Profile on Sharon Lenton: Thoroughbred Events Australia

July 17, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently connected with Sharon Lenton of Thoroughbred Events Australia.  She kindly agreed to be profiled about her work with horses.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I work full time so I spend nearly every spare moment doing horse related projects. I live, breathe and think horses all day every day

What is it exactly that you do?
I wear 3 hats: Thoroughbred Events Australia, The Thoroughbred Club and the Thoroughbred Girls. Let me break them down: To make it clear on who we are, I thought I would outline exactly what each of our pages are:

  1. Thoroughbred Events Australia (TEA) attracts all people interested in the thoroughbred industry. We invite you to attend our events and meetings where we raise money for The Thoroughbred Club. TEA showcases all the action of the thoroughbred world so you feel part of this exciting industry.
  2. The Thoroughbred Club Australia (TTC) showcases off the track horses at their new career once they finish racing. We sponsor, promote and attend various off the track thoroughbred events around Australia.
  3. Thoroughbreds Girls (TG) group invites girls in the thoroughbred industry around Australia to connect with other like-minded girls. TG will discuss challenging issues in the industry so as to be a strong cohesive voice for women. We also encourage TG to attend specific race days and take tables at thoroughbred events as a united group.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full-time professional and earning a liveable income?
I have been doing this for 10 years and the answer to date is no. In saying this it would only take 1 sponsor to see my worth and a dream could be a reality.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
Definitely passion, dedication with plenty of blood, sweat and tears. You need to grow a thick skin which I am still growing!!!! But really I visualise a lot and work out how I can make my vision possible. It takes a good team to give you support and prop you up on the downs.

Favourite horse memory?
Hard one. There are many. Having a horse run on Melbourne Cup day and was leading all the way down the straight. I was having a heart attack as it was my turn to do the speech. Photo over the line for fourth!!!

Right now on the Thoroughbred Club page we are running a competition for Horse & Handler. The photos being sent in toast your heart. I love seeing them and seeing how loved all of them are. We have taken promoting off the track horses to every person showing their much loved animal. Just beautiful.

Last Saturday goes as one with our first Thoroughbred Girls No. 1 syndicate having it first start at Rosehill in the main race of the day – Kia Winter Stakes and putting in a gallant 5th fresh from a spell. Many more memories to come with this horse. I could go on for days.

Future goals?
Definitely to be able to sponsor and showcase more horses around Australia with a focus for those horses that have left the racing industry to have a new career. We have amazing sponsors around Australia who are all excited to get out there to present. Just need to raise more money. But we certainly sponsor what we can.

We really need to start planning but due to Covid we are restricted right now hence our on-line competitions.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
Oh it has to be the amazing horse. To see their strength, endurance and beauty. Next it would be to see the love people have for these incredible animals. And lastly, getting fabulous girls together to have a great day out whether at the races, polo or show jumping, etc. I am truly blessed.

Abandoned by Angela Dorsey

July 13, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have really enjoyed the Angela Dorsey books I have read so far.  So naturally I was pleased to find another of her books available as a free download recently!  Abandoned is the title of the recent download.

Although the first part of this story has no sign of horses, this changes as young Lauren is encouraged to spend the summer with her two cousins. The nearly thirteen year old feels that someone may be following her. When she confides in her father, Lauren finds herself anticipating a boring summer in the country. Lauren’s father wants her safely away until the issue is resolved.

An unexpected surprise awaits her and suddenly Lauren’s summer is looking up.  With the opportunity to learn to ride and care for a horse, Lauren enjoys her new equine journey. Her cousins are keen to share what they know about horses. As Lauren’s confidence in riding grows, she is keen to exercise some independence on horseback.

A ride by herself results in Lauren finding an abandoned property.  As she investigates, it seems the derelict place has a history that is worth knowing.  Abandoned is a good title for this novel that focuses on a middle grade young girl and her sense of abandonment that started in an earlier generation.

Sister School Business Education Program

July 10, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I am so thankful to still have work amongst the COVID-19 situation. But with the current environment, it appears there are many, many entrepreneurial opportunities!  One such in North East Victoria is the ten week Sister School Business Education Program.

Sister School is a ten-week business education program that provides the practical knowledge and support needed to start or grow your business. Whether you have an idea, too many ideas, an existing business or an early stage business, Sister School is for you!

I would love to sign up and check it out but have too much on currently. I have just finished Grace Lever’s free Five Day Challenge and am working on turning my Wealthy Christians ebook into a course. July is Camp Nano and I have also just finished Free Rein #10. I am working on another book over July also.

And then next week I am doing another free challenge – Amazon Ad Challenge Schedule & Prize Giveaway. July is busy but I love all these chances to learn new skills!

Sister School

But back to the education program this post is about. It’s aimed at helping women turn a business idea into a business.

So how to contextualise this to horses?  There are so many careers that can relate back to horses!  And many of these I believe could be set up as a small business:

  • equine writer – author of fiction or non fiction; journalism, blogs, articles, etc
  • horse photographer
  • equine related artist
  • social media marketing / website design for horse businesses
  • graphic design

In the midst of this climate where many have lost work and been made redundant, maybe the above program is just what you need.  And if not, perhaps you may know of someone who could benefit from it?  Be sure to spread the word.

A Warrior In Training: A Unicorn’s Courage and Confidence To Face Any Challenge

June 29, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently I downloaded a new horse book to read and review.  It’s titled A Warrior In Training: A Unicorn’s Courage and Confidence To Face Any Challenge (The Last Unicorn). In this short story by Jaclyn Dee, Albion the last unicorn is struggling to recognise his worth as an individual.

Luckily Albion has a wonderful best friend – Mira the mermaid. Mira encourages Albion every opportunity she gets. As Albion puts faith in himself and his abilities, he discovers just how much a unicorn can do.

A Warrior In Training: A Unicorn’s Courage and Confidence To Face Any Challenge (The Last Unicorn) is a short story with a valuable lesson for children. The cover illustration helps readers to visualise Albion and his world.

Whilst this story has a good message – and features a unicorn! – there were many, many changes of tense. These occurred within a paragraph and even mid sentence which I found to be rather distracting. Assuming the book is aimed at young readers I would be concerned that while they may be learning a good lesson, they would also be learning incorrect grammar.  Otherwise, this story is a good one for young readers and unicorn fans.

Crio Online Equine Management Software

June 26, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Another recent connection on LinkedIn referenced Crio Online. I had a look at the website and discovered that Crio Online is actually an equine management software. How cool!

What is appealing from the getgo about this setup is that it is run online. And due to different levels of ‘access’, you can allow employees, vets and farriers to make entries in regard to your horses. I think this could be quite a handy benefit!

An added bonus is the fact that you can sign up for a free trial within minutes – without needing to hand over credit card details. This was an easy process and suddenly I have ‘2 horses’ that I can edit the details of digitally. You can:

  • add a photo
  • list the dam and sire
  • put in training details
  • indicate brands and markings on a template

This appears to be quite a comprehensive equine management software. So if you are curious to see whether it would work for you, sign up for a free trial so you can check it out.  This may just be the best and easiest way for you to test it with your horses and their details.

There are many different resources out there to build your horse knowledge and skills. There are also tools to help you run or manage an equine business. Crio Online may be one such tool!  Curious about others on offer? Be sure to check out the free resources section of Equus Education.
