Friday Feature: Educator

October 25, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

This week’s letter is E.  If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Dentist (Equine).

An educator is “a person who has the responsibility for delivering a horse-related program.  Job titles may include Coach, Instructor, Lecturer or Teacher.” – Australian Horse Industry Council.

Their job will generally involve:

  • Instructing an individual, small or large group of people
  • Teaching theory/practical
  • Making sure skills are able to be applied/carried out
  • Assessing competency
  • Writing resources
  • Keeping yourself current in industry knowledge and skills

In Australia if you’re teaching at a tertiary level, you will need a certificate IV in TAE (Training and Education) and a horse related qualification at or above the level you intend to teach.  If teaching at a university level, a degree and graduate diploma of education is required.

Many educators that are specialists in their field (nutrition, veterinary, photonics, etc) will have been studying and practicing in this field for years.

Mixing Horses, Travel and Vacations

October 22, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Where is Your Ideal Horse Holiday?

Author Natalie Keller Reinert knows a thing or two about horses.  In fact, she runs Equestrian Vacations for those who would like the ideal holiday with horses planned for them.

What a great idea!  I believe what could make this work so well is Natalie’s background in:

  • different disciplines of horses and riding – eventing, hunter/jumpers, racing
  • equestrian tourism
  • the horse industry

How wonderful to be able to use your knowledge, skills and contacts to design a custom made horse related holiday for other equestrian enthusiasts?

From Natalie’s site, it states:

“I create custom packages for the horseman in you. Experience the Bluegrass during Kentucky Derby week, with stable tours of some of the most famous Thoroughbred farms in the world. Journey to Italy and root on your favorite contrada as you take in the spectacle of the Palio. Visit the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and receive a private tour of the stables.”

If I am in a position to be chasing up my dream horse vacation in the future, who better to ask then someone to organises trips for a living? 🙂

“We gaze upon their quiet beauty, their natural elegance, and we are captivated. They see us softly, in gentle light… rewarding human companionship with strength, grace and intelligence. As they run through arenas and open fields, past mountains and seas, moving like the wind toward heaven, we travel with them, if only in our hearts.” – Author unknown

Emergency Evacuation Plan Resource

October 21, 2013 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Here in Australia it’s greatly warming up and the state of New South Wales has been under attack by fires.  Fires are one of a few natural disasters that horse owners should be prepared for – are you?

Horse and People created in 2011 a free resource/fact sheet with regards to an Emergency Evacuation Plan.  Why not take a look?  You can benefit greatly from free resources created by those in the know 🙂

Friday Feature: Dentist (Equine)

October 18, 2013 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

This week’s letter is D.  If you missed last week’s Friday Feature, take a look at Coaching (Horse Riding).

If Your Horse is Avoiding the bit, it could be a Tooth Issue

An equine dentist is a very specialised person in the horse industry.  If someone is carrying out work on horse teeth, they either need to be a qualified veterinarian, or a qualified equine dental technician.

The horse’s teeth generally need to be floated every 6 – 12 months.  In light of this, a full time dentist will need to have many clients to keep them consistently in work.  This may also provide the opportunity or need to travel interstate or internationally to build up a decent client base.

Their job will generally involve:

  • Checking over a horse’s teeth and rasping back any sharp edges
  • It could also however include removing teeth and needing to administer a sedative to relax a horse
  • A lot of travelling to horse properties

Last week I wrote a post on horses and accounting, having been made aware of DD Equine, a division of Duncan Dovico Accounting Practice.  Brad Purvis from Duncan Dovico has kindly taken the time to answer some questions about how his work relates to horses.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
About 20%
