamed ‘incorrect!’

Having an equine photographer who is great at taking quality photos and knows what makes a good horse picture is a wonderful thing.

I can tell you now, that Shelley’s horse photos are well worth checking out. You can do so via https://shelleypaulsonstock.com/ – perhaps you’ll find something that appeals for your next horse related event, book or website that needs a photo – or two! And if you’re a photographer yourself – who knows horses – perhaps it can be some great food for thought about your own equine photography career.

And of course, how you may build up an extra source of income. This just screams passive income to me!

Want to learn a little more about Shelley and what she does? I encourage you to look at the profile that Equus Education did on her in late 2022 and her Equicapture Photo App! In this digital day and age, there are so many opportunities for those with the skills who are willing to think outside the box.

A Patriotic Day at the Rodeo by M.D. Ford

January 16, 2024 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently M.D. Ford had her book A Patriotic Day at the Rodeo, free to download from her site. It’s always nice to get free horse books! And whilst I love grabbing a freebie from a favoured author, it’s also nice to check out authors I may not have yet read! Free books can be great for this.

It appears that A Patriotic Day at the Rodeo is a continuation of the Rocking Horse Rodeo series. It focuses on a rodeo event that young Dee and Henry are taking part in. They are attending with their horses Hank and Top. Dee is excited to see all the patriotic reminders at the event. She loves her country!

The horses are decked out in blue, red and white. It may be their hooves painted or the tail bag they have or another ornament on their tack.

As someone who is autistic, Henry finds the noise of the event difficult. Dee is mindful of her friend’s concerns and quickly comes to his rescue with some ear buds. This way they can both enjoy the bright colours of the fireworks at the rodeo.

This short story will be an enjoyable read for young horse fans – and one that’ll help them to focus on reading independently.

At the end of the story, the American flag is provided in an illustration and each part of it – the colours and stars – are explained in regard to what they stand for. I found this a lovely addition to the book.

If you’re looking for a rodeo focused series for young horse fans that are starting to read independently, be sure to check out M.D. Ford’s books.

Develop your Microskills for a Horse Career

January 4, 2024 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I have recently been reading Simple Money, Rich Life by Bob Lotich. So far, I absolutely love this book and what is is explaining and encouraging! Now, whilst it is not a horse focused book at all, I believe aspects of it can be applied to your horse career journey.

How so? One chapter encourages readers to keep learning and honing their craft. To get paid the best, to be sought out, you have to be someone who is willing to keep learning and improving. Whatever you plan to do with horses, you can improve on skills and knowledge that may better your chances for future jobs and career growth.

I just love horses and read as much as I can to learn about them. I also take opportunities to learn new skills. When first working in the thoroughbred industry, any chance I got to view a foaling (or do night watch), medicate a horse (thus learning oral medications, intramuscular injections, subcutaneous injections and even intravenous injections), hold a mare for teasing or cover, I jumped at it!

In time I became a skilled worker who was known for their enthusiasm and growing skills. I couldn’t get enough! And consequently, I was never out of stud work, even if I moved between studs to gain different experiences and skills.

Whilst a full time stud hand, I started a blog (this blog) about horse careers. That lead to an unexpected phone call and an offer to teach equine studies. This is now my career that supports myself and my family with four children!

Through my love of reading, I have picked up on some grammatical errors in horse books – or incorrect information. I have reached out to authors and notified them, in case they wanted to update their book and correct the errors. (No pressure to them, just information they can choose what to do with).

In time this has led to being paid for some editing of books and even recently, being approached to edit a non-horse book because of my ‘keen eye’ and easy way to work with. What lovely feedback! I assisted this self-published author with reading their book and providing feedback for edits. You can view it live on Amazon – note the editor! 😀

Do all you can to improve your skills and develop new ones. And especially be keen to take on opportunities as they’re provided to you! Who knows what your future horse job will be? My current one combines:
  • my passion for horses,
  • my interest in reading and writing,
  • the ability to help others learn about horses and get a horse qualification and career
  • online resource development
It is an incredible combination of my skills and passions.

Consider what micro skills you could learn or improve on in 2024. For your dream job, what skills or knowledge would make you invaluable?
  • Would knowing what a mare in season looks like? Or how to assist a mare that is having a difficult foaling?
  • What about being able to promote an equestrian business online and run social media marketing?
  • Or would you be of more value to a future employer because you can negotiate with people and delegate tasks well?
Take some time to consider a few skills that you can research online, learn more about and develop. Perhaps you may even find some in the education or free resource categories on this site!

Embrace of the Wild by Linda Ballou

December 22, 2023 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Not too long ago I was contacted by author Linda Ballou about reading Embrace of the Wild for review. Now I’m always up for reading another horse book! And this is especially so when I’ve enjoyed previous works by the requesting author.

You can check out my review of The Cowgirl Jumped over the Moon, also by Linda Ballou.

I just loved the look of the cover of Embrace of the Wild as soon as I saw it! And it depicts well, the focus of this story: travelling and seeing the sights of nature on horseback. But it goes so much deeper than that.

Isabella Bird is a woman that some may argue is past her prime. At an age when she should be married and raising children – as was expected in society – she is instead travelling away from the United Kingdom to a drier climate. Isabella has suffered from a spinal issue from a young age and spent most of her life in pain.

Embrace of the Wild by Linda Ballou

It isn’t until she is out exploring the island of Hawaii and forced to ride astride – instead of side saddle – that Isabella discovers a new sense of freedom. Free from pain and free to ride away from prejudices set upon her.

Embrace of the Wild beautifully explores the travels in the middle of Isabella’s life. Hawaii, horse riding, Colorado and the Rocky Mountains all feature heavily. It was a delight to read the descriptions that Linda provided of Isabella’s travels, the people she met and interacted with, the various horses that she rode and the sights she got to see.

Lots of rain, rivers and waterfalls, visiting a volcano. These are beautifully described alongside Isabella’s consistent travel on horseback to visit her various destinations. I really enjoyed her Hawaii trip, but just as much loved learning about Jim Nugent, who she was to meet later in the Rocky Mountains.

Embrace of the Wild is wonderfully descriptive, from outlining the weather that Isabella encountered, to the ease – or difficulty – of the mounts she rode, to the flowers and animals that were seen along the way and finally to the perilous climbs up a volcano and to the top of a mountain to see God’s glorious creation.

Embrace of the Wild features horses heavily and beautifully provides a story of a woman well known for her adventures back in the 1800s.

Cowgirl and the Ghost Horse by Rae Rankin

December 15, 2023 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Cowgirl and the Ghost Horse continues on in the cowgirl series by Rae Rankin. You can read my review of Cowgirl Lessons from earlier this year. In this book for early grade readers, young horse fans learn about a ghost horse legend.

With rhyming paragraphs and beautiful illustrations on each page, the young cowgirl talks of her adventures.

Through a deep cave, down a forest trail and even across a river on a log. For each place where the cowgirl seeks out the ghost horse, the reader is able to read about it in rhyming sentences.

Eventually the young cowgirl finds an old barn and searches out the elusive ghost horse.

I read a copy of this short story at Halloween time. It was a very fitting horse-related read, with a ghost focus. For young readers who enjoy horses, this book should take their fancy!

Added bonuses are the lovely illustrations that accompany the words, and the rhyming phrases throughout the story.
