Stetson (Iron Horse 1) by Danielle Norman

May 18, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Stetson was a book I recently downloaded on Kindle to read and review.  London Kelly is a simple country woman.  The thirty year old finds her life gets a whole lot more complicated when her father dies. Now the eldest of three girls is feeling the pressure of running her father’s ranch.  Stetson is the first book in the Iron Horse series.

London has the help of her devoted, hard working sisters but finds she is battling a male chauvinistic attitude that wants to tear her down.  The three compliment each other on the ranch. London runs the books while Holland looks after the horses and riding business.  Then Paris handles the organic growing and cooking.

Things are manageable until a pasture fire and some other target acts start to ruin the business.  London would be thankful for Deputy McManus’ assistance in the case, except for one thing: the recent one night stand she had with him.

Having had a crush on the man since high school, she is devastated by his playboy actions.  It seems easier to stay away, even though the Deputy disagrees entirely.

Stetson (Iron Horse #1)

And so starts the romance and the mystery solving. Reading Stetson was pretty enjoyable overall. I don’t appreciate swearing in books and was on alert as I felt the author’s words before the book contained quite a bit of this!  This story followed as I anticipated, with much language that I didn’t feel was really necessary.  This aside, it was quite an enjoyable read.

Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey

May 11, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

No doubt like many others, we are in the middle of home schooling children alongside work and life’s other juggles. Our daughter has a book that is read each week at school and activities that relate to this. Recently there was another book within her study pack for the week. It was a gift from the local newsagents for each child in her class. It was a copy of Thelma the Unicorn.  Another horse book for the collection – thanks Edgars Newsagency!

Thelma is a horse that dreams of being a unicorn. Although her best friend Otis indicates he likes her just the way she is, Thelma dreams of being more. A carrot in the paddock allows the horse to fulfil a dream of being a unicorn as it poses for a horn on her head. Then an accident with a truck full of paint and glitter turns her into the most beautiful unicorn.

And so starts Thelma’s journey to fame as locals fall for the beautiful unicorn. Thelma finds in time though that being as beautiful as she desires isn’t all that she had thought it would be.

Thelma the Unicorn is a lovely rhyming tale for young readers. It explores the fact that we should embrace who we are and learn to love this. The illustrations are engaging for children and the simple, rhyming sentences make it easy for them to follow.

SpinalVets

May 8, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Recently at work I was preparing a new unit for students. One external link that I hadn’t noticed before led to the website for SpinalVets.

Now this led to a site promoting Ian Bidstrup and his equine work. About 15 years ago I was introduced to Ian’s work whilst studying horse breeding.  It seems he is still very actively involved in the horse industry.

“SpinalVets are a relatively new breed of Veterinarians who have dual university qualifications in Veterinary Science and Chiropractic Science. Often SpinalVets also have post graduate qualifications in Acupuncture as well as training in Osteopathic techniques. They are very positioned to provide a holistic approach to animal health, being able to provide both traditional and alternative or “intergrative” veterinary medicine/surgery.

This site is owned by Dr Ian Bidstrup and is principally here to provide the horse and dog owning public with knowledge of common spine related animal conditions which are found to be clinically responsive to neurological “re-programming”, as can be done via spinal adjustments and acupuncture. We hope you find the content both enlightening and useful.”

I love coming across new horse career websites.  This is especially so if they are promoting a niche or new market in the equine industry.  There really is just so much that you can consider if you want an equine related career.

If you have an interest in pursuing veterinary science focused on horses, then perhaps SpinalVets may also be of interest.

“A horse is the projection of peoples’ dreams about themselves – strong, powerful, beautiful – and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.” – Pam Brown

Disaster at Roosevelt Ranch by Elise Faber

May 4, 2020 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I am so thankful that I don’t seem to be anywhere near running out of free horse books to read and review on Kindle! Disaster at Roosevelt Ranch was one such recent download. This horse adult romance was an entertaining read as I found I had some time up my sleeve over a couple of days.

The novel has an engaging start and moves at a fast pace.

Kelly knows her life is about to be turned upside down. Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant will do that.  The hard working woman knows she needs to bring it to the attention of her ex, but finds that hard to do.  After all, he’s suddenly no longer around.

But his just as good looking twin is and it looks like he could be staying for awhile. Kelly knows she can’t afford to lose her heart to another Rososevelt man, but Justin’s personality is nothing like his brother’s. And that draws him to Kelly even more.

Disaster At Roosevelt Ranch

I loved the first comment in this novel regarding the stables and Kelly.  Her love of horses is soon outlined in the story and eventually the reader learns how much they were her life.  That was before her selfish mother took away the opportunity.

Disaster at Roosevelt Ranch explores how easily an unplanned pregnancy can occur, looks at family ties and overcoming mistakes. For some potentially angst filled topics, it was a light and enjoyable read.  And the romance aspect was nicely wrapped up at the end.

Just a quick post for you all.  This one is focusing specifically on free horse resources by Equus Education for anyone to download and utilise.

I recently shared some free equine resources I have up on Equus Education via EE’s Facebook page.  This was in line with the fact that I am currently working from home and home schooling children.  It can be fun – even difficult – to keep them engaged.

So I thought for the horse fanatics out there, that some free electronic horse resources may be welcome! So why not download and use these to keep your children entertained and then spread the word? 🙂

Electronic resources are definitely of benefit when you’re limited on where you can go and what you can do. In the current COVID-19 situation, be sure to utilise free resources on offer. And of course, share them with others who may also be able to utilise them!
