Andrology and Morphology Specialists

November 13, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have been completing the last two subjects of my Equine Science Degree this semester, and one of the subjects related to Equine Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

There are a lot of Specialists in Equine Breeding

Many of you may already know the breeding and physiology side of horses fascinates me.

I was surprised however to find out that there are specialists in the field of evaluating semen.  It seems to me such a niche market!  But then again, this is what this blog is about – discovering horse related careers, no matter how unusual!

Assessing the health of semen is important – particularly in the artificial insemination industry, but even in the thoroughbred industry if things are going wrong with breeding.  As such, there are people who are experts in this field.  If this area fascinates you, why not consider a career in sperm morphology or andrology?  It may be worth looking into!

This is important anywhere where horses are bred.  In fact, I just discovered an equine andrology course that was held in Brazil!

Teach in a Box – Horse Educational Resources

October 16, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was contacted recently by Ray Alam, of Teach in a Box, an Australian based online marketplace where teachers can buy and sell educational resources. You may have seen my previous posts about Teachers Pay Teachers in which I have a store of educational horse resources or Udemy in which I have an online course for Breeding the Mare.

If you are able to develop horse resources, any of these three platforms may be of interest to you with regards to making them available to people online and bringing in another form of income. Like with anything, there are some people who make a full time wage (and then some!!) and others who make pocket change. Either way, who would turn away a little extra money?

The great thing about each of these online sources is that they’re free to join and you can benefit financially as well as by building a name for yourself as an expert educator in a particular horse related field. Why not check them out?

TeachinaBox is due for launch October 21. You’re welcome to head on over and check out the products that I have listed there and perhaps consider signing up yourself – be sure to list me as your referrer (christinemeunier)!

Studying Veterinary Bioscience

October 4, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was assessing a student late last week and discussing their plans for after VCE and the completion of an agricultural course. This particular student indicated that they were hoping to get into Veterinary Bioscience.

I am aware of Veterinary Science as a study choice, but not Bioscience. This student indicated that they were keen to get into the area of quarantine and such a degree would help them do that.

In fact, looking at the course at La Trobe University in Australia, it indicates that graduates can find work in:

  • the Department of Environment and Primary Industries
  • the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service
  • and animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA

Although each of these areas aren’t solely horse focused, they do play a great role in helping to educate horse owners, keep horse properties safe with regards to susceptible and notifiable diseases; manage horses coming into and going out of the country and set standards for the welfare of horses under human care.

Double Fencing is one way Horse Owners have been Educated to Increase Biosecurity

If you have an interest in any of these areas, perhaps such a degree is worth looking into.

“The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and freedom.” – Sharon Ralls Lemon
