The Calm Before the Storm

September 3, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently contacted about the possibility of reading and reviewing this first book in the Triple Crown Trilogy. Always being up for new books, I was quick to say yes.

The Calm Before the Storm by Kimberley Campbell

This novel by Kimberley Campbell is an entertaining and enlightening read about one family’s aim to get their horse ready for the Kentucky Derby. Sounds simple, right? Wrong!

The reader is first introduced to the young colt Storm on the night that he is born. His owner Mr. Schilling has gone to great depths to get this colt and he is excited about his racing possibilities. Through careful pedigree researching and organising just the right stallion, Mr. Schilling is able to get his mare Storm Minstrel bred to a stallion that he believes will result in a foal with an incredible pedigree.

As the young colt grows, he shows promise. It is only as unforeseeable events result in him being sold off at auction, that the colt’s future becomes questionable.

Unaware of George Schilling or his careful plans, Charlie Jenkins is battling life with her two children. Recently widowed, Charlie is finding it hard to come to grips with what life has thrown at her. With two friends who are desperate to pull her out of her depressed state, they organise to take Charlie out for a night on the town.

Although the idea is intimidating, Charlie agrees as the element of watching some horse racing draws her. She has a passion for horses.

A chance meeting with a two year old colt that seems to be as unhappy with life as she is results in Charlie losing her heart – and perhaps her common sense! On a whim she finds the horse is in a claimer race and feels that she must buy him. And so starts the journey of “Storm” towards learning to love racing again and the big race the Kentucky Derby.

The Calm before the Storm is an educational read that shows how a broken family can be restored through the love of a horse and a common goal. I learnt a lot and found it easy to read and enjoyable.

Equus Education Blog Hop: Equine Goals

September 2, 2015 by Christine Meunier 5 Comments

What are your Equine Goals?

Hi everyone! It’s time for another blog hop at Equus Education! Last month we had a look at Your Career for our blog hop. This month we’re going to explore the topic of Equine Goals.

Now this one is completely up to you with regards to what you want to post, it just must be focused around the topic of equine goals. You may want to list some goals that you have currently – and when you hope to achieve them! Or, you may like to talk about the importance of having equine goals.

You may like to suggest some great equine goals for other people to set, or equine goals that you have achieved previously.

1. Create a post on your site focused on Equine Goals.
2. Start the post by indicating that you’re taking part in a blog hop over at Equus Education (http://www.equus-blog.com/equus-education-blog-hop-equine-goals) and be sure to link Equus Education to the website address in brackets.
a. Write your post of around 200 – 800 words
3. That’s it! You’re welcome to then come to this post and leave a reply, indicating the website address of the post you’ve created in answer to this blog hop.

Equine Finance Partners

August 31, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I’ve recently been researching something for a client and came across a finance company that was consistently referencing horse businesses. This got me thinking about things that we need finance for in the horse industry.

Can you think of any?

  • a stallion
  • a share in a racehorse
  • a float
  • land
  • a truck

There are definitely some items that are horse related that can cost a lot and perhaps need finance.  So in this niche area, I got to thinking: what if there was a business out there that provided finance – specifically for the equine industry, or equine related products?

Lending money is risky business and it’s important to know that you’re going to get that money back (plus interest).  Having a particular focus in the equine industry could help financiers to determine if indeed what is intended to be bought with the loaned money, is a risk or a worthwhile investment that can be paid back in full.

Perhaps you have an interest in money and investing, and would consider it worth your while financing others’ interests in the horse industry – at a return rate, of course.

Equus Education Blog Hop: Your Career

August 23, 2015 by Christine Meunier 7 Comments

I’m going to start a series of blog hops with the view to raise awareness of this site – and yours! – and provide more information for those wanting to generate an equine career. How does it work?

  1. You create a post on your site titled Equus Education Blog Hop: ‘Your Career’. Be sure to put the name of your equine related career instead of ‘your career’, for example, Equus Education Blog Hop: Jockey.
  2. Start the post by indicating that you’re taking part in a blog hop over at Equus Education (http://equus-blog.com/equus-education-blog-hop-your-career) and be sure to link Equus Education to the website address in brackets.
  3. Answer the following questions:
    1. What is your horse related career?
    2. Where in the world can we find you? (Please at least list your country, you don’t have to put your address, just a general idea will do)
    3. Is your horse career able to be carried out in part online?
    4. Do you need a qualification to do your job?
    5. What’s the best thing about your job?
  4. That’s it! Five simple questions – you can answer them as in depth or succinctly as you wish. You’re welcome to then come to this post and leave a reply, indicating the website address of the post you’ve created in answer to this blog hop.

I’m going to aim for at least 10 other posts in reply to this blog hop, so take part and be sure to spread the word! I’ll start off with my chosen horse career first:

Equus Education Blog Hop: Educator, Horse Studies
What is your horse related career?
I have been an equine educator, particularly focusing on horse breeding courses at Certificate III and Diploma level.

Where in the world can we find you?
I am located in North East Victoria, Australia.

Is your horse career able to be carried out in part online?
Absolutely! Horses cannot be learned from books (or online media) alone, but it is possible to study them online at your own pace, get your resources online and even watch related videos. Many educational institutions these days offer free short courses online that relate to horses.

Do you need a qualification to do your job?
You do. Most educators have two in Australia. The first is the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which allows them to teach at a TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education). Generally the other qualification you need is at least the level qualification you are teaching.
For example, if I am teaching the Diploma of Horse Breeding, then I need to have already completed this training myself. It is possible to be an industry expert having worked in the horse breeding industry, and to then get your Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and to then teach people, but you need to be working alongside someone who has the qualification the students will receive at the completion of their course.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Getting to teach other people about an animal that I love, and seeing them land a job in the horse industry.

What careers have taken part so far?

2. Children’s Book Author over at Free Rein series
3. Writer over at Riding and Writing
4. Author at Linda Ballou Talking to You
5. Multiple Careers at NZ Pony Writer
6. Young Adults Author at Mara Dabrishus
7. Former Lawyer/Author at the Charity Thriller

Keep an eye out for the next blog hop, which will focus on equine goals!
