Equine Events Planner

August 5, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I wonder how many careers I can come across that could focus on a niche area of horses? 🙂  I was on Facebook and saw an advert for a course on Event Planning and immediately thought: equine events planner!

Are you the kind of person who loves attending events?  More so, do you enjoy planning and organising them?  Then perhaps you could turn this passion into a career.  Perhaps you could even turn it into an equine-focused career.  This would definitely be a niche area of the events planning industry!

Equine Events Planner: what Events would you like to Organise?
Equine Events Planner: what Events would you like to Organise?

There are many people out there who make a living from organising events for others.  They know where to look for venues to hire, which caterers to use and what decorations to add that special touch.

Why couldn’t a business be set up that does this with an equine focus?  You could cater to many different events:

  • birthdays
  • Christmas break ups
  • special race days
  • equine educational events
  • horse sales
  • the launching of a horse business
  • stud open days
  • stallion parade days

The list goes on!  There are a multitude of events that could be planned and not all of them require being in one room.  Perhaps you could help to organise an equine field trip for students or employees on behalf of an educational institution or business.

Undertaking a course on events planning and then utilising this qualification, the skills learned and potential contacts gained could help you to start up your own business.  With the right kind of marketing and a bit of brain storming, I’ve no doubt an Equine Events Planner business could be created!  Perhaps this niche area appeals to you and your skills.  Why not take the leap and pursue it?

Equine Parasitology and Anthelmintics

August 3, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

There are people who are fascinated by parasites in particular species. Whether dogs, cats or horses, there are individuals who study the life cycles of parasites and their affects.  If you have an interest in equine parasitology – the study of parasites in horses – and the use of anthelmintics – agents used to kills parasites, then perhaps you would like to pursue this as a career that can benefit the horse industry.

Do you Have an Interest in Equine Parasitology?
Do you Have an Interest in Equine Parasitology?

People are needed to study the parasite life cycle in horses. This information can then be used to determine when to best target parasites by worming horses.  For those who study the active ingredients in wormers, worming pastes for horses can then be determined.

Someone has had to determine what kills particular worms. Did you know that pyrantel and praziquantel are best to kill of tapeworm? Did you know that particular times of the year are best to eradicate bot fly larvae?

For those who have an interest in this side of horse health, then perhaps an Equine Science or Animal Science degree is of interest.  Try to find a course with a focus on horse health and parasitology. There will always be parasites. In fact, this could become an increasing concern if people don’t learn to only worm when needed. If this doesn’t occur, then worms can develop resistance – this has already been recorded with some active ingredients. As these worms survive and breed, the resistance is passed on and the worm burden can greatly increase.

The areas of anthelmintics and equine parasitology have many different focus points. Researchers and university lecturers are two potential horse related jobs within these areas.  Often the two can be combined.

Horsi – Australian Horse Social Network

July 18, 2016 by Christine Meunier 1 Comment

Awhile back I wrote a post about a social networking site for horse lovers – Horse Networking.  Sadly this site seems to no longer exist!  I have just come across one aimed at Australian horse people and businesses, however.  It is called Horsi.

Horsi – the Network for Horse Lovers – is free to use and quick to sign up to.  It is designed so people have a profile, can add their equine business(es) and even add horse details.

Horsi: would you use a Horse Social Networking Site?
Horsi: would you use a Horse Social Networking Site?

A quick search on the site shows that they have different categories for horses businesses to advertise in:

  • Agistment
  • Arena Hire
  • Farrier
  • Floats and Trucks
  • Lessons and Coaching
  • Photographer
  • Veterinarian

And there are many more.  Horsi looks to be me, to be a great place to establish a presence online and connect with other horse people who may want to do business with you.  Or, they may be able to help you find the horse business connection you’re looking for.

You are able to connect with people and ‘follow’ them.  And of course, you can keep up to date on the Horsi news via their Facebook page.

If you’re a horse fan in Australia, then this site may be worth looking into.  It seems to be just setting up, but also a great chance to connect with other Australians who love horses and are perhaps doing business in the horse field.

If you have a horse business in Australia, then it can’t hurt you to further your online presence.  You can do this very quickly by signing up to Horsi.

For those who love internet marketing; perhaps there is still a niche for other horse networking sites.  This is particularly so as this site seems to cater to Australians.  There are plenty of other countries out there with many horse business people, horse fans and internet use.  Food for thought.

Profile On: Katherine Bloomquist, Equine Law

June 16, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Katherine Bloomquist practices law and focuses on the niche area of equine law.  She was kind enough to answer some questions here on Equus Education about Bloomquist Law and in what way her work relates to horses!

Ms. Bloomquist is recognized as a leader in animal law and equine law. She is a frequent speaker at the National Equine Law Conference in Kentucky, the Equine Law Conference in California, and is regularly published on this subject.

What is it exactly that you do?
I am an equine lawyer. I handle matters and cases involving horses. On the corporate side I create entities for horse businesses and draft contracts such as releases, boarding, breeding, purchase and sale, etc. I also handle land use ( zoning and feedlot and Conditional use permits) as well as litigation involving horses!

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
I completed 4 years of college and 3 years of law school. Thereafter I developed a focus in equine law!

Favourite horse memory?
Competing at Morven Park at a preliminary horse trial one star – long format!

Future goals?
I much enjoy how I continue to learn about the nuances of the differences of the various sport horses and the people in those different disciplines.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
Barn visits – being out of the office and at a horse farm to see my clients do their thing!

Profile On: Anita of Get Up and Gallop

June 6, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Anita Marchesani of Get Up and Gallop was kind enough to answer some questions about her business and horses.

How much of your day/week is related to horses?
I agist my horse and live in the suburbs, so it takes around 3 hours of my day to drive out, get him sorted, ride, put him away and drive home. I have to admit, one of the driving factors in considering starting my own business Get Up and Gallop was that it would give me a freedom to choose when in the day I wanted to ride, and not be forced to do so in the evenings after a day in an office somewhere!

Lucky for me, the way I have always run my businesses, I ride or train my horse around 4-5 days a week.

What is it exactly that you do?
I’m a business coach and mentor helping other small business owners learn how to effectively market and sell for their business. I trust that my clients are already experts at what they do- equine massage, dog trainers, retailers, riding coaches etc- I’m here to help them find more clients, grow their business, and increase their profits.

Funnily enough, to do that you need to invest in marketing, and learn how to sell! Previously, I’ve created two equine retail businesses- one that failed, one that was a raging success and that I sold 2 years ago. That business – Bit Bank Australia – is still growing with the new owner, and I’m very proud to see her continue to help riders across Australia and New Zealand.

In this field of work, is it possible to be a full time professional and earning a liveable income?
Yes, of course. In my current business, and in my previous retail business. With the first business I started that was not profitable, it took me critically analysing it, and actively learning new skills to be able to take a loss building business and turn it into a profitable 6 figure venture in less than 4 years.

Its hard work, its always hard work, but yes, you can make money and a good living, working with horses. Now I am helping my clients who work with horses do the same.

What are the general steps taken to be employed in such a role?
Work. Hard work. Discipline. The dedication to jump out of bed every day ready to get stuck into it. Working with a coach or mentor to help you learn the skills you currently lack, and to support you as a sounding board when problems arise.

There are far easier ways to earn the cash than creating your own business. But for me, the rewards are far greater. The thing is, you have to be prepared to suffer for it! And always, always keep learning.

Favourite horse memory?
Jumping steeplechase fences on a 4 star event horse when I was working as a groom in the UK for a professional event rider. Best fun ever!

Future goals?
Horse wise, I would love to take my Mojo pony to Medium dressage, but we have a lot of work to do before we do! Largely, my sitting trot!

Work wise, to be able to help a very select group of business owners grow, develop, and have fun in their businesses. Too many people choose to stay isolated and ignorant. There are no stupid questions, the only stupid thing is to NOT ask them. My clients ask ALL the questions, and that’s why they get the results they do, and it makes me so proud.

Best thing about your sport/profession?
For both – that there is always so much more to learn!
