Dangerous Journey by Rosemary Simmonds

October 8, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

This children’s book is made up of eleven different short stories revolving around horses. Each of the stories features a young horse rider or owner as the main person in the story. This helps to make the stories relatable to young readers.

Dangerous Journey by Rosemary Simmonds
Dangerous Journey by Rosemary Simmonds

Keeping things interesting, the stories are varied. They cover boisterous ponies, those who misbehave, searches for the right dressage horse and even a horse rescue. The location of the stories varies too. You’re invited to travel with riders across plains in South Africa where antelope and zebras aren’t uncommon. Then you travel to England where ponies gallop across fields. And on further again to Germany and some beautiful dressage horses. The topics of carriage driving, playing polo and competing horses are all covered, too.

The short stories covered in this book collection include:

  • Dangerous Journey
  • The Empty Field
  • Catch as Catch Can
  • Rustlers on the Moor
  • Count Your Blessings
  • The Lie
  • Coming Up Trumps
  • A Spectacular Pony
  • Circus Tricks
  • Champions
  • The Search

Rosemary Simmonds does a great job of depicting a variety of horses within each of the short stories. Horse information is correct and written in nicely. One story I struggled to comprehend when a young girl spent all her savings bidding on a pony and then told her parents! Other than this, the stories are quite believable and a great mixture of adventures that can happen when you own and ride horses.

All the stories contained within Dangerous Journey provide great descriptions of the characters and also the places where they feature. The words are followed up nicely with beautiful illustrations by four different illustrators.

Garrocha – a Horse Discipline

October 7, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

There are a number of different disciplines related to horses that are known to many around the world. Consider the likes of dressage, show jumping, cross country, racing, western disciplines and polo and polocrosse. I recently stumbled across one that I hadn’t heard of before – garrocha.

It was whilst reading the Outback Equines website, that I discovered they offered lessons in garrocha. I was intrigued!

As it turns out:

The Garrocha is a lance or pole, it comes in different lengths depending on what it is being used for. Centuries ago it was used as a weapon during the wars. In Spain it is used by the vaquero (cowboys) on farms to move cattle around rather than roping and to help bring stock in. It is used to keep the bulls off the horses while riding around the pastures stock checks.

It is also a competition where two men on horseback chase a bull and the rider with the Garrocha needs to get the bull with a single clean knock-over, as marks will be lost if more than one attempt is made.

You can read more about it here.

Garrocha as a Career

What Discipline do you Love on Horseback? Garrocha is one!
What Discipline do you Love on Horseback? Garrocha is one!

There are two common ways to earn money relating to a particular horse riding discipline if you’re keen to turn it into a career. The first is to go professional. Often this requires a deep commitment of time and money. Many horse riding sports require one or more mounts as well as entry fees and special riding gear.

The second option is to teach. Once you’ve experienced a sport – and even found success with it – then you are in a position to enlighten others. You can charge a fee as you teach them about the riding discipline, it’s rules and how to do it effectively.

If you want a horse riding career, then consider the varying disciplines that are out there. You may first gain a career through riding and competing in that particular discipline. This can be followed up by teaching others to do the same thing in future years. Garrocha is one such possibility!

Equine Psychotherapy Institute

Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry
Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry

If you have an interest in equine psychotherapy, then you may be interested to know about the Equine Psychotherapy Institute.  For those interested in studying equine assisted psychotherapy training there are two options:

  1. Students who are already Registered Psychotherapists, Counsellors or Mental Health Practitioners such as Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Mental Health Social Workers and Mental Health Nurses, who are ‘in relationship with horses’ (whether a beginner or very experienced horse-people), and are wanting to offer Equine Assisted Therapy or Psychotherapy services. This group has Mental Health Qualifications and Registrations.
  2. Students who are passionate horse-people, may have qualification in teaching, coaching or management, have a keen interest in helping others grow and change, and are wanting to learn more about powerful processes and experiential learning with horses. This group do not have Mental Health Registration.

You can enroll into a course to become qualified via the equine psychotherapy institute website.  You can also search for qualified practitioners around Australia.

It’s great to see that training and qualifications are offered to both professionals in the mental health field and those who have skills with horses.  The area of psychotherapy with horses needs both kinds of individuals.  If you are a person who fits both of these categories, then even better!

Horses are wonderfully honest.  Horses are a great tool to help people.  This is in spite of their intimidating size.  They can help emotionally and physically and to learn skills, like team work.  Psychotherapy with horses is an interesting health area that is developing at a great speed.  It’s wonderful to find places that offer training and qualifications for those interested.

Triple Bar (Pony Jumpers 3) by Kate Lattey

October 1, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Triple Bar does a great job of introducing the reader to the other side of the story. Susannah Andrews is portrayed in Double Clear as a spoilt brat. Even worse, she is known to abuse horses and shouldn’t be trusted – ever.

When you’re able to see the story from Susannah’s point of view, things change drastically. Susannah is in a wealthy family and her parents insist on only owning ponies that perform. Likewise, they want to know that their daughter will do everything she can to win.

In spite of this, Susannah isn’t guilty of the abuse to horses that has been pinned on her. When she has a revelation about her harsh riding, she works to change this, too. In time she learns to care for her ponies as one who loves them, rather than one who sees them as winning machines.

Triple Bar by Kate Lattey

Triple Bar explores the dynamics in Susannah’s family – with a stubborn father, an estranged brother and submissive mother. It also shows how the sole focus of winning can alienate the one person who is expected to perform well.

Susannah believed her parents when they indicated that show jumping friends would be a distraction. But as she battles to perform as her parents insist she does, all Susannah needs is a friend – or two. When one comes surprisingly in the form of AJ, Susannah questions if this newcomer to the show jumping world is genuine. Surely AJ wouldn’t want to associate with someone who is hated by the show jumping world, much less be friends with them?

Triple Bar does a great job of introducing the reader to Susannah and her complicated life where ponies are just as important as they are to AJ and Katy. It’s a great read in the series.
