Profile On: Shelley Paulson, Equestrian Advertising & Editorial Photographer

December 5, 2022 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Another person I recently reached out to on LinkedIn about being profiled was Shelley Paulson. She was kind enough to provide some incredible detail for budding equine photographers! Read on below.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I live on an acreage and care for my own horses, and my work is 100% horse-related. So I would say at least 75% of an average day is related to horses.

What is it exactly that you do?
Primarily, I am a Commercial Equine Photographer. This means I work with brands and businesses to create photos and videos to help them market and communicate their value to customers. I also have an extensive Equine Stock Library companies and magazines use when they need images for publications, social media, and marketing projects.

Secondarily, I have a mentoring and education program for Equestrian photographers. I offer small group mentorships, standalone courses, and many free resources. This is to help equestrian photographers grow in their skills and gain the confidence they need to take better photos and grow a successful business.

Multiple Income Streams

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full-time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes, but it can be a challenge. I live in Minnesota, so the season when I can offer portrait sessions is painfully short. This is what led me to create multiple income streams to help me continue earning money throughout the year. Depending on where people live, they may find the same issues and struggle to have a full-time business unless they plan to travel to warmer states to work in the winter.

The other challenge is that many photographers start out doing it as a hobby they are passionate about and aren’t trained in how to run a business. This generally leads to undercharging and burnout from working too many hours for too little money. Pricing for profit and understanding how to run a successful business are two strong predictors of success for equestrian photographers.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
If someone is still in high school and considering becoming an equestrian photographer, I recommend finding a college with an entrepreneurial or small business major. Photography itself can be learned outside of the college setting, but business education is harder to find.

Favourite horse memory?
Last summer, I added a beautiful dunskin Morgan filly to my herd. She was born at a friend’s farm just a few minutes from where I live. So I spent as many evenings with her as I could from the day she was born. I remember one evening in particular when she lay in the grass and let me lay next to her with her head curled under my arm. I’ll never forget that feeling.

Future goals?
Last summer I went to Iceland for an equine photo tour. I returned renewed from the experience and with a beautiful portfolio of images. I would like to plan more trips like that where I get to photograph horses and experience parts of the world I’ve never been. In 2024, I’m hoping to visit South Korea and photograph horses there.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
I recently asked photographers who have been through my mentorship WHY they do Equestrian Photography. Not a single person said they did it for the money. I love that my profession is driven by a love for horses and their owners.

Horse Syllables Activity added to TeachersPayTeachers

October 6, 2022 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

If you have had a good look around this site, you will have discovered that I love education. And I especially love education that is horse focused. I write horse books that are educational and entertaining. And I also write horse educational resources that others can use to teach about horses, or to teach skills with a horse focus.

Over the past couple of years, I have had bouts of two young children being at home and needing to do school work from home. This has made me more aware of what they’re learning at school and the kinds of activities they do. And of course, it has given me some ideas for digital products!

I am pleased to share that 100% of my votes on TeachersPayTeachers are 5 star! And I aim to continue to produce educational resources that teach, are of use in the classroom or at a riding school and that focus on horses.

My most recent resource is aimed at grade one and two students, or 6-8 year olds. In case you know of someone who may be interest – or you are! – here are the details:

Horse syllables activity – this activity is to help students to understand the number of syllables in a word. They can work through the lists on the 5 activity pages and sound out the word, clapping for each individual sound to recognise the number of syllables.
They are then to write the word into the appropriate column, or they can cut out the words and paste them into each column. The number of horse shoes matches the number of syllables.
Page 1: up to 3 syllable words activity relating to horse gaits and gender
Page 2: up to 2 syllable words activity relating to horse colours
Page 3: up to 3 syllable words activity relating to horse breeds
Page 4: up to 2 syllable words activity relating to horse foods
Page 5: up to 3 syllable words activity relating to horse riding activities
Page 7: teacher’s notes with answers
Skills encouraged in this activity: sounding out words, recognising syllables, reading, writing.
Curious? You can head on over to the product on TeachersPayTeachers.

Foundation Level Horse Resources

February 26, 2021 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In this COVID-19 environment, I’ve been in a position to view a lot of resources that my daughter brought home. She was in her first year of schooling last year. So when home schooling was required, she suddenly had a lot of worksheets she needed to cover over a week. And it got me to thinking about foundation level horse resources.

My daughter was in her first year of school – foundation. The activity sheets she was working through, I was suddenly wondering how I could put a horse spin on them. I know, I know – I’m obsessed!

You may already know that I write educational horse resources. This is another passion of mine and it works as a nice little side of passive income. Curious? You can check out my store at Teacher’s Pay Teachers – https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Christine-Meunier. You can view the quality of my work through the featured free product. (And if you have a further look, you’ll find there are more *free* products available for download ;)).

Most of my resources are for young adults or learners in the VET sector – Vocational Education and Training. So typically these students are 16 years and above.

But in 2021, I’m going to explore some foundation / starting primary level activities. So why not check out my first? The Horse Colours Activity Sheets. You can view it online here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Horse-Colours-Activity-Sheets-6625748. And if you know of anyone who may be interested in such horse focused resources with an educational spin, then please spread the word! Thanks.

Edified – Education Grants

September 9, 2020 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

I love the word edify. It means “to instruct or benefit, especially morally or spiritually; uplift.”  As an alumni of CSU, I have recently been made aware of Edified Energiser Grants for 2020.  They are now open.

As it states on the Edified grants site:

“Helping you help others: ‍at Edified, we believe education can transform lives. We also believe that powerful change can be led by individuals with passion and commitment. We’ve created the Edified Energiser Grants (EEGs) to energise people working to improve education around the world.

EEGs are worth A$5000 each and are awarded to individuals or groups with a compelling plan to improve education for their community.”

As always, when a particular resource, business or skill captures my attention, I question how it can be used in the equine industry.  So here’s a question for you: could you make use of a $5000 grant for equine education?

Edified - Education Grants | Equus Education
Edified – Education Grants | Equus Education

The plan could be small – becoming a teacher in your community. It could be a grand plan – creating a new EdTech platform to bring free education to world. Or anything in between.

“EEGs are open to people of any nationality (domestic and international) who are currently studying at, or have graduated in the last 5 years, from an Australian, New Zealand or UK Higher Education, Vocational or English Language institution (part-time, online and offshore campuses accepted). Your project can be delivered in any country in the world.”

Applications close October 31st!
