Equine Permaculture

October 28, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

We live in a world that has exhaustible resources. Consequently, the concept of sustainable living is important to many and more commonly being put into practice. Even in the horse world there is a focus on equine permaculture. Many of you may be familiar with the initiatie, Equiculture – a business that focuses on equine sustainable living.

I have recently come across another horse related initiative that focuses on this. Equine Permaculture has a tagline of:

Responsible horse keeping and sustainable living via permaculture.

For those who aren’t familiar with the word permaculture, it is a combination of two words – permanent and agriculture. The idea is that people give conscious thought to the design of agriculture so that it is created and managed in a way that is diverse, stable and has “resilient natural ecosystems.” The idea is that people work with nature, not against it.

Equine Permaculture

How does permaculture help the horse owner? Well it helps in particular the soil that grows the plants and grasses our horses like to eat! It’s about restoring soil to the best quality it can be, so that things grow well. This helps the horse owner to cut down on feed costs and for our horses to live as naturally as possible.

For those who are able to help manage the land their horses are on, it is worth learning about equine permaculture! There is a lot that can be done proactively to improve a property and therefore make it more productive – and appealing – for horses. Take a look at the equine permaculture website and get reading! There is a wealth of information to help you learn more.

If this particular topic is of interest to you, then you may find reading and studying of benefit. From here it is definitely possible to look into educating others – and turning it into a horse related career.

Horse Applications

October 21, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I recently saved a pin that focused on the best horse applications (horse apps). In fact, it was this horse application pin that first led me to the Frugal Horsewoman’s website. Amongst all the applications that are available out there for use, many are free and others need to be paid for.

This is perhaps another area that can be entertained for those wanting to start up their own business. I see two potential options:

  1.  You develop and sell your own horse applications. This can be a great way to establish a passive income online. You create the app (or apps) and sell them for a small fee. Assuming they’re of great benefit to the horse community, you should find that you are consistently making sales.
  2. Another way to go about this is to source already established horse applications that are selling well. Contact the creators/owners and work out some sort of a commission deal with them. If you establish yourself online as the place to go for horse applications, then in time people will be approaching you about selling their product! You provide the platform, charge a commission and each time a sale of someone else’s horse app is made, you benefit financially, too!
Horse Applications: do you have an Idea that Others Would Embrace?

Horse Applications

There are many, many different horse products that can be created and sold online. The most appeal to me are those that require the work once and then can be sold many times over. The idea of a horse passive income is just so appealing! If it is for you too, then consider the idea of creating a horse app or two.

Brainstorm what tools you feel horse owners, riders, trainers and breeders could most benefit from. Then think about how you could develop this into an application and make it available for purchase. Horse apps could be your horse business!

Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry
Equine Psychotherapy is a Growing Industry

If you have an interest in equine psychotherapy, then you may be interested to know about the Equine Psychotherapy Institute.  For those interested in studying equine assisted psychotherapy training there are two options:

  1. Students who are already Registered Psychotherapists, Counsellors or Mental Health Practitioners such as Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Mental Health Social Workers and Mental Health Nurses, who are ‘in relationship with horses’ (whether a beginner or very experienced horse-people), and are wanting to offer Equine Assisted Therapy or Psychotherapy services. This group has Mental Health Qualifications and Registrations.
  2. Students who are passionate horse-people, may have qualification in teaching, coaching or management, have a keen interest in helping others grow and change, and are wanting to learn more about powerful processes and experiential learning with horses. This group do not have Mental Health Registration.

You can enroll into a course to become qualified via the equine psychotherapy institute website.  You can also search for qualified practitioners around Australia.

It’s great to see that training and qualifications are offered to both professionals in the mental health field and those who have skills with horses.  The area of psychotherapy with horses needs both kinds of individuals.  If you are a person who fits both of these categories, then even better!

Horses are wonderfully honest.  Horses are a great tool to help people.  This is in spite of their intimidating size.  They can help emotionally and physically and to learn skills, like team work.  Psychotherapy with horses is an interesting health area that is developing at a great speed.  It’s wonderful to find places that offer training and qualifications for those interested.

Horse Patterns and Residual Income

September 30, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I was recently having a look on Pinterest at horse related images and posts. One really creative picture caught my eye. It was the outline of a horse, made from folded pages in a book. How cool! And the page that the image linked to was a horse pattern for sale on Etsy. Unique!

What could you make into Horse Patterns to Sell?
What could you make into Horse Patterns to Sell?

It seems that this clever person has determined exactly how you need to fold a certain number of pages in a book to create the silhouette of a horse! Further to this, she has turned it into a pattern for sale so others can do the exact same thing – genius!

Now horse patterns were honestly not something I had considered with regards to an equine career! And yet, these can be an incredible way to generate a residual income relating to horses. You create the pattern once and sell it many times and generate money each time you sell the pattern. Great!

Horse Patterns

So perhaps this idea appeals to you, but you don’t know how to create different horse silhouettes from folding paper. Well, are there other things horse related that patterns can be made for? Some quickly off the top of my head:

  • Folding patterns on paper – horse shapes in origami, horse silhouettes in books
  • Patterns for checkers to put on the rumps of horses for shows
  • Patterns for horse related clothes such as jodhpurs and riding shirts
  • Patterns for rugs
  • Patterns to create horse jumps

I am sure that are many things that are horse related that horse patterns could also be made for. It’s just a question of them being thought up and then created. And from here, they can be turned into a digital product for sale so others can benefit from them. If you’re enthused by this idea, you may also want to look into the concept of an online horse store.

“Fascination with horses predated every other single thing I knew. Before I was a mother, before I was a writer, before I knew the facts of life, before I was a schoolgirl, before I learned to read, I wanted a horse.” ― Jane Smiley
