Animal Welfare Scholarships, RSPCA

September 14, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have just been made aware of two scholarships that are on offer through the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Australia. Applications must be in by September 30.

Applicants must be students enrolled in a university or college in Australia, part or full time.  They must also be seeking funding for a project focused on animal welfare research.  Full details can be found at their website.

It looks like these two scholarships are annual, so if it’s something of interest to you but too short notice for this year, make a note of the site for next year!  There is always more research that can be done in the area of horse welfare.

Equus Education Blog Hop: Your Career

August 23, 2015 by Christine Meunier 7 Comments

I’m going to start a series of blog hops with the view to raise awareness of this site – and yours! – and provide more information for those wanting to generate an equine career. How does it work?

  1. You create a post on your site titled Equus Education Blog Hop: ‘Your Career’. Be sure to put the name of your equine related career instead of ‘your career’, for example, Equus Education Blog Hop: Jockey.
  2. Start the post by indicating that you’re taking part in a blog hop over at Equus Education (http://equus-blog.com/equus-education-blog-hop-your-career) and be sure to link Equus Education to the website address in brackets.
  3. Answer the following questions:
    1. What is your horse related career?
    2. Where in the world can we find you? (Please at least list your country, you don’t have to put your address, just a general idea will do)
    3. Is your horse career able to be carried out in part online?
    4. Do you need a qualification to do your job?
    5. What’s the best thing about your job?
  4. That’s it! Five simple questions – you can answer them as in depth or succinctly as you wish. You’re welcome to then come to this post and leave a reply, indicating the website address of the post you’ve created in answer to this blog hop.

I’m going to aim for at least 10 other posts in reply to this blog hop, so take part and be sure to spread the word! I’ll start off with my chosen horse career first:

Equus Education Blog Hop: Educator, Horse Studies
What is your horse related career?
I have been an equine educator, particularly focusing on horse breeding courses at Certificate III and Diploma level.

Where in the world can we find you?
I am located in North East Victoria, Australia.

Is your horse career able to be carried out in part online?
Absolutely! Horses cannot be learned from books (or online media) alone, but it is possible to study them online at your own pace, get your resources online and even watch related videos. Many educational institutions these days offer free short courses online that relate to horses.

Do you need a qualification to do your job?
You do. Most educators have two in Australia. The first is the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which allows them to teach at a TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education). Generally the other qualification you need is at least the level qualification you are teaching.
For example, if I am teaching the Diploma of Horse Breeding, then I need to have already completed this training myself. It is possible to be an industry expert having worked in the horse breeding industry, and to then get your Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and to then teach people, but you need to be working alongside someone who has the qualification the students will receive at the completion of their course.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Getting to teach other people about an animal that I love, and seeing them land a job in the horse industry.

What careers have taken part so far?
1. Equine Writer over at Horse Country
2. Children’s Book Author over at Free Rein series
3. Writer over at Riding and Writing
4. Author at Linda Ballou Talking to You
5. Multiple Careers at NZ Pony Writer
6. Young Adults Author at Mara Dabrishus
7. Former Lawyer/Author at the Charity Thriller

Keep an eye out for the next blog hop, which will focus on equine goals!

International Riders for Helmets Day

July 28, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I have posted about this event before and it’s coming around again for 2015, so I wanted to share details!  International Riders for Helmets Day is August 1st, 2015 (ironically the horse’s birthday in the southern hemisphere!).

What’s it all about?

What are the benefits to equestrians?

– The opportunity to be educated by retailers on the importance of wearing a properly fitted and secured, certified helmet.

– The opportunity to participate in helmet fitting demonstrations.

– The opportunity to purchase a helmet at a one-time special discount offered only on International Helmet Awareness Day.

Do you Utilise a Helmet when Riding?

– Riders4Helmets will host a series of live educational webinars on Riders4Helmets.com during the 2015 Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day. The webinars will feature a variety of experts in: Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion; Psychologists; Neuro Physiotherapists; Helmet Manufacturers (tips on correctly fitting a helmet); Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors; Leading Equestrians etc. Viewers will be able to ask “real-time” questions to these experts. Details of who the experts will be, along with the topics that they will discuss, will be available nearer the date.

Locate your nearest retailer/tack shop at www.riders4helmets.com/ihad (participating retailer map).

A Horse Riding Career

July 22, 2015 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

You can Improve Your Riding Skills Daily

Planning on getting a career riding horses for a living? If you have access to a horse right now, you may want to consider checking out Strides for Success.

I posted about this idea originally because I thought what a great thing – to get riding lessons and advice via audio that you can utilise whilst riding!

I have also signed up to their mailing list and love that on a regular basis they send out an email with regards to improving your riding.  If you want to ride horses for a living, why not make use of these free resources to develop yourself now?
