LOTE and Horses: Careers and Education

December 28, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently listening to a podcast from my church and the speaker made reference to a woman within their organisation. Her role related to language other than English (LOTE) churches. And I suddenly got to thinking about LOTE and horses. Horses can be found almost anywhere around the world.

That is, excluding Antarctica and unfortunately the island of Rodrigues where my husband is from! In many different countries, different languages are spoken. And yet the task of caring for and looking after horses is the same no matter what the language.

LOTE and Horses

I have touched on the concept of a horse dictionary before and think LOTE and horses could be explored further. What if there were courses, Podcasts, resources and other such tools to help those who speak a language other than English to learn horse terms in English, or another language? It would open up their opportunities relating to work. If they already know horses, then learning another language will help them to pursue horse work in other countries outside of their native home.

I remember a Korean couple working with me at the racetrack. They definitely knew horses, but their limited English slowed things down with regards to communication. It was difficult for staff and the manager to communicate effectively. And although this didn’t stop work being done, it did make the process less efficient. Having even an application that you could turn to, type in your term or phrase and then have it translated to other languages could greatly help international workers! Not to mention their colleagues and bosses.

Of course, creating a generic course that could then be managed by different teachers who are competent in various languages would be a great creation, too. Students could undertake the same course, but have different teachers around the world to help translate from various languages. LOTE and horses I believe would fill a gap. Especially when there are people currently working to unify horse qualifications around the world. This will help to determine who is at what skill level in various countries.

Sola Eclipsed by Angela Dorsey and Marina Miral

December 24, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Every book of Angela Dorsey’s that I have read feature horses in a fantasy role. Sola Eclipsed is no different. Thirteen year old Sola lives in an interesting world. Humans are lowest on the pecking order; Shadow Elves are highest. Somewhere in between are dwarves and other creatures.

Sola and her grandmother are struggling to make a living in their world. Humans are allowed to trade in town but they make very little money and the rent is due to Landlord Stye, an evil dwarf. Sola is devastated that she can’t help her grandmother. She has no aptitude for the beautiful carvings that her elderly grandmother can create to sell. And it seems she is not much use for anything else.

Going against her grandmother’s wishes, Sola follows her to town one morning. She is amazed at the array of creatures and people – all unsmiling, unkind – that make their way to town. In amongst the melee she finds herself suddenly to blame for a Shadow Elf falling off his horse. Sola knows he could have her killed or imprisoned and the fear spurns her into action. But when she interacts with the beautiful red horse that he was riding, she finds she has some connection with the animal.

Sola is grateful to escape that day with her life. But it seems she can’t hide from the commotion she created on the way to town that day.

A sudden chance at employment has her in amongst those she so desperately wishes to avoid. And yet… it seems that this chance meeting is an opportunity for young Sola to utilise the connection she feels with not only one beautiful red horse, but many horses.

Sola Eclipsed (Talismans of Thunder #1)

Sola Eclipsed is just the start of this young teenager’s story. It is made up of fantasy, adventure and some mystery thrown in. Add horses to the mix and young horse fans are bound to enjoy the start to the Talismans of Thunder series.

H5P Content for Horse Businesses

December 19, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

At work we’re undergoing a change to the Learning Management System that we use to provide content to students. In the training that I had to undertake, there was a reference to H5P activities. Now I wasn’t familiar with what these were, so did a little search online and came across https://h5p.org/ where you can create and share rich HTML5 content and applications. Cool!  And of course I got thinking: h5p content for horse businesses.

So how does this relate to horses? Well the activities that you can create are varied. They may include:

  • Check lists
  • Drop and drag text or images
  • Matching images in a memory game – I can already picture using this one to have students match the word bay with an image of a bay horse and cover the colours of horses
  • Interactive videos
  • Presentations with interactive slides

H5P Content for Horse Businesses

Perhaps you’re providing a horse related course. Maybe you want a presentation to promote a service or product that relates to horses.

These activities and applications that you create can be utilised in Moodle (the learning platform I use at work) on WordPress and Drupal. There are about 40 different activities and games that you can utilise to help put across some information or test someone’s knowledge on a given topic.

Now on their site, you can create a free account. I’m always up for free resources that you can use to create products or resources to benefit others! If you are big on online resources, then why not check out the H5P website and brainstorm how it could help your equine related business?

Wild Pony Island by L.B. Shively

December 17, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Wild Pony Island by L.B. Shively is a short story for young horse enthusiasts. With the main focus a young boy stranded on an island and a pony stallion, it is bound to capture their imagination. Young Simon misses his trips out in the dinghy with his papa. Because his father is sick, he finds that he is sad and cooped up inside when he’s desperate to be out on the water.

In a rash decision, Simon decides to take the dinghy out by himself one night, promising himself that he’ll be back before his parents notice he is gone. But things quickly go awry. Simon finds himself stranded on an island, cold, wet, hungry and alone. Or so he thinks.

A pony stallion seems to arrive out of nowhere, pointing Simon toward a place where he can be protected from the elements. The young boy makes a quick shelter and then considers how he is going to get back to his family.

He knows enough to make a fire.  Although he is able to dry off and ward away the cold, he is hungry and also thirsty. At the right time the stallion pony captures his attention and draws him away toward water. In time, he shows the young boy where he may secure food on the island, too. It seems that this wild pony island is a place where one wild pony is able to look out for the boy and help him to meet his needs.

In time Simon is surprised and pleased to find that he is not alone.  Thankfully he is found and will be brought safely home. As he leaves with his father, Simon is amazed to find that it is not just one pony that lives on the island. There is a herd to accompany the stallion that had so carefully looked out for him. Wild Pony Island is a short, entertaining read full of adventure.

The National Jockeys Trust

December 14, 2018 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

A recent look at the Australian Jockey’s Association led to looking at the National Jockeys Trust website. We live in an imperfect world and tragedies happen. For jockeys, this can often come in the way of a fall from a horse that renders them incapable of continuing their riding career.

Suddenly they are unable to earn a living and it may even impact on a spouse and children. The income earner is now not bringing in funds and the family struggles to meet their daily needs. The National Jockeys Trust has been set up to help families that are in need because of an accident a jockey had whilst race riding.

I love to see initiatives like this. There is a financial need – through not fault of the jockey’s own – and it is met by the generosity of people who provide funds to this trust. The details on the website indicate how much the trust has already been able to help those in need:

The National Jockeys Trust has helped over three hundred jockeys with equipment and resources
to assist them during and after their recovery.

200 riders are injured a year.  $3.3 million in assistance has been provided to seriously injured jockeys and their families.  Apparently 89% of race falls result in the fallen jockey needing assistance.

You can find out more about the statistics on the website.  There are also details of how they help those in need.

This is another opportunity to consider your equine industry and needs that could be met in it. Is there a trust that could be set up to help equine workers that have fallen on hard times due to an accident in the industry? Could the generosity of others help to build up and also meet the needs of an industry?
