Amish Horse Whisperer by Esther Weaver

December 19, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Amish Horse Whisperer is a short and sweet novella that heavily features horses. Elizabeth Glick had two close friends in life. Paul and David. David she fell in love with and married. Whilst Paul went on a trip away, David looked after Paul’s heavily pregnant mare, Irma.

When Irma gives birth, David has an inkling that something is wrong and goes out in the freezing weather to tend to the pair. Elizabeth is against the idea, knowing it to be too cold out. And yet David goes and assists the pair, saving the foal’s life. The result is that David’s life is lost due to developing pneumonia.

As Elizabeth battles with the loss of David, Paul comes to her aid consistently. He has made a promise to David that he will look after the woman they had both grown to love.

Amish Horse Whisperer is a good mix of horses, romance and the Christian faith. Unfortunately, there were a few things that detracted from the read for me. The tense consistently changed and some sentences didn’t flow very well, making the story at times confusing.

I have read quite a few Amish novels and am learning the non English phrases as they come along. Some are easy to work out in context such as Gotte being God and gut being good. Unfortunately, although unfamiliar terms were easy to understand in other novels that I have read, this was not the case in this novella. The author could improve this by not assuming that all non English words are self explanatory. Weaving definitions into the story would really help.

I am someone who loves horse novels that are educational and correct. There was reference to David’s character giving the foal mouth to mouth to save its life. This is incorrect – horses cannot breathe through their mouth. Technically speaking, it should have said mouth to nose. Aside from these issues, the story is a quick and nice read.

Horseman’s Jingle by Jerry Williams

December 16, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I love reading horse books that give me ideas about other horse ventures people are participating in. I have been able to learn about a third horse business idea through Jenifer Morrissey’s book, the Partnered Pony. This time the focus was on the Horseman’s Jingle by Jerry Williams.

Now to me, a jingle is a little song that you might hear, advertising a product. But according to Jerry’s website, it indicates:

Taken from the great basin term, jingle, for gathering horses, The Horseman’s Jingle is the place where aspiring horsemen gather to learn, encourage, and support one another.

The Horseman’s Jingle - Have you Heard of it?
The Horseman’s Jingle – Have you Heard of it?

I love this idea! There is so much that we can learn from each other. We can also help others to be accountable for their actions, their words and even their aspirations. As Jenifer points out in her book:

Horseman’s Jingle founder Jerry Williams suggests that sometimes it’s better to invest a little time in ourselves because in the end we’ll be better partners for our equines. He emphasizes that 80% of success is mental; it isn’t always about ‘doing.’

Jerry promotes himself on his site as a mindset and communication strategist. I love that he uses horses to do this! He aptly says, ‘Everything starts with a thought… Make it count.’ We definitely need to hold our thoughts captive and make sure they’re positive and proactive. Interested in knowing more about what Jerry does? You can check out his website.

Focusing on the philosophy of true horsemanship developing from the inside of a person, out, the website boasts online courses, MasterClass clinics as well as private and group coaching. It is set up to help people stay on track (focused), to encourage them to develop new skills and to build upon what is already known.

Horses and Logging

December 14, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

As I read through Jenifer Morrissey’s the Partnered Pony book, I have had my eyes opened to yet another horse business opportunity.  Horses and logging! One particular statement caught my eye:

And of course I have used my Fjord and my Shetland-Welsh cross for forest work in our logging business.

Although I have read a few novels on Kindle lately that reference the logging industry, I hadn’t really considered this as a horse domain. And yet a quick search online shows that horses are still a favourite for carrying out logging work.

In a world where we want to do things efficiently, horses are appealing.  When there is a focus on sustainability and doing things green, horses too are appealing.

Horses and Logging: Draft Horses have Many Uses
Horses and Logging: Draft Horses have Many Uses

Many reasons are put forward for the benefits of utilising horses over machines to carry out logging:

  • They make less of a negative impact on the area
  • They utilise environmentally friendly ‘fuel’ in the form of hay and grain and release a lot less gasses to be concerned about
  • They can be cheaper to run
  • Horses are easier to navigate around such an environment

Check out an interesting fact sheet put together by the University of Kentucky about the benefits of using horses for logging.  Note that it seems to be detailing information collected from 1996, however.

There are also a heap of logging resources found on the Rural Heritage website. Details are provided of teams for sale.  And there are even apprenticeships that knowledgeable draft people can undertake in the area of farming.

Perhaps you have a love for draft breeds and so the idea of horses and logging appeals to you.  Maybe your fascination lies in pine and how logging is carried out.  Or maybe you’d love to breed horses that can be utilised in the logging industry.  Whatever your focus, it seems to me that there are plenty of opportunities for horse fans to consider the logging industry as a possible area to work.

Morning Glory (North Oak 3) by Ann Hunter

December 12, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Morning Glory is the third book in the North Oak series by Ann Hunter. Alex is finding herself fitting in with the Showman family and she’s just starting to feel like she could belong. With an unusual sense of anticipation for a family Christmas, Alex is dragged shopping with Laura Showman, her honorary sister.

Whilst out, the girls get into an amusing debate about Santa Claus. As they continue the heated discussion, Laura gets distracted whilst driving and there is an accident. When Laura’s future health looks grim, Alex finds herself wracked with guilt. Add to this the fact that the Showmans seem to only have eyes for their ailing daughter, and Alex questions how she could have gotten her hopes up about belonging in the family.

As Alex is questioning where she fits into the scheme of things at North Oak, Brooke is determining what she wants for her own future in racing. When she is asked to ride for another trainer, she is rapt at the opportunity to make some of her own connections. The filly that she rides – Morning Glory – sweetens the deal, too. Brooke is in love and determines to purchase the filly when she comes into some unexpected money.

Unfortunately, Morning Glory is well named and so Brooke struggles to work out what can make the filly perform like she knows she can.

Morning Glory is a great exploration of North Oak’s three teenage girls and their own battles in life. They are human and flawed and can all do with a little grace at times. The third book in the series is an interesting follow on from the first two and introduces readers to a new character who looks like he could be sticking around. Worth the read.
