A Horse is a Horse – Of Course

January 14, 2015 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

A Horse is a Horse – of Course: A Guide to Equine Behaviour by Jane and Stuart Myers

This book that looks into horse behaviour, succinctly explains what any horse carer or owner should know about typical horse behaviour and needs. Jane and Stuart Myers have provided another informative book that should be read by any horse fan. It covers what horses are (and what they are not!) as well as horse behaviour and lifestyle.

In today’s society, horses are often utilised for pleasure or performance and the way in which we keep them differs vastly to what they are used to – or need! – in the wild. Domestication can result in digestive problems (colic, ulcers, laminitis) and stereotypic behaviours such as crib biting or box walking. Jane and Stuart look at what horses need to be comfortable and healthy, and explain why some methods of horse keeping do not provide this.

A Horse is a Horse is a straight forward read that has the potential to set many horse owners straight in a non accusing way. If you keep horses, you owe it to them to read this book and find out if there are ways that your management could be in need of adjustment – for your horses’ benefit.

Nevada Free

January 10, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

This book was a free download on Kindle after I did a search on ‘horse’ and I couldn’t resist! Any free horse book is worth getting, in my opinion!

Nevada Free by Nan Carder

Kennedy Blake lives a solitary life with her parents having passed on and her two siblings living their lives elsewhere. Although she is alone, she loves her life that is filled with cattle, dogs, horses and a 400 acre property.

At one point in her life, she thought it was going to be herself, a man and a family on the ranch. But an ultimatum with her fiancée left Kennedy heart broken and no longer interested in trusting men.

Ten years later and Garrett Hamilton is back in town on business, but also to reclaim the heart of the woman he loves. Nevada Free is a great mix of mystery, romance and western.

The story would have been a lot more to my liking however if it didn’t have so many grammatical errors and spelling issues. Changes in tense occurred not only in paragraphs, but also mid sentence, making the initial reading of the story somewhat difficult!

A Different Kind of Rug

January 9, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Horses often need protection from the elements and humans may rug to keep their horse warm, dry, clean or to protect a coat from the harsh sun.  I haven’t known of rugs that are fireproof and have high visibility elements before, though!  Check out this niche idea over at Hazard County.

Buying a Horse Property

January 8, 2015 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This book by the Equiculture team – Jane and Stuart Myers, covers the practicalities that need to be considered when shopping for and deciding to buy a horse property. The book takes a quick but informative look at what should be considered.

Buying a Horse Property by Jane and Stuart Myers

Topics covered include how lifestyle decisions can lead to purchasing a horse property and whether such an investment is a good one. For those interested in buying, the topics of the buyer’s budget, property location and size, facilities and layout, pastures and soil, natural features and much more are considered.

A checklist of questions to ask the vendor are included for those who are in the process of seeking out a property to buy.

Jane and Stuart are focused on sustainable horse properties and this book encourages such an outlook when looking to purchase a property. It contains a lot of valuable information and points readers to other resources where more information of value can be found. An insightful read from someone who hopes to put the information to good use in the future!
