Spirit of the West by Jahnna M. Malcolm

Spirit of the West by Jahnna M. Malcolm
Spirit of the West by Jahnna M. Malcolm

A part of the Treasured Horses Collection, Spirit of the West tells the story of 10 year old Wind Dancer (Jessie). Jessie is an Indian and has been raised in a tipi with her tribe.  She has grown to love and work with the Appaloosa breed.

Things change greatly when her father is offered a job on a large ranch to work with the horses there.  Jessie is excited but apprehensive about the move. As she settles into life on the ranch, she realises how different her Indian roots are from the ‘civilised’ white people she is surrounded by.

Eager to fit in, the young girl finds it easier to ignore her roots and try to live like the others – wearing boots instead of moccasins, sleeping under a roof and between four walls rather than on the floor. Jessie’s riding skill came on account of the roots she is trying to hide.  Yet it may just be the thing that gains her acknowledgement with her classmates.

She is only able to do this however if she goes against her father’s wishes. Spirit of the West is the tale of one girl’s pride and determination to fit in, in spite of how she’s been raised. The story has a great moral, beautiful illustrations and ends nicely. Spirit of the West is also an interesting historical read that teaches young readers about the Appaloosa breed and doing what is right.

Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 2: Your Balance

You can read the review of Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 1: Your Position, here.

Horse Rider's Mechanic Workbook 2: Your Balance
Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 2: Your Balance

Jane Myers of Equiculture publishing has released another practical and helpful guide to improving your balance as a rider. Split into exercises for the walk, trot and canter, Horse Rider’s Mechanic Workbook 2 provides easy explanations, enough detail to carry out exercises, details of the benefits of doing them and helpful diagrams to further illustrate points.

The second book in this series, Your Balance is a book that will aid all horse riders. It is set out in a practical manner, starting with exercises at the walk that progress in difficulty. As you achieve one exercise, you are encouraged to move onto the next. These exercises are then followed by ones to be carried out at the trot and finally canter exercises.

Throughout the book there are references to articles provided on the HRM website for further reading and clarification.

Your Balance would be of great benefit to any rider wanting to improve their riding and their horse’s responsiveness. It would be particularly beneficial to someone who is teaching horse riding, as it provides practical, short lessons that can be consistently applied to help others improve. Highly recommended.

Horse Lover’s Math

March 2, 2016 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

I thought I had already posted about this, but can’t seem to find any proof of it on Equus Education!  I wanted to tell you about a great initiative, Horse Lover’s Math:

Are you looking for fun, educational content for horse crazy kids?  Check out Horse Lover’s Math (HLM).

It has been my idea to create horse related resources over at TeachersPayTeachers – even resources for general skills like mathematics.  As a horse fanatic, I would have loved resources at school that were horse focused whilst teaching me the skills I needed to learn!

Engaging Students at Horse Lover’s Math

Horse Lover’s Math is set up to help teachers and parents engage their horse crazy children who may not be so fond of math.  There are varying math levels covered for school aged children.

There are heaps of horse related articles with corresponding math questions.  There is also a place where students can check their answers.  Consider the likes of a horse’s weight, fitting a rug, height in hands and measuring out feeds.  If it involves horses and maths, chances are it’s been covered on the HLM site!  On top of this, horse related math products can be purchased in the HLM store – a great idea and an incredible horse related niche that can be turned into a career!

As well as free resources and those you can purchase, you can also subscribe as a member to the site.  This is just another way to add value for visitors and to also generate income for the creator!

Hannah and Chris: Before the Circuit by Kim Ablon Witney

February 28, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I haven’t read this series by Kim Ablon Witney yet, but I really enjoyed The Pefect Distance so was keen to check this one out when I found it free on Kindle!

Before the Circuit by Kim Ablon Witney
Before the Circuit by Kim Ablon Witney

A short read, Before the Circuit introduces the reader to Hannah and Chris, two horse riders from very different backgrounds with different ambitions in life. Hannah lives with her mother and receives financial support from a wealthy but somewhat estranged father. This helps to cover her riding lessons on a horse that she consistently rides, but has no idea how to look after – there are grooms for that.

In spite of this, Hannah is a hard worker and gets good grades in school, having been accepted into a good university. In the break between school and university, she is dismayed to find that her entrepreneur father has organised for her to go on a 7 week show circuit with her handful of a gelding.

Not only is she to ride him, she is to look after him – muck out his stall, feed and water him, tack him up – things she has never done before. It’s going to be an interesting ‘break’!

Chris Kern has worked his way up in the horse world. He has talents and looks – something that attracts him to most females in the industry. In spite of this, Chris has to work hard for his results.  He also needs to keep the owner of the horses he rides in a satisfied state. He is all too aware that if he loses Harris’ support, he won’t have talented horses to ride.

Before the Circuit

This book is a great introduction to the life of two individuals who feature in Summer Circuit; as an added bonus readers are treated to the first three chapters of Summer Circuit.

This prequel was an interesting read, I just found at times the language a little too coarse. Otherwise a great introduction to the two main characters of this series by Kim.

Using Horse Affiliate Programs

February 26, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

For those of you out there with horse websites, are you aware of the programs on offer to generate income via your website?

If you are providing information particularly, you may find that you benefit from a lot of loyal readers – readers who may be interested in products you’re happy to promote.

Consider:

  • Horse books
  • Saddlery
  • Horse care products
  • Horse riding clothes

If you do a search online, chances are you’ll find a longer list of possible options!  This means you can pick and choose, find what works for you and focus on products that you believe your readers would benefit from.

Affiliate programs can be a great way to build up a residual income – particularly if you’re already investing a lot of time and effort into the content of your blog.  Why not provide extra options for your readers? Just don’t go overboard!
