Gap Year Equine Experiences

June 30, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

On Trail in South Africa

Uni sent out a message to the equine science students about conservation work in South Africa and I thought I’d scout the website for horse related work!  Found two that may be of interest to the student keen to take some time off school next year and get in some horse experience overseas – what could be more appealing?

  1. South Africa Horse Riding and Conservation Experience – this one seems to me a great opportunity to clock up hours in the saddle, gain conservation experience and perhaps add to the resume with the view to being a game ranger or even zoo worker in the future.
  2. Australian Jackaroo / Jillaroo School – a great chance to visit the land down under and learn about the cowboy way, mustering cattle and shearing sheep!

Whispering Back

June 22, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Whispering Back is a non fiction book on horse training, broken up into many chapters.  They each tell the tale of a horse that the authors and horse trainers – Adam Goodfellow and Nicole Golding – have worked with.

Whispering Back by Nicole Golding and Adam Goodfellow

What I found unusual about this book – and love! – is that Adam came to horses on account of Nicole at a later age in life than many. It was during university that he flippantly made a comment about Nicole purchasing a horse she’d fallen in love with in a nearby field. Little did he know the journey that would take him on.

A couple living in the UK, Nicole and Adam attended a session run by Monty Roberts and were instantly convinced that there had to be a better way to reach and train horses than to muscle them around. Each chapter of Whispering Back details their growth as horse people, troubled horses they worked with and how accomplishments were made over time.

If you have a passion for horse training and natural horsemanship, I encourage you to get a copy of this book.  Of interest to me also were the many references to different horse trainers and educators in the industry – it seems I’ve got some more research for blog posts!

Whispering Back is an interesting read and the fact that it is factually based makes it all the more appealing to me.

In my library? Indeed!  I may have to have a look out for the other work by these two authors.  Definitely the topic was insightful and inspiring!

Health for Horses Vaccination Guideline

June 9, 2014 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Vaccination Guidelines at Health for Horses

Here’s one of those free online resources worth checking out!

The Vaccination Guideline at Health for Horses allows for horse owners to enter their horse’s name, age and classification to determine potential vaccinations that should be undertaken for that particular horse.

From here a list of potential diseases to vaccinate against are linked to, as well as recommended vaccination products and when to vaccinate.  Not bad!

To top things off, you’re even able to download a .pdf version of this file with the information on it.  A great way to keep on top of paperwork, particularly if you’re running a horse business!
