July Challenge (Use Free Resources)

June 29, 2014 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

There are so many opportunities to grow your knowledge and collections online without having to spend.  The July challenge on Equus-Blog is to make use of these free resources to better yourself.

Let’s focus on this in 3 particular areas:

  1. Networking – work to build up connections that have the potential to be beneficial to your career over the long term.  Connect with people that are in the industry you’re in, the one that you aim to be in and the industry/ies that you’ve been in and can offer advice about.
How to do this?  Consider the likes of LinkedIn, Horse Networking, Facebook and/or Twitter.  You can set up a profile and start to promote yourself and your skills, whilst also connecting with people that have similar interests or career aspirations.  All of these have free account options – what have you got to lose?
  2. Educate yourself via free resources and groups that you can join.  Not every piece of advice or information online is worth taking on, but there are some great resources out there to educate and inspire you.  I have some free resources (and some paid ones) that relate to equine educational resources over at TeachersPayTeachers.  The resource category on this site has posts that detail free fact sheets, webinars, electronic resources and more – and the best bit is that they relate to horses and horse business!
  3. Share advice and resources that have benefited you.  Don’t focus solely on what you can get for free; become that person who gives to others because it will benefit them, too!
Over time people will look to you for advice and seek you out, because you’re recognised as a person who is keen to help, generous and able to provide sound feedback or advice.  This is a great way to continue to build up your network of contacts and have people share with you, other beneficial resources they’ve come across.

So what could your goals be for this July challenge?

  1. Create your online profile/s now!
  2. Reach out to people in your industry or the industry you want to enter – set a goal of a certain number of people (say 7 people a week / 1 a day) to try to connect with.
  3. Make a note of any advice or resources that you have found beneficial and start to promote them to others who you feel would also benefit from them – again, do this as soon as you find the resource and share it openly/publicly or set a number of people to share it with.

As per usual, make sure you set deadlines, tell someone about your goals for the month and get started 🙂

  2. Equestrian Professional is hosting a free webinar with regards to Bookkeeping for Horse Professionals on June 23rd.  Be sure to register!

Health for Horses Vaccination Guideline

Vaccination Guidelines at Health for Horses

Here’s one of those free online resources worth checking out!

The Vaccination Guideline at Health for Horses allows for horse owners to enter their horse’s name, age and classification to determine potential vaccinations that should be undertaken for that particular horse.

From here a list of potential diseases to vaccinate against are linked to, as well as recommended vaccination products and when to vaccinate.  Not bad!

To top things off, you’re even able to download a .pdf version of this file with the information on it.  A great way to keep on top of paperwork, particularly if you’re running a horse business!

Free Farm Planning Electronic Resource

What Would Your Ideal Horse Property Consist of?

At uni this semester I am undertaking an elective Property Planning and Development.  I look forward to the day when I can apply the principles to my husbands and my property, but until then, am content focusing on the agistment facility where I keep my gelding.

We are required to map out what is available on the property in the form of facilities and paddock subdivision and then create another overlay where we put in proposed changes/additions with a focus on sustainability.

This is possible to do manually with a printed out aerial map of the property, or electronically.

If choosing to do so electronically, we’ve been pointed towards a program that you can gain for the cost of postage (otherwise it’s free) from eAgribusiness.  If you’re establishing your own setup, the cost of postage is well worth investing in (and probably can be claimed on tax ;)).

International Events

January 11, 2014 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’m studying marketing as one of my subjects for my Equine Science Degree at Charles Sturt University, and have been made aware of www.eventseye.com.  This site lists events that are occurring around the world, searchable by:

  • name
  • theme
  • date
  • location
  • organiser
  • keywords

If you’re hoping to establish relationships overseas, or want to know about events that you can promote your equine product/service at, how great to know about this site!  If you search by keywords, and enter ‘horse’, it gives you a list of 53 events worldwide!

I made a note of only the first six examples:

  • HUND & PFERD – Dortmund (Germany)
VDH National Breeding Show and Exhibition for Horse Aficionados
  • SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE – Clermont-Ferrand (France)
    Fair specialized in Livestock Production
  • HORSES – Tampere (Finland)
    Horse fair
  • DIHF – DUBAI INTERNATIONAL HORSE FAIR – Dubai (UAE – United Arab Emirates)
Equestrian Event for the Middle East
  • ADIHEX – INTERNATIONAL HUNTING & EQUESTRIAN EXHIBITION – Abu Dhabi (UAE – United Arab Emirates)
    International Hunting & Equestrian Exhibition
  • EUROHORSE– Gothenburg (Sweden)
Equestrian Fair. Everything for the Horse and Rider

If you have a horse business that you’re planning to take internationally, or one that you’re setting up, I encourage you to consider international opportunities to grow.
