How would you Benefit from Equine Business Workshops?

Oh to be in the United Kingdom when these workshops are being run!  CAFRE have just sent out an email indicating that they will be putting on a series of workshops – equine business workshops – in the near future.  And the best bit?  They’re free!

Whenever you’re able to, make use of free educational sessions that relate to horses, business or even better – horse business!  You’re bound to pick up something you can use to better yourself or your business.

According to the email, they are providing:

The series includes three equine business workshops:

  1. Unlocking your business potential – 11th October 2016.
  2. Marketing your “Unique Selling Point” – 1st November 2016.
  3. Keeping on the right side of the law – 10th January 2017.

Each session will take place from 7.30pm until 9.30pm at Greenmount Campus, Antrim. Registration for each event closes 7 days prior to the event. There is no fee for this course.

Interested and able to attend?  Then you can register online www.cafre.ac.uk/short-courses/equine-business-groups/

Even if you’re not yet in business, but you plan to set up your own equine business, then I am sure these sessions will be valuable to you!  Plus you can network and check out potential complimenting businesses – win/win!

“He’s of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger…. he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts.” ― William Shakespeare

Golden Ghost by Terri Farley

September 19, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

In Golden Ghost, Sam and Jen partner up to do a history project together.  They have no idea what awaits them in the ghost town of Nugget, where their project is set. When they discover a beautiful palomino mare, they are more than a little surprised.

Further to this, Sam is amazed that her friend Jen is convinced she knows the mare. She claims she is a mare that her father purchased for his breeding operation that went missing two years ago.

Sam is keen to uncover the mystery of the town Nugget. Why did it close down? What caused the deaths of the animal bones that she and Jen have found within the town? Who has been looking after the mare that has been missing for so long?

As Sam tries to piece things together, she is distraught to find that the Phantom’s new lead mare has been found dead. What’s worse, she could have died from something that could affect the rest of the herd.

Jen is struggling with her parents fighting over money. Her dad is keen to move into town while Jen and her mother want to stay on the farm. Jen is convinced capturing the palomino mare will solve all their problems. Sam is keen to help her, but she questions just how far Jen will go to secure the mare. How far is too far?

As Sam finds herself working on the history project alone, she is not impressed. When Jen isn’t at school the day the project is due, Sam comes to a sickening conclusion. There is only one place her friend could be.

The town of Nugget is unsafe and her best friend might just be there all alone, trying to catch a flighty mare. Can Sam get there in time to help Jen? And can she talk her out of pinning all her hopes on a horse?  Golden Ghost is another great read by Terri Farley.

Horse Stories that Really Happened by Diana Kimpton

September 17, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

Horse Stories that Really Happened is a great mix of six different stories about horses. There interesting fact is, all of the stories truly happened and the author has taken a bit of license and built in around the facts. It makes for a truly interesting read.  There are some beautiful illustrations by Eric Robson, too.

Readers will be delighted to learn about the first famous horse that was tamed by a young boy, later to be known as Alexander the Great. His horse Bucephalus had an interesting problem that made him difficult to ride. At a young age Alexander worked out what it was and worked with it.

The second tale shows a large animal rescue if ever there was one! Learn about Savanna, a poor mare who gets stuck in a river and the rescue team who helped her.

Learn about the plight of the dancing horses of Vienna around the Second World War and the dance that saved their lives. There are also tales of two horses who saved many in a shipwreck, Foinavon’s win in the Grand National and a foal who struggled to survive.

At the end of each story there are interesting facts about horses. They relate to the topic of the story that was read and help to further enlighten readers about horses. Horse Stories that Really Happened is an enlightening read that is sure to entertain. Add to the fact that they’re based on true stories and they will draw the reader in. Each tale is a quick and easy read, making the book one you will devour in no time.

International Centre for Equine Excellence

September 16, 2016 by Christine Meunier 2 Comments

A previous colleague of mine is now involved in an exciting initiative called the International Centre for Equine Excellence.  According to their website:

ICEE is a professional company whose mission is to provide the horse community in Korea and South East Asia with high level consultation services, educational training workshops, accredited training and international qualifications in all things equine.

Horses – particularly in the racing industry – are available to people worldwide.  If you learn skills in one country and are able to gain a qualification, then this can set you up for international travel and work.

Being able to visit other countries and use horse related skills can put you in a position to gain more skills, contacts and even better rates of pay and horse related positions.  It’s great to see this initiative that has been set up for horse enthusiasts in Korea and South East Asia.  I’m sure the International Centre for Equine Excellence will go a long way to help people local to Korea and South East Asia gain skills, knowledge and qualifications that will put them in good stead all around the world.

  • Equine sports massage therapy
  • Equine photonic therapy
  • Equine musculoskeletal therapy
  • Certificate II in racing

There are also workshops that cover a myriad of topics.  These include working safely with horses, stable duties, coaching, health and welfare, nutrition and managing a horse business.  Be sure to check out the ICEE website for further details and contact information.

Outback Equines Australia

September 14, 2016 by Christine Meunier Leave a Comment

I can’t remember how I came across this horse related website, but recently I was made aware of Outback Equines Australia.  According to their site, the focus of Outback Equines is on horse training and education within Australia.  In fact, it says on their website that they focus on:

  • Horsemanship
  • Trick Horse Training
  • Liberty Horse Training
  • Clicker Training
  • Horse Archery
  • Garrocha
  • Working Equitation
  • Dressage
  • Jumping
  • Young Horse Starting
  • Float Loading
  • Difficult Horses

This is quite a list!  I love the idea of a place that is able to help people learn horse archery.  Looking at the list of things they focus on, I was also interested in finding out about garrocha – I had not heard of this before!

A look online led me to realise it is yet another thing you can make use of, whilst on a horse.  If you look outside of the typical things people do on horseback – dressage, show jumping and cross country, you’ll find there are a myriad of other disciplines or events!

Outback Equines Australia Teaches many things with Horses
Outback Equines Australia Teaches many things with Horses

Outback Equines Australia provide a place where you can learn about these many different things.  On top of this, you can receive guidance on your riding and horse training.

Perhaps you have a passion for a not so well known discipline on horseback – such as archery. Setting up a property that teaches others how to carry out this discipline can be a unique way to do what you love whilst bringing in an income.

Can you imagine riding a horse at a canter, a bow in your hand and shooting a target?  I sure can’t!  But how incredible it would be to learn on horses that are trained to do so.  That is something I would love to do.

“It’s hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.” – Adlai E. Stevenson II
